Time, How God Can Expand it

How Can God Expand Time

Someone asked me if I could do something. I had to say, “I’m sorry at the moment I have no time”. I even said that I wished God would give me another 24 hours in a day. But you know what, He answered me and showed me how to not be concerned with time.

Time - How God Can Expand it

This is the grandfather clock my hubby built.

We are continuing with week three of a Lenten study using The SIMPLE Method of Bible Study.

S – Say the passage out loud. Check other versions.

Today’s study is based on Mark 11:27-33

They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him.  “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”

Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.  John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’  But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)

So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

I – Interpret the passage – check footnotes, references, and commentaries. Find out all you can about the passage. When? Where? Why?

Jesus had just cleansed and cursed the temple. The religious leaders wanted to destroy Him. This is the first of 5 controversies in the temple. Tension is building on the way to the cross.

The temple courts were courts that surrounded the main temple buildings. There was the court of women, court of men (Israelite) and court of Gentiles.

What authority? Priest wanted to know why Jesus could perform an official act when He had no status.

“Heaven” was a common word for “God”.

M – Make list of thoughts, questions and ideas.

Those who called themselves “religious” should have understood Who Jesus was. But they didn’t. They were blinded by obstacles. I was too – See my faith testimony.

Submission to Authority:

The priests had become powerful. They had money and position. They saw Jesus as a threat to that. They reject His authority (28) – See Mark 1:22, Mark 1:27, Mark 2-10-11.

Who is our authority? Is it science, the world, the media, other people, ourselves?

Check out the Evidence:

I read A Case for Christ by Lee Stobel and books by CS Lewis, Max Lucado and of course The Bible to help me answer the question Who is this Jesus?

It’s a great question that Jesus posed. The evidence is seen in Malachi 3:1, Isaiah 40:3 and by John the Baptist.

But even with all this evidence the priests could not get over themselves and the possibility of losing control.

Fear God rather than man:

Fear of man is a common problem (See Proverbs 29:25). The leading Jewish authorities were afraid of the people. So they waffled and said, “We don’t know”. They wanted to stay safe and comfortable and keep the status quo.

P – Pray – after all your thoughts are expended – take time to talk to God and then to LISTEN to Him.

L – Life Application – Write down what you heard God speak (It might be entirely different than your thoughts – that’s okay)

I think it is amazing how God works. This is the passage suggested in the study I am following. And last Sunday it is the text that the sermon was based on. Our pastor, Rick Thiemke, if Via Church in Mesa, Arizona, explained the passage very well and many of my thoughts came from that sermon. I love this quote.

Science is a great description of what God already knows. (click to tweet)

Remember the burning question I had this week: How can I get more time?

I am learning to never say never. God is the God of the impossible. Being God-led means submitting to His authority. I was reminded of two old acronyms and one new one.

And my new one – TIME

T – Thankful: Be thankful for each moment of the day.

I – Interest: Show interest and understanding and watchfulness for events around you.

M – More:  God gives us more than we need. He expands time, energy and vision.

E  – Expansion: Our world expands when God is in control. I pray to expand my territory for God.

How do you see TIME? God’s version is different than ours.

Submit to His authority and see TIME expand. (click to Tweet)

The scripture to study for this week will be Colossians 1:17 because I think it encapsulates all the ideas of TIME.

He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

E – Exit the study with a written prayer of confirmation, forgiveness, praise or acceptance.

Oh Father, once again You amaze me of how You put things together – this day, this week, this year. The sermon, this Lenten study, Your words through prayer. You tie is all together. You hold everything together. You even expand time. Thank You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

5 Ways to Become a Watchman for God

5 Ways to Become a Watchman for God

By concentrating on learning more about God I can become His watchman.

Lessons on Communicating with God

Colossians 4:2 says:

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

I like that idea — to devote myself to prayer — but how can I accomplish it? While studying Mark Batterson’s Draw the Circle — The 40 Day Prayer Challenge I realized that prayer is beyond any expectations that I ever thought possible.

I would like to become a watchman for God.

And to do that I must stay alert to what’s happening around me. That way I can help others, I can thank God and be grateful for His help.

