5 Ways to Become a Watchman for God

5 Ways to Become a Watchman for God

By concentrating on learning more about God I can become His watchman.

Lessons on Communicating with God

Colossians 4:2 says:

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

I like that idea — to devote myself to prayer — but how can I accomplish it? While studying Mark Batterson’s Draw the Circle — The 40 Day Prayer Challenge I realized that prayer is beyond any expectations that I ever thought possible.

I would like to become a watchman for God.

And to do that I must stay alert to what’s happening around me. That way I can help others, I can thank God and be grateful for His help.

Mark says: Prayer is the difference between seeing with our physical eyes and seeing with our spiritual eyes.

Here are 5 ways I have found to bridge the gap between earth and the unseen world.

1. Pray specifically for God to open your eyes

Only God can open our spiritual eyes.

I know when I do this that I will be seeing things I would normally pass over. I will see divine appointments. I will notice where God is leading me.

The Aramaic word for prayer means “set a trap for”.

Instead of thinking of prayer as a list of wants we need to see prayer as a way to ask God to speak to us. (tweet this)

Waiting for Him to give us wisdom. Waiting for Him to answer our questions.

2. Prayer is a two-way conversation.

We need to remember it isn’t just us speaking. God can reply. God speaks through our dreams, our desires, our promptings, impressions and ideas. The Holy Spirit helps us to do this. We could say the Holy Spirit is our Sixth Sense. He helps us see into the spiritual realm and to hear across the divide between earth and heaven. That’s the way to become a watchman.

3. Be prepared for work and practice.

Set a time each day to practice the art of prayer. Set your alarm if you need to get up earlier. Be specific in what you ask and then wait. This prayer journey must become routine. We need to do it each day.

4. Read God’s Word daily.

Start using God’s Word as an offence. Pray the Scriptures.

Mark says: Quit talking to God about your problem and start talking to your problem about God.

5. Read devotionals, Bible studies and thoughtful theologians.

These resources will help enrich your experience. Make sure that the references you are using are biblical. I like books that are filled with scriptures.

Here are a few books that I enjoy:

My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers

Draw the Circle The 40 Day Prayer Challenge by Mark Batterson

The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer

The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormy Omartian

Knowing God by J.I. Packer

You are welcome to have a free PDF about a SIMPLE Method of studying the scriptures that I developed. (Join my newsletter at Growing Through God’s Word Newsletter.)

This prayer journey can be exciting. But we need to begin. So if you haven’t asked God to open your spiritual eyes, do so today and begin a wonderful, exciting journey into communicating with God.

May I pray for you and me?

Thank You Father for this wonderful way to communicate with you. Help us to learn more and more as we ask for Your help. Jesus taught us how to pray by saying Our Father Who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory. For ever and ever. Amen.

Until next time, I would love to hear about your prayer journey.

Remember to take time each day to pray and read God’s Word.

Bible painting or journalling – what is it?

Bible painting

I posted this a year ago. I have continued to work on my Bible painting/journalling. Check out my Bible Journalling Page for more scriptures and pictures. I now have a link in my menu for Bible Journalling. Check it out. Join us on Facebook Word of God Speak.

I use watercolour pencils and felt pens and Micron pens.

Here is the post:

Bible painting is something new to me.

I would like to show you this week some of the watercolour paintings I have done in my Bible. I find, being a visual person, Bible painting helps solidify the scriptures in my mind.

It’s time for a review. I have studied, painted and memorized a number of scriptures since we started Word of God Speak. Each week I would use the SIMPLE method of Bible study to hear what God was telling me.

Here is a quick review with the scripture, my Bible journalling page, and my thoughts for each scripture. I am only doing a few of them this week. Next time I will show you new ones. Review is important. It’s time to go back and see what I have learned.

If you haven’t been following you can click on the link to see my thoughts of each scripture.

My Bible Painting

2 Corinthians 9:8  Have you found one word for 2016?

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9-8 Bible Painting

What I learned from 2 Corinthians 9:8:

In order for God to be known I must break free of my wall of insecurity – the introvert me. I must allow Him to let me burst forth – ABOUND- to show His Light to the world.

John 1:14   What does it mean God came down?

