Sunday Stillness – Another look at REST

REST2for-web

As I have been working at finding time to spend with God another acronym came to me for REST. Are we sitting and thanking Him for all the little things in our lives? Do we look around and see the things we can be thankful for? Are we aware of our surroundings?

So I started another grateful journal. A friend of mine opened my eyes again to see that each moment of the day we can speak a prayer of thanks to Him Who watches over us.

Here are a few that came to me that day:

  • gentle breezes of summer for those hot summer days
  • fluffy white clouds that float in a blue sky (I even saw a little dog in one of the clouds)
  • all shades of green
  • my sweet dog sleeping on a pillow
  • a family who cares
  • a faithful husband who believes in the power of God
  • planting my own garden
  • a solid house (we are built on rock)

Check out all the Joy Dare posts about thankfulness.

Sunday Stillness – What is REST?

REST-for-web

This has been on my mind for some time. What is REST? Last Wednesday I found out. I think it means to spend some quality time with God.

R – Restore

E – Everything

S – Sit

T – Tight

I had trouble doing this the past few weeks. On Wednesday,  I still had trouble but had the time to persevere – until I heard that quiet voice with some answers. I loved Oswald Chambers from August 5.

A Christian is one who trusts the wits and the wisdom of God, and not his own wits (Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest, August 5)

If I am going to trust in His wits, then I have to be close to Him, listen to Him and follow His directions.

Sunday Stillness – Choose Jesus

Sunday Stillness – Choose Jesus

Choose-Jesus

VBS 2015 – Choose Jesus

It has been a very busy week. My family were visiting and I led a Vacation Bible Camp at our church for the mornings. Needless to say I didn’t have time to reply to the wonderful comments from last Sunday. I did read them and thank you so much. This week it should – (I say should) – be easier to get stuff done.

At our Bible Camp the kids learned 5 important choices

Choose to Believe:
The Blind Man – John 9
Memory Verse – God sent His Son to be the Saviour of the world. (1 John 4:14)
Choose to Act:
The Ten Sick Men – Luke 17:11-19
Memory Verse – Let us love with actions (1john 3:18)
Choose to Forgive:
The Paralyzed Man – Mark 2:1-12
Memory Verse – God will forgive our sins. (1 John 1:9)
Choose to Obey:
The Rich Young Ruler – Luke 18:18-27
Memory Verse – I will obey Your commands. (Psalm 119:
Choose Jesus:
The Disciples – John 20:19-29
Memory Verse – Choose today who you will love and serve. (Joshua 24:15)

They did very well with the memory work. Our presentation on Friday for the parents was fantastic. The kids were terrific.

I bought my VBS from Gospel Light called SonWorld. It was the last one Amazon had and was out-of-date on their website. But it gave me the needed inspiration for stories, great pictures and flannel pictures too. I had to make up my own crafts (except one) as I didn’t find the crafts given to be useful for remembering the lessons.

These are lessons we all need to remember.

I caught a cold on the Wednesday but once again God carried me through. Amazing what strength we can get from Him.

Here is one of the songs they loved and sang at the end of our presentation. Let’s remember these words.

I’m Keeping my eyes on Jesus.

Sunday Stillness – What can we learn from the Rock Badger?

Sunday Stillness – What can we learn from the Rock Badger?

Four things on earth are small
yet they are extremely wise (Proverbs 30:24, NIV).

Last week I looked at the industrious ant. We seem to be winning the battle of the ants this week. Whew. I hope so.

Today is the rock badger.

What-can-we-learn-from-the-rock-badger

hyraxes are creatures of little power,
    yet they make their home in the crags (Proverbs 30:26, NIV);

The rock badgers are a feeble folk,
Yet they make their homes in the crags (Proverbs 30:26, NKJ);

The conies are but a feeble folk, Yet make they their houses in the rocks (Proverbs 30:26, ASV);

The next animal in the list In Proverbs 30 is the coney, hydrax or rock badger. This was a new one to me. I needed to go back to Google. They were also called mountain mice and bear mice.

I found out that conies live along the foot of the mountains west of the Dead Sea. They are small like mice. They live in the clifts of rocks which gives great security. They also are swift so they are hard to catch. They also set up sentries to warn the others of intruders. This wise conduct brings them safety and security.

