Bible Painting – Have you tried it?

Word of God Speak – Bible Painting – Have you tried it?

Bible painting or journalling – what is it?

Bible painting

I posted this a year ago. I have continued to work on my Bible painting/journalling. Check out my Bible Journalling Page for more scriptures and pictures. I now have a link in my menu for Bible Journalling. Check it out. Join us on Facebook Word of God Speak.

I use watercolour pencils and felt pens and Micron pens.

Here is the post:

Bible painting is something new to me.

I would like to show you this week some of the watercolour paintings I have done in my Bible. I find, being a visual person, Bible painting helps solidify the scriptures in my mind.

It’s time for a review. I have studied, painted and memorized a number of scriptures since we started Word of God Speak. Each week I would use the SIMPLE method of Bible study to hear what God was telling me.

Here is a quick review with the scripture, my Bible journalling page, and my thoughts for each scripture. I am only doing a few of them this week. Next time I will show you new ones. Review is important. It’s time to go back and see what I have learned.

If you haven’t been following you can click on the link to see my thoughts of each scripture.

My Bible Painting

2 Corinthians 9:8  Have you found one word for 2016?

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9-8 Bible Painting

What I learned from 2 Corinthians 9:8:

In order for God to be known I must break free of my wall of insecurity – the introvert me. I must allow Him to let me burst forth – ABOUND- to show His Light to the world.

John 1:14   What does it mean God came down?

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1-14 Bible Painting

What I learned from John 1:14:

I know God is leading me somewhere. Therefore, I will continue to watch where He leads. We are called to look after those who cannot look after themselves.

John 3:5    How to accept God’s Grace

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.

John 3-5 - Bible Painting

What I learned from John 3:5:

I thought, “What does it take for the Spirit to move in the hearts of men? in my family? in my friends? I remember before I took that leap of faith, being prideful, and stubborn. So it takes the power of the Holy Spirit to break through our tough skin.

    1. Thank you,
I would love you to join us. It isn’t as hard as it looks. I find it establishes a scripture in my mind like never before. It’s great for children as well.
      Blessings,
      Janis

  1. I love this idea and have seen it–Patsy Paterno does it all the time (can’t remember her blog site). I’m too chicken because I’m not an artist and I’m afraid I’ll ruin my bible! How do you keep it from bleeding through the flimsy pages? I loved your paintings.

    1. Hi Mary,
Yes I have seen Patsy’s work – lovely. I did do some painting early last year. I found the pencil crayon works well and add the water after is easy and doesn’t bleed even on the thinest pages. Buy a used Bible at a thrift store. Pick a simple clip art. Even a heart will do.
      I hope you try it.
      Blessings,
      Janis

  2. Those are beautiful, Janis. 🙂 I don’t believe we’ve met before. I followed your post on FB. Nice to meet you. 🙂 Drawing is not my gift at all. I admire it in others, and wish it came naturally to me. Thanks for sharing the linkup. I look forward to getting to know you better. ((blessings))

    1. Thank you,
I don’t think you need to know how to draw as you can trace too. I hope to make tutorials some day. But there are lots on the Internet. So glad you dropped by and hope you come again. Today I have another 3 pictures posted.
And you are welcome to join our Facebook Group too.
      Blessings,
      Janis

  3. Lovely painting, Janis. I know that doodling is a popular way to enhance our Bible study times, but did not know about “painting” in a Bible. Do you have a special Bible with thicker pages for this? I know that there are Bibles that are made for doodling now, so I wondered if there was one designed for painting. Thanks for giving us creative ways to worship and remember God’s word, my friend!

    1. Beth,
Sorry to be late responding. I have tried all Bible and I find the little bit of water I use does not hurt the pages. I actually think some of my Bibles from the thrift store are thicker than my new “journaling Bible” that I purchased. But I like the wide margins as it gives me room to write.

I would love you to try it.
      Blessings,
      Janis

  4. Beautiful! What an awesome way to worship, reflect, and meditate on Scripture too. I might have to try this out. I can see my daughters enjoying integrating this into their study as they get older too!

    1. Oh, and I also wanted to let you know that a few weeks ago, I did a roundup of bloggers sharing their Bible study wisdom. Your post and pictures are so creative, that I had to add them in. This is the first time that I’ve gone back and added more to an old post. Yet, I loved the creativity so much, I felt that it had to be included : ) Thanks again for sharing this. http://www.coffeeshopconversations.com/bible-study-wisdom/

  5. Janis-I love your watercolor in the bible…would love to do this…but I need a bible with more white space…one of those journaling bibles. I am a visual persona and I think I’d benefit from being able to do this. Thanks for reminding me about your linkup and also for the free e-book!

  6. I didn’t paint in my journaling Bible, but I “doodled” and journaled through the whole Bible last year. It was life changing!

  7. I love how you illustrated your thoughts as you pondered the scriptures! I don’t have a journaling Bible, but it looks like watercolor could be used and not cover any words. Thanks for sharing! Blessings to you!

  8. Janis, this is absolutely beautiful! I found your sight last night as I looked through another blog. God is so faithful to give us exactly what we need! I recently set goals with my 8 year old, who is an aspiring artist. One of the things she wanted to do this year was to “paint bible pictures”. I, not being an artist, felt a little stuck in how to make this happen for her. THANK YOU, THANK YOU for this post! This is such an amazing God idea. I can’t wait to share it with her! Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Alisa,
It is wonderful to meet you and I love how God guided you here. I have been working on my next children’s book but also a colouring book/Bible study for adults. Now I am wondering where God is leading me again. To a colouring book, Bible study for kids? Am I to encourage kids to draw in their Bibles as well as express themselves on paper.
      Please keep in touch,
      Blessings,
      Janis

    1. Michele,
I needed to do this. If I get too much on my plate and in my mind I will get overwhelmed. I just heard – STOP and review. Whew
      Blessings,
      Janis

I love to connect with you.