Mark says: Prayer is the difference between seeing with our physical eyes and seeing with our spiritual eyes.

Here are 5 ways I have found to bridge the gap between earth and the unseen world.

1. Pray specifically for God to open your eyes

Only God can open our spiritual eyes.

I know when I do this that I will be seeing things I would normally pass over. I will see divine appointments. I will notice where God is leading me.

The Aramaic word for prayer means “set a trap for”.

Instead of thinking of prayer as a list of wants we need to see prayer as a way to ask God to speak to us. (tweet this)

Waiting for Him to give us wisdom. Waiting for Him to answer our questions.

watchman

From my Bible journalling on Draw the Circle by Mark Batterson

2. Prayer is a two-way conversation.

We need to remember it isn’t just us speaking. God can reply. God speaks through our dreams, our desires, our promptings, impressions and ideas. The Holy Spirit helps us to do this. We could say the Holy Spirit is our Sixth Sense. He helps us see into the spiritual realm and to hear across the divide between earth and heaven. That’s the way to become a watchman.

3. Be prepared for work and practice.

Set a time each day to practice the art of prayer. Set your alarm if you need to get up earlier. Be specific in what you ask and then wait. This prayer journey must become routine. We need to do it each day.

4. Read God’s Word daily.

Start using God’s Word as an offence. Pray the Scriptures.

Mark says: Quit talking to God about your problem and start talking to your problem about God.

watchman

Bible Journalling from Days 12 and 14 from Mark Batterson’s Draw The Circle

5. Read devotionals, Bible studies and thoughtful theologians.

These resources will help enrich your experience. Make sure that the references you are using are biblical. I like books that are filled with scriptures.

Here are a few books that I enjoy:

My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers

Draw the Circle The 40 Day Prayer Challenge by Mark Batterson

The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer

The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormy Omartian

Knowing God by J.I. Packer

You are welcome to have a free PDF about a SIMPLE Method of studying the scriptures that I developed. (Join my newsletter at Growing Through God’s Word Newsletter.)

This prayer journey can be exciting. But we need to begin. So if you haven’t asked God to open your spiritual eyes, do so today and begin a wonderful, exciting journey into communicating with God.

May I pray for you and me?

Thank You Father for this wonderful way to communicate with you. Help us to learn more and more as we ask for Your help. Jesus taught us how to pray by saying Our Father Who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory. For ever and ever. Amen.

Until next time, I would love to hear about your prayer journey.

Remember to take time each day to pray and read God’s Word.

Bible painting or journalling – what is it?

Bible painting

I posted this a year ago. I have continued to work on my Bible painting/journalling. Check out my Bible Journalling Page for more scriptures and pictures. I now have a link in my menu for Bible Journalling. Check it out. Join us on Facebook Word of God Speak.

I use watercolour pencils and felt pens and Micron pens.

Here is the post:

Bible painting is something new to me.

I would like to show you this week some of the watercolour paintings I have done in my Bible. I find, being a visual person, Bible painting helps solidify the scriptures in my mind.

It’s time for a review. I have studied, painted and memorized a number of scriptures since we started Word of God Speak. Each week I would use the SIMPLE method of Bible study to hear what God was telling me.

Here is a quick review with the scripture, my Bible journalling page, and my thoughts for each scripture. I am only doing a few of them this week. Next time I will show you new ones. Review is important. It’s time to go back and see what I have learned.

If you haven’t been following you can click on the link to see my thoughts of each scripture.

My Bible Painting

2 Corinthians 9:8  Have you found one word for 2016?

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9-8 Bible Painting

What I learned from 2 Corinthians 9:8:

In order for God to be known I must break free of my wall of insecurity – the introvert me. I must allow Him to let me burst forth – ABOUND- to show His Light to the world.

John 1:14   What does it mean God came down?

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1-14 Bible Painting

What I learned from John 1:14:

I know God is leading me somewhere. Therefore, I will continue to watch where He leads. We are called to look after those who cannot look after themselves.

John 3:5    How to accept God’s Grace

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.

