Why is Study Important?

I hear and read about many different “methods” to pray. Some are good while others leave me wondering where in the Bible the author or speaker discovered that idea. Some are taken from pagan religions and shouldn’t be a part of our Christian prayer life.

How do we know how to pray?

Two verses come to mind.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV).

“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment” (Mark 12:30, KJV).

When I think of my own faith walk, I see how my prayer life has changed. As a child, I asked for more frivolous things. As I grew in my knowledge of God, my prayers became less self oriented. Now, my heart hurts for God’s people and my prayers echo that love. At the same time, I’ve come to understand my lacking in a much deeper way and many of my prayers are for true understanding of God’s Word and His will.

Prayer isn’t complicated.

When you love God, you’ll want to know Him. You’ll study His word. As you study, you’ll get to know Him better and your communication with Him will flow naturally.