As I thought and prayed over this passage I see that we are like the conies but we hide under the protection of Jesus – our Rock – we hide under His wings. We are a feeble people but we have a strong God. His angels protect us too. We need to be wise and put up personal sentries to guard our boundaries (our heart, our health, our minds, and our spirit).

Sunday Stillness – How Do I Let God Be My Portion?

Sunday Stillness – How Do I Let God Be My Portion?

How do I let God be my portion

I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.” (Lam. 3:24, NIV)

As I prepare for my trip to Poland I have been reading some thought provoking articles sent to me by International Messengers.

One dealt with being poor in spirit – a hard lesson for me.

Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs in the Kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:3, NIV).

I saw this little robin in my backyard the other day and it reminded me of the love and caring that God has for everyone – little robins too. The little robin is poor in spirit as it depends on God for its very being.

God looks after the little robin.

I too must learn to depend on God – that is being “poor in spirit”; getting rid of the “me” tendencies – you know the “I must, I need to, I want to”.

How can I let God be my portion?

I need to let go – of everything;

of knowing that things don’t have to be perfect; that I can try to do my best but then leave it at that; to focus more on my communication with the Father and less on what I want. As I lean on Him, He gives me great wisdom and strength than I could not have achieved by myself.

The article reminded me of the story of the prodigal son – if he had been poor in spirit, he would have welcomed his brother back rather than feeling left out. That is the sin of pride.

I have to learn that my way is not necessarily the best. I need to back off and see where God leads instead.

The song that shows that to me is Blessed be the Name of the LORD. The name of the LORD is a strong tower, the righteous run into it, and they are saved.

Saved means that God is my portion, my tent and my rock. He is my all in all.

Here is the video:

Prayer:

Oh Lord, I know You are my portion. I will wait on You. I won’t go ahead of you. I will watch and go where You show me. I will lift my prayers to you, not fearing anything because You have it all under control. I am saved and in Your arms. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

So grateful to Jesus for revealing Himself to me, for my confession, for my accepting Him as Lord and Saviour of my life.

if you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9, NIV UK).

Sunday Stillness – Acts 10:34-35

Sunday Stillness – Acts 10:34-35

Acts-10-3435-free-net-photo-'children'

Thanks to FreeDigitalPhotos.Net by Salvatore Vuono

These past few months I have been amazed with the community that has been built here and on Twitter. The people I have talked to from all around the world – God has brought us together.

Christians from every race, every nation.

While I am on my blogging holiday (see my last post on Under the Cover of Prayer), I plan to continue with Sunday Stillness Links – maybe not a full post. But I will put up the linky. I plan to continue to use Twitter to reach more Christians and spread His love everywhere.

I am continuing to do the Lenten challenge from Margaret Feinberg, to read through the New Testament. Today’s Scripture comes from Acts 10:34-35:

Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favouritism  but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.

I am loving the challenge. I also love how God will wake me up in the middle of the night to read if He feels I won’t make time to do it.

This will be the last day that I allow comments as I am taking them off while I am on blogging holiday. Otherwise I will be tempted to check in.

But anytime please email me at Janis , because I will check and respond to emails.

And this song came to mind from Robin Mark. I heard the Sound of Voices.

I heard the sound of voices, from every tribe and nation
As they were walking, singing songs of deliverance
For going on before them, a little Lamb was leading
And I could hear Him singing songs of deliverance.

God does not show favouritism. A good lesson for all of us. (tweet this)

Sunday Stillness – Seek His Kingdom

Sunday Stillness – Seek His Kingdom

Seek-His-Kingdom

Seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well (Luke12:31, NIV).

I have joined Margaret Feinberg and 10 000 others in reading through the New Testament for Lent. So far I am keeping up.

Of course I can’t just read the words. I have to study them; question them; and write down my thoughts.

While reading Luke I came across this passage. I remembered a similar passage from Matthew in the King James Version.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33, KJV).

What it meant to me is for me to be on the lookout for God in my day. When I received this picture above in the mail I immediately saw the cross. I had a similar experience when I was taking pictures early in the morning last year. Take a look at the picture below. It was an aha moment as I searched for reflections in pictures.
