Sunday Stillness – What are you wearing?

Sunday Stillness – What are you wearing?

This week, the phrase “clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ” keeps going through my mind.

What-are-you-wearing--Romans-13-14

Romans 13:14 says:

Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

How can we clothe ourselves in Jesus? I have 4 thoughts.

  1. Read your Bible every day.
  2. Pray often.
  3. Join with others to learn more about following Jesus.
  4. Be grateful all the time.

Also watch out for those deceivers.

One of my favourite songs is Put on a Garment of Praise, sung by Robin Mark.

Put on the garments of praise, for the spirit of heaviness;
Let the oil of gladness flow down from your throne!
Put on the garments of praise, for the spirit of heaviness;
Your joy is my strength alone, my strength alone!

Make these broken weary bones rise to dance again,
Wet this dry and thirsty land with a river!
Lord our eyes are fixed on you and we are waiting,
For your garland of grace as we praise your name!

(chorus)

Hallelujah, sing hallelujah!
We give all honor and praise to your name!
Hallelujah, sing hallelujah!
We trade our sorrows for garments of praise!

You can listen to Robin singing Garments of Praise.

Psalm 46:10

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

Sunday Stillness – Learn a SIMPLE way to study the Bible

Learn a SIMPLE way to study the Bible

A-SIMPLE-way-to-study-the-Bible

I realize that it isn’t easy to study the Bible without a formal group study. Trying to study it by yourself can be frustrating at times. I have tried many different methods.

Here are three:

Precept Ministries (Using lines, squares, triangles – and good thinking skills you can work your way through a passage) – Inductive Bible Study

The 5 Ps of Bible Study – by Priscilla Shirer

An African Bible Study – this is usually done in a group but could be used by yourself.

This week God gave me a new way to study the Bible on my own. I call it SIMPLE, because it really is SIMPLE.

A SIMPLE Bible Study – click to download a PDF version of the SIMPLE Bible Study by Janis Cox

Before I start any passage I will pray for God’s Spirit to guide my study. I always have a journal in which to record my questions, answers and inspirational thoughts.

S – Say the passage aloud. I know that sounds silly but hearing it aloud helps you think clearly about what you are reading.

I – Identify the characters, the setting, the circumstances surrounding this passage. This could take some hunting for some passages. (Use a study Bible or google the passage to find a commentary.)

M- Make a list of the thoughts, questions and ideas that come to you while you read this passage. The questions you have may not be answered today but they will be answered. Believe it.

P – Pray again for God’s guidance. Let the Spirit lead you. Stop for a minute and listen to Him. Ask God to show you how you can apply what you have been studying to your life.

L- Life – How can I apply what I have been studying to my life? This is the time to journal your ideas and thoughts.

E – Exit the passage with a prayer for God to help you remember what you have learned and help you use this knowledge in your daily life.

Praying and studying the Bible go together.

Next week I will take this method, choose a passage and follow it. If you wish to try it I will be using John 3:1-8. See what you come up with. Make a post about it and link to #SundayStillness.

Prayer:

Lord help us all to study Your Word more and more. Help us use the best method for each of us to learn more about You. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

“I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you.  (John 15:11-12, The Message). (my emphasis on JOY)

What is a wholly mature joy? I have been thinking about that. This summer has been a joyful one – family, more family and more family. I have loved it. Even though others have complained about a cool summer – really it was lovely. Love filled the summer.

But in the past, I didn’t always feel “joyful”. I found myself tired, overwhelmed, disorganized and confused. Why?

I think Oswald says it best:

The first thing that will hinder this joy is the captious irritation of thinking out circumstances (Oswald Chambers August 31).

I used to let little things bug me – laundry, dishes, meals, cleaning. Instead of just doing them joyfully. I used to let the fact I was tired bug me.

Instead, I needed to be rightly related to God,
and then my joy will come without any effort on my part.

When I figured this out – I could be joyful during anything.

So I had a wonderful summer during tiredness, sickness, and sleepless nights.

So if you are feeling overwhelmed, tired, or confused:

STOP – pray.

Get right with our Lord, thank Him for all His blessings.

When we focus on God the rest falls into place.

Prayer:

Lord, sometimes we let the trials of the day drag us down. Instead we need to look to You for our strength and joy. Help us to get closer and closer connected to the mainspring of our lives. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Sunday Stillness – What is a River of Prayer?

Sunday Stillness – What is a River of Prayer?