John 3-5 - Bible Painting

What I learned from John 3:5:

I thought, “What does it take for the Spirit to move in the hearts of men? in my family? in my friends? I remember before I took that leap of faith, being prideful, and stubborn. So it takes the power of the Holy Spirit to break through our tough skin.

Crucified With Christ

Crucified With Christ – What does that mean? Word of God Speak Linkup

For the next weeks I will be joining Lisa Morris as she delves into studying 17 New Testament Books in 17 Weeks.  That is the link to her Facebook Group if you wish to join us. This week we are studying Galatians and particularly looking at Galatians 2:20 – I’ve Been Crucified with Christ. I love studying one verse in depth and Lisa has chosen one scripture to memorize. But I am also reading through Galatians with some of her questions in mind.

Crucified with Christ

S – Say the passage out loud: Check other versions.

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me (Galatians 2:20, NIV).

Indeed, I have been crucified with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is not “mine,” but it is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I am not going to go back on that (Galatians 2:20, The Message).

I – Interpretation – Check footnotes, references and commentaries. Find out all you can about the passage. When? Where? Why?

There were a few scriptures mentioned in my study Bible to check out.

Galatians 5:24 – crucified sinful nature
Galatians 6:14 –  only boast in the cross of Jesus
Romans 6:8-10 –  we live with Christ
Romans 7:6 – By dying… we are released from the Law, so we serve in a new way of the spirit, not in the old way of written code.

We died to sin – freed from its powers.

Galatians 1:4 – Christ gave Himself for our sins to rescue us.
1 Timothy 2:6 –  Jesus gave Himself as a ransom for many.
Titus 2:14 –  Jesus gave Himself to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His own.

M- Make a list of thoughts, questions and ideas.

This passage is so powerful. It says the whole purpose of our Christian faith.

Being crucified, being cleansed, renewed, changed – a new person, the Spirit of Christ lives in me.

We are not only cleansed but filled with His power, His strength.
Jesus lives in me. (Tweet this)

Grasp hold of that. In my bodily weakness Jesus is strong.

Many times Jesus has pulled me through. Every summer during Vacation Bible School that I run I have been sick, but Jesus has given me strength to continue and not miss a day.

When I first heard the words, “crucified with Christ” I hated that word. I heard I’ve been crucified with Christ and I cringed. Why?

Was I afraid of giving up some of me? Did I know that if I said those words it would mean total acceptance and giving over control to Jesus?

Releasing control – could I do that? Could I say that I have been crucified with Christ and He lives in me?

Yes – I wanted to be thoroughly dead to sin. That doesn’t mean I won’t sin but it means sin has no power over me.

Through the death and resurrection of Christ the power of sin over me is DEAD. I am cleansed in Him.

The old “me” is gone. The “I” no longer lives. Instead Christ lives in me. I live by faith in Jesus. (tweet this)

And that makes all the difference.

P- Pray for God’s Guidance This is a silent time of prayer, listening to God Speak. When you have finished writing all your thoughts, questions and ideas then take time for prayer.

L- Life Application – Write down what you heard God speak (no matter how different from your own thoughts previously).

I felt a complete surrender as I prayed this morning. It was like being accepted all over again. It was giving up anything hindering my relationship with Jesus. I wrote this poem to remember this time.

I’ve Been Crucified with Christ

Surrounded by His Spirit
Enveloped by His Love
He dwells deep inside me
Guides me
Inspires me
Heals me

I live by faith in the Son of God who loves me and gave His life for me.

Here is Robin Mark singing, I Have Been Crucified With Christ.

E- Exit with a prayer of confirmation, forgiveness, praise or acceptance.

Father I am so glad you rescued me and brought me into Your family. I thank You that through the death of Christ I too have been crucified and brought into the Kingdom. May You continue to guide me and give me inspiration to learn more and more about You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Freedom and Change for 2016?

Word of God Speak – Linky – Freedom and Change for 2016?

by Janis Cox

This week I want to look at freedom and change for 2016.

Freedom and Change for 2016

As we head into a new year – 2016 – I am filled with expectancy. After much praying I finally found my word for 2016.  – ABOUND

This year these words have been flowing through my mind:

Freedom and Change

Expectant, rebirth, birth, growth, newness, refreshing.

