How Can We Stop Coasting?
by Brenda Wood
Why is it we can’t drop ten pounds as fast as we used to? As we get older we burn calories less efficiently and our physical energy output decreases. We can rev it up again but that takes some work on our part.
People who study such things say that our resting metabolism declines about 20% over our adult lifetime. As a result we lose muscle and gain fat and that fat will increase by a bunch more if we don’t exercise more and eat less.
Do those physical rules also apply to the spiritual?
Do we need to exercise more faith muscles, so that the creeping fat of sin doesn’t overcome us?
It’s easy to coast along letting others do all our praying and studying for us, but someday that will catch us unaware.
You see, God wants a personal relationship with us, not with our stand-in or secretary.
Let’s rev up our prayer life before it’s too late.
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NIV).
Prayer:
Lord, forgive us for coasting on the prayer life of others. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