What-is-prayer-2

Photo taken from The St. Lawrence River.

For the past few days my hubby and I were on a short vacation with our boat. Hubby loves boating – I like it. We went to Gananoque, Ontario with our boat. Gananoque is on the St. Lawrence River. We took two trips on the river. One up stream, one down.

I found it wonderful to read Oswald Chambers this morning as he talked about the river.

The river of the Spirit of God overcomes all obstacles.

A river touches places of which its source knows nothing.

Isn’t that just like God? He showed me the spiritual connection of what I had experienced.

God wants us to let the Holy Spirit flow through us – like a river.

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of Living water will flow from within him (John 7:38, NIV).

Rivers of Living water will brim and spill out of the depths of anyone who believes in me this way (John 7:38, The Message).

This is how I felt about the St. Lawrence River:

The St. Lawrence:
steady, unchanging
flowing, constant,
consistent, moving,
powerful, relentless.

Let our prayers be like a river  – steady and in constant motion..

I see them flowing, building, joining together, moving, going around obstacles or God removing obstacles, endless, and powerful.

Prayer:

May we lift our voices as one to you, Lord. May they flow through us as we allow the Holy Spirit to take control. Remind us to pray at all times. Help us to become bold for You. Help us to reach out to others. Help us to see the News as a call to prayer. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

Each time you pray this week, picture the Holy Spirit River – all the pray-ers joining together as sweet incense to Jesus.

Sunday Stillness – What is Obedience to God?

Sunday Stillness – What is Obedience to God?

what-is-obedience-to-God

What He says we will do, where He sends we will go

This will be my last Sunday in Poland. It will be the end of camp and I think the last day of camp. I head back home on Tuesday. Will have lots to tell you when I return.

Jesus said:

Blessed … are those who hear the word of God and obey it (Luke 11:28, NIV).

Oswald Chambers says:

The level of my growth in grace is the way in which I look upon obedience (July 19).

So I guess the obedience I have to Jesus gets stronger as my relationship with Jesus increases.

Obedience is only possible between equals; it is the relationship between father and son, not between master and servant (July 19, Oswald Chambers).

As I come closer to Jesus I can hear His voice better; sense Holy Spirit promptings; and know that I want to obey.

The stronger the relationship, the stronger the trust between the two parties.

Because Christ lives in me, He has that right to show me the truth and the way to go.

I love Robin Mark’s song, I’ve Been Crucified With Christ. Listen and enjoy.

And of course a favourite oldie. Trust and Obey.

Here are the words;

Breathe them in:

Trust and Obey

When we walk with the Lord
in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
Let us do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Trust and obey,
for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
but to trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear,
not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss,
not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

Trust and obey,
for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
but to trust and obey

Then in fellowship sweet
we will sit at His feet.
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way.
What He says we will do,
where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.

Trust and obey,
for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
but to trust and obey.

Let’s grow stronger together.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Jesus, and Your Holy Spirit. Thanks for teaching me through Your Word, and prayer. Hold my hand as we walk this walk together. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

This is the beginning of week four of my blogging holiday. Praying for God to show me the way He wants me to go.

So grateful to Jesus for revealing Himself to me, for my confession, for my accepting Him as Lord and Saviour of my life.

if you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9, NIV UK).

Sunday Stillness – Acts 10:34-35

Thanks to FreeDigitalPhotos.Net by Salvatore Vuono

These past few months I have been amazed with the community that has been built here and on Twitter. The people I have talked to from all around the world – God has brought us together.

Christians from every race, every nation.

While I am on my blogging holiday (see my last post on Under the Cover of Prayer), I plan to continue with Sunday Stillness Links – maybe not a full post. But I will put up the linky. I plan to continue to use Twitter to reach more Christians and spread His love everywhere.

I am continuing to do the Lenten challenge from Margaret Feinberg, to read through the New Testament. Today’s Scripture comes from Acts 10:34-35:

Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favouritism  but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.

I am loving the challenge. I also love how God will wake me up in the middle of the night to read if He feels I won’t make time to do it.

This will be the last day that I allow comments as I am taking them off while I am on blogging holiday. Otherwise I will be tempted to check in.

But anytime please email me at Janis , because I will check and respond to emails.

And this song came to mind from Robin Mark. I heard the Sound of Voices.

I heard the sound of voices, from every tribe and nation
As they were walking, singing songs of deliverance
For going on before them, a little Lamb was leading
And I could hear Him singing songs of deliverance.