And that’s probably what led me to eventually find my word ABOUND.

This week I was led to Hebrews 1:10-12 so this is our scripture to memorize for this week.

It’s a longer passage to memorize but I really like it. I want to change and I will; God will not change – ever. Hallelujah.

S – Say the passage out loud:

In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
 You will roll them up like a robe;
like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
and your years will never end. (Hebrews 1:10-12, NIV).

I – Interpretation – Find out all you can about the passage. When? Where? Why?

Hebrews 1:3

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory, and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word.

Read through the following: Ps 8:6; Zechariah 12:1; Isaiah 34:4; 51:6; Hebrews 12:27; Hebrews 13:8; Psalm 102:25-27;

As I read through these verses these thoughts stood out:

God is the Ruler of All Things
He lays the foundation of the earth; formed the Spirit of man
He will make judgment on all nations
Even though the heavens will vanish He will save us
God can shake things up. But we can remain unshaken.

I love Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever.

Notice how Psalm 102:25-27 is very similar to our passage.

M- Make a list of thoughts, questions and ideas.

Tozer talked about the unchangeableness of God; but he also talks about God giving us freedom and change.

He can change us too. Working in our sphere of influence God can make changes in us and others.

I thought about why God can’t change. Here’s what I think.

God can’t get better – He is perfect.
God can’t get worse – He cannot sin.
God is unique – so He can’t change.

He is immutable, which means that He has never changed and can never change in any smallest measure (Tozer, The Pursuit of God). (tweet this)

A couple more quotes from Tozer made me really think:

Much of our difficulty as seeking Christians stems from our unwillingness to take God as He is and adjust our lives accordingly.

Are we “unwilling to take God as He is and adjust our lives accordingly”? AW Tozer (click to tweet)

A satisfactory spiritual life will begin with a complete change between God and the sinner … a conscious and experienced change affecting the sinner’s whole nature.

One of the first Bible verses I learned:

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17, NIV)

My mind focuses on permanence – of God but the changing of us. This year 2016, is it one of change, rebirth, experience for me?

I see a butterfly and freedom and change.

Freedom and Change for 2016

Watercolour butterfly by Janis Cox

P- Pray for God’s Guidance This is a silent time of prayer, listening to God Speak.

L- Life – How can I apply what I have heard from God to my life?

This time was different. I don’t usually fall asleep during my prayer time. But this time I did. I felt like the disciples when they fell asleep when Jesus asked them to watch and pray with Him.

But through my dozing I heard – newness of life; change; rebirth. I know that my Word is exactly what God told me.

I know I must change for my relationship with God to grow. (click to tweet)

E- Exit with a prayer of confirmation, forgiveness, praise or acceptance.

O Lord, mold me, melt me, make me into the one You want me to be. Help me to listen to You, study Your Word and grow closer to You. Help me to know how to feed Your lambs. Increase my wisdom. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

This hymn kept going through my head:

Spirit of the living God,
Fall afresh on me.
Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.
Spirit of the living God,
Fall afresh on me.

Hebrews 1:10-13

Word of God Speak – Linky – Have you found One Word for 2016?

Word of God Speak – Linky – Have you found One Word for 2016?

Finally God did it – He led me to my One Word for 2016. The word is ABOUND.

Abound

Using watercolour pencils on 70 pound paper.

And I couldn’t have come up with that one. As I was meditating one morning – that’s what I heard – abound.

So I looked it up:

  • to be present in large numbers or in great quantity
  • to be copiously supplied
  • be in a state of movement or action
  • to be filled

Abound Acronym Janis Cox

Act boldly, openly under new direction. – Abound is my Word for 2016
2 Corinthians 9:8. (tweet this)

My scripture for the year is: (This will be our memory verse for this week.) 2 Corinthians 9:8

And one additional scripture for me to keep in mind is  Philippians 1:9,

I am so excited to see where He will lead me this year.

Here are my thoughts on studying this scripture using the SIMPLE Bible Study Method.

S – Say the passage out loud:

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8, NIV).