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1-14 Bible Painting

What I learned from John 1:14:

I know God is leading me somewhere. Therefore, I will continue to watch where He leads. We are called to look after those who cannot look after themselves.

John 3:5    How to accept God’s Grace

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.

John 3-5 - Bible Painting

What I learned from John 3:5:

I thought, “What does it take for the Spirit to move in the hearts of men? in my family? in my friends? I remember before I took that leap of faith, being prideful, and stubborn. So it takes the power of the Holy Spirit to break through our tough skin.

Pictures Can you see them in Scripture?

Pictures Can you see them in Scripture? – Hope Stream Radio Podcast

I see the Bible as pictures more and more. Because I have been making colouring pages and painting in my Bible, scripture is coming alive. I’m able to memorize passages.

Pictures - in scripture

On Hope Stream Radio yesterday I talked about this. You can see the show notes below or listen to the podcast How I see Pictures in Scriptures.

Here are the show notes:

Hope Stream Radio How I See Pictures in Scripture.

The three scriptures we reviewed last week on Word of God Speak were 2 Corinthians 4:17-18; Isaiah 40:8; Hebrews 1:10-12.

All three point to eternity with God. They remind us how temporary our lives are here in this world.

Being an artist I see pictures in scriptures. (Tweet this)

Listen to this one:

2 Corinthians 4:17-18

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

I see light and momentary troubles as balloons. (click to tweet)

They will be gong – either float away, deflate or be punctured.

Pictures

As I picture what I see as troubles I put them in balloons, I can release them – and watch them go. If they are worries I can stab the balloons with a pin.

Peace comes when I can see all earthly things as temporary. (click to tweet)

To fix my eyes on the unseen – on Jesus – helps me to remain in this peace even when the seen feels powerful and unyielding. The peace of Jesus can overpower the troubles.

Isaiah 40:8 talks about how grass withers and flower fall. I can picture the seasons – the grass withering in winter, and the flowers falling. But I also know that spring comes next and with it new life. I see this and I know it. And the new life will in me and it will never end when I trust in Jesus.

Isaiah-40-8-web

Hebrews 1:10-12 talks about creation. But it says that all that all will perish but God will remain and His years will never end.

I see creation as formed by God. I see God’s work. But I know that this will change too. God will always be the same but He will wrap creation up like a robe and then bring forth a new creation, like He did with me. God will remain the same but He will change you and me.

hebrews-1-10-12

Where do you need to change? Ask the Lord to show you.

I have loved reviewing these passages and painting pictures and making colouring pages to help me memorize God’s Word. Join me on Facebook Called Word of God Speak Community.

May I pray for you and me?

Lord, we know we need to change in order to be more like You. In each of the areas we need change, please show us so we can work and pray to make ourselves have a closer connection to You. Thank You for being unchangeable. You are our Rock. We are eternally grateful. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Until next time, bask in the thought of God’s promises, and how His Word will never change and never fail us. Be in the Word.

Unseen Where are you looking?

Unseen  Where are you looking? – Word of God Speak Linkup

This has been another busy week – I have been reviewing the 6 scriptures we have had posted last week and the week before. This week we look at 3 more. Every one of them point to the unseen, to eternity.

Time - God - Unseen

2 Corinthians 4:17-18

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Time seemed very important to me for this scripture. I love the “light and momentary troubles”. Even in our most dire circumstances, in light of eternity, this would be negligible. Our troubles may seem heavy and long when we must endure them. I find it interesting that these words make us see the difference. Time here on earth is temporary. What we can’t see but hear about in scripture is for ever. Let’s focus on the unseen.

Focus on the unseen. (Tweet this)

2 corinthians 4-17-18

Isaiah 40:8

The grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God endures forever.”

Time again is the focus. The things of this world are temporary. God is forever. We look towards what is unseen instead of what we see. I love that.

Isaiah-40-8-web

Hebrews 1:10-13

In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
 They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
 You will roll them up like a robe;
like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
and your years will never end.

I did not plan it this way. But this one has to do with TIME as well. Everything we see is perishing. God remains the same. Praising God we will not perish if we give our lives to Jesus. We will have eternal life.

Again look to the unseen.
