Manage your money – 3 Tips

Manage your money – 3 Tips

Although the Bible doesn’t tell us that money is evil – it is actually amoral as it has no emotions, no thoughts or ideas. But the Bible does tell us that the love of money is the root of ALL kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). That must make us take pause and see why God is so adamant against the “love of money”. You need to manage your money.

That’s why it is important to manage your money.

When we took Financial Peace with Dave Ramsey we learned some very important tips in getting control of your money. This is an act of will. And as Dave says: “It is as you will it.” This is just the beginning of getting a handle on money but I thought I would share the first 3 tips with you today. If you are near a church that is running a Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University –  GO.

Three Tips to manage your money

1.The Emergency Fund:

This is the most important thing for every family to start to build – forgetting everything else until you have this in hand. Start putting money aside to build up your first one thousand dollars. Put it where you cannot reach it easily but that you can access it if you have an emergency. Dave gives many ways to build up this fund. You can sell “stuff”. Yes all that stuff you have stored in your homes, your closets or your storage units. Get the money. You can get a short-term second job – whatever you can do. You must change your mental thinking. It is a paradigm shift. Pray for God to reveal the way to do this.

2.Tackle your debt:

We were told that back in the 1900s credit was not issued and people had to pay with the money they had. (Novel idea, eh?) Both Sears and Ford did not offer credit at first. By the 1950s credit cards started to enter the marketplace. Banks became smarter and smarter (we became not so smart). Today they offer credit to younger and younger people – to get them into their branding and to start a trend of buying before you have the money.

(Dave’s talk – paraphrased)

Banks are much better at selling than we (as consumers) are at buying. (Dave’s talk – paraphrased)

The borrower is a SLAVE to the lender (Proverbs 22:7).

The first step, after building an emergency fund, is to tackle the debt. Dave Ramsey suggests a method he calls the Snowball Method. After writing down your debts in a list, you tackle the smallest one first. Work on that hard (an extra job, helping out, selling, or just watching what you spend until you get this done). Once you have paid that off – then you take the payment you have been making on it and add it to the second debt. Work. Work Work. Get this finished.

Dave says we need to have a “plasectomy” – get rid of the plastic. Cut it up. Quit borrowing more money. Stop. Don’t buy anything  but essentials until you get out of debt.

When he mentioned selling stuff to get out of debt – Dave said, “sell so much that your kids think they might be next!”  @authorjaniscox

3.Get a 3-6 month emergency fund:

This is important – in case you lose your job, or get sick. Once again work on it – work on it – work on it. It becomes your entire focus.

It is an attitude change. There is hope. We must think differently. Life is too short to be normal.

Does Money Control You?

This is a very important question – Does money control you? Or do you control money? Where are you in the “love of money” question?

money control

Do you come to the end of the month and wonder where the money went? Are you in debt? Do you feel stressed about money?

God doesn’t say money is evil. Actually it is amoral. It has no feelings and isn’t able to “do” anything by itself. God does say,

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs (1 Timothy 6:10, NIV).

Notice it is the “love of money” that can bring evil.

My hubby and I have taken the Dave Ramsey course a few times and watched the videos. If you are near a church sponsoring this course I would suggest you look into it. We can’t get it in Canada, so we are preparing our own course based on what we learned. We are calling it a Money Management Course with the slogan, Do you control your money or does money control you?

For those who live locally in the Haliburton Highlands we are offering it on Thursday nights at the Lighthouse Pentecostal church from 7-9pm, starting September 8. For the others I would ask you to pray for us for these 10 weeks, that God may send those who would benefit from this learning, that our words would speak His thoughts, and we would all benefit from the discussions. If you want to find out more and live in the Highlands or surrounding area, email me at Janis.

Time for today’s linkup. This is Word of God Speak. Please join us in posting or reading wonderful words of what God is doing in our lives. Let’s build each other up.

Restore your life – Are deceivers blinding You to God’s purpose for your life?

What’s keeping you from following your purpose?

Are you looking to restore your life and purpose? What is distracting you?

I am continuing to study Titus using the SIMPLE Method of Bible Study and Ed Hird’s book Restoring Health. Today I am working through Titus 1:11.

Of course, I start with a prayer for God to open the Scripture to me.

S – Say the passage aloud.

They must be silenced because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach – and that for the sake of dishonest gain (Titus 1:11, NIVUK).

I – Identify the characters, the setting, and the circumstances surrounding this passage.

Since we have been following Titus verse by verse, if you are new here, you will need to go back to the beginning to better understand the characters, setting and circumstances.

Continuing from the last verse from last week:

They = mere talkers and deceivers

These deceivers are teaching things they ought not to teach.

M- Make a list of the thoughts, questions and ideas.

So how do we silence them? Everyone is involved – whole households. I wonder who the “they” were in Paul’s day. Were they people who knew God but started their own ideas? Or were they people who wanted to have people follow them – for the sake of dishonest gain. So they pretended to be “like” the apostles but without the sound doctrine of Jesus.

Were they Jewish rabbis who were following so closely to the rules they forgot to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with their God? (Micah 6:8) Remember Jesus got very angry when they turned the temple into a marketplace – Church is supposed to be a House of God.

I look at all that can deceive us. There is plenty. We have so much vying for our attention – TV, videos, movies, social media, sellers, Facebook ads, – all taking us on rabbit trails (some good some bad).

This all reminded me of Satan’s Letter.

What takes us away from the TRUTH – that we follow Jesus? Are we holding firmly to the trustworthy message as we have learned it from Jesus? (Titus 1:9)

P – Pray again for God’s guidance.

Make sure when you do this study that you take time for this step. Otherwise we are thinking our own thoughts and can be led astray.

L- Life – How can I apply what I have been studying to my life?

Deceivers come looking like goodness but they are covered up and we can’t see the truth behind them. Remember Satan is the devil in disguise. I chose the icon because Satan can  come looking like a Valentine.

the two greatest dangers to … the Kingdom of God, come from two directions, money and power… Money and power crucified Christ (E. Stanley Jones).

This reminded me again of the course by Dave Ramsey, Financial Peace. We need to get a handle on money so it doesn’t get a handle on us.

I wanted to look at all the areas of my life – all of them. Where could I be deceived?

Here is what I discovered.

POWER

That is self. I struggle with self sometimes, many times. I have to keep asking myself, am I going this for God or me?

SOCIAL MEDIA

I must watch how much time I spend on this. Which one should I focus on?

PROCRASTINATION

Of course I do what I like to do first, or what is most pressing. But maybe I need to stop and ask God where I need to focus my attention for that time?

ACTIVITIES/STUFF

God is really speaking to me about this. Is there something else I need to lay down?

About 10 years ago I heard my LIFE VERSE, “feed my lambs”. I have been trying to do this but I do go on rabbit trails. That is why this year my goal is to be Intentional to Restore my focus on God.

So in December I decided to stop writing for Inscribe, stop Under the Cover of Prayer, stop Family and Faith Matters.

I picked up being a contributor to Hope Stream Radio each Tuesday. I hope you listen to this wonderful online radio station.

And I keep hearing, do Sunday Stillness.

Of course then there are projects I need to still work on this. Which ones?

E – Exit the passage with a prayer for God to help you.

Lord, all of the things I am involved in are good things but they may not be where you want me to spend my time. Help me to wrestle through this. I am asking for clarification of the truth – the real road. Please point me in the right direction. Help me to learn the best way to “feed your lambs”. Help me clearly see and hear the deceivers. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.
