Why I love the delightful songs of a bird in spring?

Bird – Scribble Picnic

It’s Scribble Picnic time again. This week prompt is BIRD. With spring finally arriving here in the Highlands it’s an appropriate time to thing of our feathered friends.

I have painted birds before so at the end of this post I will give a gallery of some of my earlier paintings I have found.

My first thought when hearing the word bird had to be a hymn we sang when I joined Explorers and C.G.I.T. (Canadian Girls in Training) in my youth. I also became a leader of Explorers in my mid twenties. The hymn is This is My Father’s World. I love this song and can sing almost all the words thanks to learning it in my youth.

Here are the words:

  1. This is my Father’s world,
    And to my list’ning ears
All nature sings, and round me rings
    The music of the spheres.
    This is my Father’s world:
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas—
    His hand the wonders wrought.
  2. This is my Father’s world:
    The birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white,
    Declare their Maker’s praise.
    This is my Father’s world:
    He shines in all that’s fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass,
    He speaks to me everywhere.
  3. This is my Father’s world:
    Oh, let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong,
    God is the ruler yet.
    This is my Father’s world,
    The battle is not done:
Jesus who died shall be satisfied,
And earth and Heav’n be one.

What memories that song brings to mind. Friendships. Gatherings. Skits. Stories. Campfires.

The line that I recalled was: “The birds their carols raise.”

That’s what I have been hearing this spring. I missed the bird songs from Arizona and was thankful when the little ones started to sing up here.

Seeing my first robin! Hurrah spring is coming. (tweet this)

These are Eastern meadowlarks. At least my rendition of those birds.

This is the underpainting.

And this week I found one of our garden stones really needed refurbishing. It had lost all the colour. I received it as a gift over 13 years ago when we moved into our newly built home. So this year it got a face lift – brightly coloured and ready to go in the garden.

Of course I am never content with the colours given to me by my hubby – had to mix them and get various shades of green and blues and browns.

Here is the Gallery I promised of former bird pictures.

  1. Nice work on the Meadowlarks, Janis…as well as on all your past bird paintings. I listened to the music clip and, while I’m not familiar with the words, I’m sure I’ve heard the music/melody somewhere before…perhaps in a movie. The garden stone turned out great!

    Have a lovely weekend ~ 🙂

  2. Your garden stone turned out wonderful. I am sure it is a lovely presence in your garden. It is a joy to see each of your bird pieces.

  3. Wonderful birds, Janet. I like your new painting and your past ones. Very light and whimsy painting. 🙂 Wishing you a wonderful day and a great weekend. 🙂

  4. “This Is My Father’s World” is a hymn I’ve known from church as far back as I can remember. Always a favorite, and this rendition is especially nice. The western meadowlark is our state bird. I’m always amazed by its clear, sharp song, which one can hear even while driving down the road with closed windows! Your refurbished stone, and all the other birds, are so pretty!

  5. You see, I learned something new- I didn’t know about C.G.I.T. before! Sounds like it was a good group for young women. Does it still exist?

Loving this theme as I knew it would inspire people as such and yours is no exception from the choral meadowlarks to that lovely Cardinal, in particular from your book. Great job painting up that stone and mixing the colours (acrylics perhaps?).

Thank you so much for playing along and sharing your bird stories along the way. Speaking of which, I miss the lovely songbirds in Norfolk when we were there. here, they are actually not so great. Each morning we are woken by nasty cawing crows. not the most pleasant sounds, plus we have trains going through town all night too and early in the morning. Lol. You have to keep your windows shut as such around here!

  6. I don’t know that song but I think anything that carries good memories is something to keep in your memory. good bird paintings.

    have a lovely day.

  7. I’m enjoying everything here in your post today Janis – even watching that video of the young musicians and sweet vocalist made the morning special – that is a beautiful song.
Your depiction of the pair of Eastern meadowlarks is so lovely – their voices are definitely God-given too – how birdsong enhances every day.

  8. What delightful thoughts and paintings Jan. Oh how I love bird songs too! It always causes me to reflect on the majesty and wonder of God’s creation. How kind of Him to supply us with such pleasures. Yes! This is my Father’s World.

I love to connect with you.
