Do You Study the Word or Obey it?

Do You Study the Word or Obey it?

Oswald-October-10

Quotes today are taken from Oswald Chambers – My Utmost for His HighestOctober 10.

Someone told me that because she had a degree and had studied theology, she should be taken as an authority on the Word of God.

Is that true?

I certainly look to our spiritual leaders for their words of wisdom. But is it true that someone who studies the Word as a vocation – that he is the wisest in God’s Word?

Oswald Chambers says that to know God’s truth we have to be born again.

By being born again we know the Truth and we obey it. But he also says:

Turn away from one second out of obedience and darkness and death are at work.

One reads tomes on the work of the Holy Spirit, when one five minutes of drastic obedience would make things as clear as a sunbeam.

Oh – it is not study that brings us into a relationship but obedience to the Word.

Are you obeying the Holy Spirit? What has He put on your heart that you may not have followed? (tweet this)

God will never reveal more truth about Himself until you have obeyed what you know already.

Prayer is from Matthew 11:25 in The Message:

Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. You’ve concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people. Yes, Father, that’s the way you like to work. I pray this prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

  1. In the context of which Oswald Chambers writes, it is obedience, rather than study for the sake of studying, that grabs the heart of God. But the one who who studies to show himself approved unto God will exhibit oedience for the realtionship with God is already eatablished, and that’s the one I would defer to. Good post, Jan.

    1. Yes as we study and ask Jesus to reveal to us His Word we become more aware of ourselves and God’s plan through us. We also realize that obedience is key in all that we do. – in prayer, in listening and following orders.
