GOD IS LOVE

God is Love

by T. L. Wiens

A few days ago, I read a blog that dealt with 1 John 4:8, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

And even though I’m not sure I totally agree with the blog author’s path, our conclusions are the same; the definition of love in many Christian circles is not God-like.

Jesus is God. Do all of His actions reflect the human definition of love? If you look at some of His words, love isn’t the first thing you see. He refers to the Pharisees as hypocrites and vipers. In Matthew 12:49, Jesus’ statement “Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?” when his mother and brother come looking for Him doesn’t seem kind. Matthew 23 is filled with condemnation of the Pharisees.

“I want to walk with Jesus. I want to be like Him.” How many times have you heard people say that? How many churches would accept you if you spoke like Jesus spoke to the Pharisees? And yet, every one of these words of our Saviour is spoken out of love because He is love.

If Christians took a closer look at Jesus and the Bible, they would see our human definition of love is often not in line with the character of God. His is a righteous, holy love that defies our understanding. But His love works.

So the next time you pray for those around you, pray for them with true love as defined by God. Pray for their eternal destiny instead of their immediate comfort. Pray for God’s will truly to be done.
