Families

An old couple sat by the fireside. He looked over at her, had a romantic thought, and said, “After fifty years, I’ve found you tried and true.” The wife’s hearing wasn’t very good, so she said, “What?” He repeated, “After fifty years, I’ve found you tried and true.” “After fifty years, I’m tired of you too,” she replied. Scripture reading is from Psalm 128:1-6 The Message

1-2 All you who fear God, how blessed you are! how happily you walk on his smooth straight road!
You worked hard and deserve all you’ve got coming.
Enjoy the blessing! Revel in the goodness!

3-4 Your wife will bear children as a vine bears grapes,
your household lush as a vineyard,
The children around your table
as fresh and promising as young olive shoots.
Stand in awe of God’s Yes.
Oh, how he blesses the one who fears God!

5-6 Enjoy the good life in Jerusalem
every day of your life.
And enjoy your grandchildren.
Peace to Israel!

We spent the weekend with our family. This meant we had 11 adults, three young grandchildren and four dogs at the cottage. It made me think of families, and how important they are to us. What a wonderful God we have that He planned to place us in groupings where we can learn to live, love and respect one another. Of course, it means, too, that we have to learn to have forgiveness and understanding as well.

Another family that God gave us, in Christ, is our spiritual families. How wonderful to be able to move to a new town and find sisters and brothers in Christ. Even in travelling we have met people who know Christ and have blessed us in our temporary association.

The church celebrated Pentecost a few Sundays ago. Here is the first day of “Christ’s church”, the day when the Holy Spirit came upon those who believed. As we continue to pray and give thanks and praise, let us remember we are a family in Christ. We were put together by God to work for Him. Let us press on and work towards that goal.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for making family groupings. We ask you to protect and bless our earthly families. We also thank you for our spiritual families. Help us to work together with the Holy Spirit to guide us. Help us to be open, honest and caring with one another. In Jesus’ name, we pray. AMEN.