I – Interpretation – Find out all you can about the passage. When? Where? Why?

Here is the Greek word “abound” from this passage for all those Greek scholars: περισσεῦσαι, to make a thing to abound unto one, to confer a thing abundantly upon one (Strongs 4052)

This verse is found under the heading “Sowing generously” in my Bible. Paul is encouraging the Corinthians to be generous.

Two Scriptures that tie in with this are Ephesians 3:20 and Philippians 4:19.

I noticed in both scriptures “all” is repeated. And that God is more than able to do everything. And that His power is at work in us.

M- Make a list of thoughts, questions and ideas.

Through ALL things I need to remember that God supplies ALL my needs. In order to ABOUND in all I do, I need to surrender it all to God.

Surrender = give to God in prayer

Prayer and connection need to be my focus this year.

Even if I don’t think I can do something, God can and will if I stick with Him. (tweet this)

What does it mean “all grace abound to me”? Does that mean I don’t have to be perfect? Does it mean I can relax? Let it go. Find God’s power – not mine and go where He tells me.

P- Pray for God’s Guidance This is a silent time of prayer, listening to God Speak.

I had a lovely meditation when I finally stopped talking to God and LISTENED.

L- Life – How can I apply what I have heard from God to my life?

In order for God to be known I must break free through my wall of insecurity – the introvert in me. I must allow Him to let me BURST FORTH – to show His light to the world.

I have felt “birthing pains” in the latter part of 2015. I have seen visions of butterflies working to come out of their protective coverings. Sometimes I feel like I am knocking, hammering and waiting to crack through, while at the same time I’m held back by my insecurities.

Lord, when You gave me the word ABOUND, I felt elated, set free, unentangled, ready to do Your will.

But I also must plan:

Plan - ICON - Janis Cox

I’m feeling energized, invigorated and excited to see what God will do. (tweet this)

E- Exit with a prayer of confirmation, forgiveness, praise or acceptance.

Lord, I am so grateful for Your presence in my life. I feel such an abiding peace and joy. Now I feel Your abundance and your consistency in all I do. Thank You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Word of God Speak – Can I Catch The Holy Spirit and Run for the Goal?

Word of God Speak – Can I Catch The Holy Spirit and Run for the Goal?

Last week we looked at 2 Corinthians 4:17-18:

For, our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

God is so good. I chose this passage without realizing that it is the first Sunday in Advent. HOPE. How awesome. Hope is what we are talking about. The glory of being with God – now and for all eternity.

Can-I-catch-the-Holy-Spirit-and-Run-for-the-Goal-

This week we will look at Romans 8:18 and 1 Peter 1:6-9, using the SIMPLE Method of Bible Study. We will be memorizing 1 Peter:8-9.

S – Say the Scripture out loud.

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

And in The Message 18-21

That’s why I don’t think there’s any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times. The created world itself can hardly wait for what’s coming next. Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment into the glorious times ahead. Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens.

I – Investigate and interpret where and what it is

Like last week we are looking at momentary troubles – the things of this world – age, sickness, pain, anger, hate, frustration, death. And we are comparing it to what Christ is promising – an eternity with Him, in new bodies – freed of this world.

Don’t you love The Message’s  version –  The joyful anticipation deepens.

M- Make a list of your thoughts, questions and ideas

I thought about this through the week and it we seem to live in two separate “universes”. One temporary and one eternal, one earthly and one godly, one with suffering and one with glory.

We have the opportunity to bridge that gap now  – here on earth. We can find those moments filled with peace, longing, inspiration, comfort and joy.

How can we find that bridge? that portal?

I recall many sermons stating I should have a firm foundation. I will admit during that time, I had no clue to what that meant or why it was important.

I’ve come to understand that FAITH and TRUST are to be our firm foundation.

Here are a few building blocks for faith and trust:

  • a knowing in our hearts Who God is
  • an understanding of the power of the Cross and Christ’s resurrection
  • a giving over of control to God, Who is more than able to do anything
  • a knowledge of the Quiet and how necessary it is to water and nourish our faith – a constant, consistent watering by being in the Word and being STILL
  • a repertoire of Scripture so we can recall important words for ourselves and for others.

