Sunday Stillness – Seek His Kingdom

Sunday Stillness – Seek His Kingdom

Seek-His-Kingdom

Seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well (Luke12:31, NIV).

I have joined Margaret Feinberg and 10 000 others in reading through the New Testament for Lent. So far I am keeping up.

Of course I can’t just read the words. I have to study them; question them; and write down my thoughts.

While reading Luke I came across this passage. I remembered a similar passage from Matthew in the King James Version.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33, KJV).

What it meant to me is for me to be on the lookout for God in my day. When I received this picture above in the mail I immediately saw the cross. I had a similar experience when I was taking pictures early in the morning last year. Take a look at the picture below. It was an aha moment as I searched for reflections in pictures.

Is God Your First Thought?

Is God Your First Thought?

by Janis Cox

Is-God-Your-First-Thought-

I read an article in Charisma magazine by Rich Rogers entitled The American Idols Must Die. He compares the similarity of the recent age in the United States to the time of Moses (found in 1 Samuel).

So many things vie for your attention in this complex world of instant communication (Jesus Calling, Sept 3).

Where do you spend your time?

Is God Your First Thought?

  • when things go well
  • when you have trouble
  • before you attempt something

Communicate with Me continually and I will put My thoughts in your mind (Jesus Calling, Sept 3).

I know I need to remember this. Do you?

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well (Matthew 6:33, NIV).

This makes it pretty clear.

Put God and our communication with Him
– PRAYER – first. (tweet this)

Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10, NIV).

The last words of the article:

My Bible says that if God’s people humble themselves and PRAY and turn from their wicked ways, then He will hear from Heaven and heal their land.

And a last word from Oswald Chambers on the subject.

“The cares of this world,” says Jesus, “[will] choke God’s word”(Oswald Chambers, August 31).

Are you putting God first?

SEEK

See if you can see the bunny rabbit.

Welcome to Sunday Stillness.  Know that Sunday is for seeking God. Take time today to spend time alone with Him. Lay all your concerns. Praise Him for Who He is. Thank Him for all He has done and is doing in your life.

Seek – I looked out my window the other day and there was our jack rabbit, busy eating his morning’s breakfast. I took the picture but he is very hard to see beside the rock.

You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water. (Psalm 63:1, NIV).

Jesus tells us to seek God with all our hearts. He can bring all the peace, the joy and the strength needed for this world.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well (Matthew 6:33, NIV).

Jesus is the way – So Pray

Jesus is the Way – So Pray

“Jesus does not give recipes that show the way to God as other teachers of religion do. He Himself is the Way.”

Karl Barth, Swiss Protestant theologian of the 20th C.

In my last post I talked about being overwhelmed. Certainly it is easy to get so involved doing good and serving that you can feel that way. I have done this to myself countless times. I take on one more thing. It seems right when I am asked. But maybe I am doing it because I feel good that someone has asked me. Someone says to me that I would be good for that job – and my ego says, “thank you very much” – I will do it. Soon I realize that I should have taken the request to God first. Seeking God’s answer is always better – He may say yes, or He may caution me that this is not good for me or for Him at this time, or He may say – what were you thinking? No.

Jesus took time to seek God.

“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (Luke 5:16 NIV).

I am learning to do this; to look carefully at what I am asked to do. Is my heart in it? Will I feel resentful if I say yes? Is it pride that makes me want to say yes? These are questions to put to God and remember to listen for an answer.

Some things I tackle I know God is behind them as I am enthused, energized and joyful. Other things I know too that I shouldn’t have said yes. I struggle to finish those tasks, procrastinate and have no joy.

As Karl Barth says Jesus is the Way. So following the way I have found is the better way. How about you?
