Sunday Stillness – What can we learn from the Rock Badger?
Four things on earth are small
yet they are extremely wise (Proverbs 30:24, NIV).
Last week I looked at the industrious ant. We seem to be winning the battle of the ants this week. Whew. I hope so.
Today is the rock badger.
hyraxes are creatures of little power,
yet they make their home in the crags (Proverbs 30:26, NIV);
The rock badgers are a feeble folk,
Yet they make their homes in the crags (Proverbs 30:26, NKJ);
The conies are but a feeble folk, Yet make they their houses in the rocks (Proverbs 30:26, ASV);
The next animal in the list In Proverbs 30 is the coney, hydrax or rock badger. This was a new one to me. I needed to go back to Google. They were also called mountain mice and bear mice.
I found out that conies live along the foot of the mountains west of the Dead Sea. They are small like mice. They live in the clifts of rocks which gives great security. They also are swift so they are hard to catch.They also set up sentries to warn the others of intruders. This wise conduct brings them safety and security.
As I thought and prayed over this passage I see that we are like the conies but we hide under the protection of Jesus – our Rock – we hide under His wings. We are a feeble people but we have a strong God. His angels protect us too. We need to be wise and put up personal sentries to guard our boundaries (our heart, our health, our minds, and our spirit).
