WINGS AND WEIGHTS

Wings and Weights

by Stephanie Nickel

We love to spend time with certain people because they lift our spirits just by being in the same room. They give us wings.

And then there are others. Sometimes through no fault of their own, they weigh us down, piling heavy loads on our shoulders.

However, what would happen if we asked the Lord to teach us the benefit of being weighed down?

How should we pray when we’re soaring high? How should we pray when we are feeling earthbound?

Some people
Give us

Wings.

Others give us

Weights.

I prefer wings

However
I risk flying
High above
People and their problems
If I only use
My wings.

If I don’t allow the weight
To preoccupy
But simply keep me
On Terra Firma
I can look around
See my fellow weight-bearers
Empathize

And perhaps
Help them become
Power lifters.

Hurray
For wings
And weights.

“…clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other…And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity” (Colossians 3:12-14 NIV)