Looking at 1 Peter 1:8-9 from the HCSB:

You love Him, though you have not seen Him. And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy,  because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

P – Prayer Time – Don’t forget to listen to God – don’t talk. Be Still

L – Life Application – what did you hear?

I had a lovely meditation.

I heard the words – faith and trust.

But then I heard the word “catch”.

Catch? What does that mean? Catch His Fire was one of my first email addresses. To catch the Spirit of God.  And to catch or capture others from the darkness and absence of God.

Here’s what I know of having a genuine faith:

  • Be at peace with myself and others
  • Relax in all circumstances because He is able, more than able.
  • Do – Don’t be sidetracked or pulled off course. Continue to focus on Jesus and do.

Then I saw a vision of me catching a football and running for the goal.

What an awesome picture! The goal posts – a shining light. Hope radiating as I ran.

So I decided after all this that I would memorize 1 Peter 1:8-9 because that seems to be where God led me today. Find out more at our Facebook Group Page. All welcome.

E – End with a Prayer

Thank You Lord, for always inspiring me and bringing me joy. When I seek you I can cross the divide between the temporary and the eternal. Help to encourage others to do this. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Word of God Speak – A Link Party

16-Scriptures-about-The-Word-of-God

This week I thought we should continue to look more closely at the word of God, which we studied for the past week. How did you do with your memory work?

B——, r—– are those who —- the —- of — and —- it. Luke ??:??

Check the bottom of the post to see if you got it right. I have started a Facebook Group called Word of God Speak Community. I would love you to join me there. We will find different ways to study the Scripture for the week. If you have any other ideas please share them. Here is our Word of God Speak Community Facebook Group. You may add other people you think may be interested.

Today I would like to continue on with another passage about The Word of God using the SIMPLE Method of Bible Study.

S – Say the passage out loud:

The Word of God is living and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates to even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12, NIV).

This is a little more of a challenge for memorizing but I know you can do it. Stick with me at our Word of God Speak Community Facebook Page.

I –  Interpret

What did I find out through looking up cross-references; googling; and from the words themselves?

There seems to be some argument over who is the author of Hebrews. Because it doesn’t start with a salutation the claim of Paul being the author is suspect.

Whoever wrote Hebrews very strongly told the story of the resurrection and our gift from God to live eternally with Him.

I looked up so many “word” passages. I thought I would share them in a drawing. I found 16 that I made into a Wheel. You can download this picture as a PDF.

M – Make a list of thoughts and questions.

I do know how important the Word of God is.

When I grew up we didn’t read the Bible as a family except for a few tries over the years. But my grandfather always read from a devotional and the Bible after supper. When we visited them – not very often – I would hear the Word and sometimes be asked to read it out loud. As I think back it might have been The Upper Room that he used. I don’t recall any discussion after reading the passage and devotional (which I think is essential).

When I made my decision that Christ would be my Lord and Saviour, I was hungry to learn more. I wanted to read the Bible but found it very difficult. We had a family Bible in the King James Version. I couldn’t understand it. I became frustrated. A friend suggested I buy a New International Version. But still nothing. The same friend suggested I ask Jesus to help me understand what I read. I gave that a try and hurrah – I understood better. I still ask God to open my understanding as I read His Word.

I’m excited now, not only to read but to hear what God wants me to know TODAY. Since his Word is LIVING and ACTIVE it can change as I change and as my circumstances change.

P – Pray – Remember not to talk too much to God but instead listen to His Words.

L – Life Application: What did God tell me?

The very first words I heard from Him were:

Cut to the quick.

Now that was entirely weird. I didn’t know what it meant. I checked various biblical references for quick and quicken and quickening.

  1. I read that “cut to the quick” could mean hurt, or emotionally hurt.

But when they heard this, they were cut [a]to the quick and intended to kill them  (Acts 5:33, NASB).

2. It also meant to get to the core of the message and stay focused.

3. “Quickening” meant to give life to dead flesh. God speaks through quickening.

It is the Spirit which quickens, the flesh profits nothing: the words which I have spoken unto you are spirit and are life (John 6:63, Darby Translation).

