Why and How Can I Use a Prayer List?
When I was teaching I met this wonderful, strong Christian lady who would tell me “I added you and your husband to my prayer list” or “Mrs._____, I prayed for you this morning at prayer meeting.”
I must admit, when she first told me about being on her prayer list, I thought it was “legalistic”. I had grown up visiting churches (even though I attended a different church) where they read the same prayers over and over again based on the event that was taking place and I thought that this was just a rote prayer, which meant nothing. So when this sweet old woman told me about her prayer list I found myself thinking it was something similar.
Oh how wrong I was!
After I left teaching and came home to raise my children and take care of my family, I realized that there were sooooooo many things I wanted to pray about and so many people that I wanted to pray for. But, I would forget so much things and so many people. Sure I would remember to pray when things were not so good, like a sick person, someone who lost a loved one….you know the ones that just jump right up in your face.
But the others…the thank yous and the praying for people who have stopped coming to church or people who seem to be having a bit of difficulty in their jobs or families, or the friend who everything seems to be going great for but they asked you to prayer for them for some unknown reason because they are not able to say at this particular moment…those I would forget.
Then it hit me- I need a way to remember all of these people and things to pray about.
I need a prayer list!
Not because I am legalistic, but because I forget.
And so from today I have committed to starting my prayer list.

I like list – helps me to remember things! Blessings!
You’re are right about this. Reminds me of the saying: “A short pen is better than a long memory”.

Susan, I am starting to see the importance of lists and planners now! So much time is saved and you don’t forget as much. Right now I am currently working on a homemaking binder and a homeschooling planner.
I’m a list girl – groceries, to-do, what I wear to book signings, prayer….Couldn’t live without a list. Thanks for reminding, Tanya. Merry Christmas.