4. The literal Greek meaning of “quicken” means “to make alive, give life or vitality” (Strongs #2227).

So what do I do with these words, “cut to the quick” that God has given me? I remember hearing sermons that I thought, “How does the pastor know that those words are exactly what has been happening in my life? that is the answer I seek?”

I think what I am learning is that the Holy Spirit makes God’s Word come alive. Any passage will help me with instruction or correction. And God will ensure that he leads me to the passage I need to study for that day. And as for myself – I am to stay focused on what He wants me to do. I also want to remember NOT to grieve the Holy Spirit. If God tells me to do something I had better do it – and do it immediately!

E – Exit with a prayer.

Lord, You can cut me to the quick – either focus me or cut off something that is not of You. I know I am to be set apart for You – to be Holy at all times. Thank You for being such a loving, caring, gracious God who knows me. You have revealed so much to me today. You talked more than I have heard in a while. As I delve deeper into Your Word help me to change and refine and become closer to whom You want me to be. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

The song Refiner’s Fire also came to me during prayer time. This reminded me of the podcast I did for this past week – To live in the Holy.

Here is Refiner’s Fire for you to enjoy sung by Brian Doerksen.

The answer is to the puzzle:

Blessed, rather are those who hear the Word of God and obey it. Luke 11:28.

Sunday Stillness – If it looks good is it good for you?

Sunday Stillness – If it looks good is it good for you?

If-it-looks-good-is-it-good-for-you

Lately I have started reading Genesis. I read and read. When I see something that catches my attention I stop, and using my SIMPLE Bible Study Method, I work through the verse.

I read Genesis 3:5-6. The serpent tells Eve.

For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

Tempting isn’t it? Would you have been tempted? I think I would have.

We read her thoughts:

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. (My emphasis)

Before the serpent said this – she didn’t see him as evil. She only saw good. All was good in Eden. All animals ate plants. And this apple was pleasing to the eye. And she saw more than she needed. She saw it as desirable for gaining wisdom. Oh my do we see things that are desirable for getting better, being better.

In my Bible “gaining wisdom” is in italics. I am not sure why but it got my attention. We think learning is a good thing. Is that true?

I read 1 John 2:16.

For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.

So the desirableness of what seems good does not come from God – but from Satan.

I think I need to think about this more.

What do I do that seems good but really isn’t of God?

More time is needed for me to figure this out. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Sunday Stillness – By wisdom a house is built

Sunday Stillness – By wisdom a house is built

For the past month I have been reading a Proverbs a day with an online Facebook group. This exercise proved to be a great discipline. Reading through each Proverb I would see where God led me. On day 24 I read this verse.

Watercolour painting by Janis Cox

Watercolour painting by Janis Cox

By wisdom a house is built,
and through understanding it is established (Proverbs 24:3, NIV)

Through skillful and godly Wisdom is a house (a life, a home, a family) built, and by understanding it is established [on a sound and good foundation] (Proverbs 24:3, Amplified Bible)

In my journal I had sketched a picture to remind me of this Proverb.

proverbs-24;3

As we can see from the Amplified Bible, house can mean your life, your family, your home. So taking a look at my life I know that I need to continue to grow by reading the Bible, following discussions and listening to God. I believe I am filling my mind with knowledge that will become beautiful treasures. I find even now I am using Bible verses to encourage others.

We started a Bible study back in Haliburton, using my SIMPLE Method of Bible study. For the past two weeks we studied a verse a week.

I shouldn’t be amazed but I am – how God can use the same verse to say different things to each of us.

We discuss the questions that come into our mind, and then we each take a time of quiet prayer to talk to God and most importantly to listen to Him. Then we come back and whoever wants to share what they heard, may.

If you are interested these are the two Scriptures we used:

Romans 8:6

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

Proverbs 28:19

Those who work their land will have abundant food,
but those who chase fantasies will have their fill of poverty.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You so much for the power of Your Word. Every time I read a verse and study it – really study it, You bring so much into my mind. You can convict, inspire, lead and guide us through Your Word. Thanks for this marvelous discipline of studying the Bible. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.
