Secret: Does God Keep Secrets From His People?

Does God Keep Secrets From His People?

I had to check through God’s Word to see what He said about the word “secret”. I know it’s not good to keep secrets if it hurts someone but it’s also not good to spread news – gossip. The only way we can figure out what God says about secrets is to go to His Word.

It’s time for Five Minute Friday – we have 5 minutes to write on a prompt. The prompt the word is “secret”. Join us and meet others who write for Him.

Surprises are lovely. Keeping things a secret helps with the surprise. We have had 3 big surprise parties.

Surprise Number 1:

I remember my husband’s 30th birthday party. He came in the back gate and found a whole bunch of people in his yard. His first thought was, “What are all these people doing here?” SURPRISE.

Surprise Number 2:

Then he surprised me on my 40th. Our kids were visiting – that was normal. We were going away to Europe the next day. Not normal. I had things still to figure out. But Hubby talked me into having the kids come to celebrate. But then there was the doorbell and people started arriving. Party time. I had fun but told him to time it better the next time – I need time to plan. But what a sweet SURPRISE and well-kept secret.

Surprise Number 3:

Our children surprised us on our 40 wedding anniversary. In the early evening my son-in-law decided to vacuum the carpets – clue. But I thought oh he is being so nice. Then the doorbell rang and I answered it. A friend was at the door. I said, “Oh what’s wrong? Can I help you?” She said, “surprise!” And that was that.

Those were all lovely surprises by keeping them secret.

But today when I heard the word “secret” I immediately started to sing “It is no secret what God can do”.

IT IS NO SECRET written by Stuart Hamblen

Sung by Anne Murray

I chose Anne’s version because I love her voice and she is Canadian.

God does keep secrets for now. But all will be revealed sometime.

Mark 4:22  “For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light.”

Matthew 10:26 “Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.”

Luke 8:17 “Nothing has been covered that will not be exposed. Whatever is secret will be made known.”

Things may be murky for now – but we will know everything some day. In the meantime I know we need to work hard to discover Who God is and how we can communicate with Him.

God also wants to reveal Himself.

This song gives me that knowledge. His promises make it clear. We can know Him.

God is shows us what He can do – if we look around. Watch, look, pray.

Be aware and you will see Him.

What Can I See With 33 Random Dots?

What Can I See With 33 Random Dots?

Once again I challenged myself with 33 dots on a page. I prayerfully put 33 random dots on a page with my eyes closed. Then I join the dots without crossing any lines. See how I found a rabbit. Hint it has something to do with Easter.

What will I be able to see this time?

It’s not easy but I ask God — what it is this week that you want to explain to me? I turned the page around and round. I finally settled with this view.

What do you see?

rabbit

33 Dots connected. What do you see?

This week I had the pleasure of a visit from my sister-in-law. We did some walking around the Riparian Water Reserve in Gilbert, Arizona. We had our little dog, Snowball, with us.

My sister-in-law loves taking pictures. So I wandered and she shot 100 pictures. She and Snowball have one thing in common and that’s rabbits. They both love rabbits. But Snowball likes to chase them and my sister-in-law wants them to stay still. I would hold our little dog back while she took some great pictures.

Isn’t he cute? Photo by my Sister-in-law.

I guess rabbits were on my mind when I looked at my 33 dots because this is what I saw.

A rabbit emerged from the 33 random dots.

33 Dot Image — Rabbit

Now I have a rabbit picture and of course, Easter is coming in a few weeks so my mind went to the Easter Bunny and Easter Eggs.

I have questioned this custom before. In fact, I wrote about Satan’s letter stating that children were taken away from the true meaning of Easter by the Easter Bunny.

But I’ve changed my mind since reading about the history of these customs.

Why It’s Hard to Agree With My Husband

How to learn to Get Along

I’m joining Five Minute Friday just to write for 5 minutes on a word. Today’s word is AGREE.

agree

Setting the timer: GO

I don’t always agree with my husband. We have been married for 46 years and we are still happily married. It’s not because I always agree with him. On the contrary I am probably the hardest person to live with. We are probably still together because he has patience in dealing with me.

I tend to jump at things before I can think them through.

I used to get totally angry at him when he said something I didn’t understand or didn’t agree with.

But – there is a bright side here. I am learning. Here are 5 things I am learning through my study of God’s Word.

Five Ways to Work Through Agreement

  1. If I start the day with study and writing my prayers to God – and listening to Him, I am better to prepared not to fall into the pit.
  2. Right now I am studying Proverbs in an online study group I lead. This practice is helping me watch what I say – because it’s a daily reminder.
  3. I am calmer overall. As I have grown closer to God I listen to Him more than I listen to myself. That’s a very important part of my peace.
  4. I know that to agree is not always possible. But to listen to his side is possible. I’m learning to bite my tongue and try to hear the other side.
  5. I’ve seen my anger in the past. I’ve seen how I like to control. Knowing these sins helps me learn to tread more carefully as I know what triggers my reactions. SELF.

Time’s Up.. 5 minutes goes quickly.

Here is a selection of wisdom that God has shown me this month on my words and my tongue.

agree

agree

agree

agreeDo you have trouble being agreeable? Can you see ways to curb your tongue? Can you find a way to negotiate between you and someone else?

One more thought. I always need to agree with God and what I hear from Him. There is no way I want to disagree with what He says.

A few other thoughts on this matter and why it’s hard to agree.

What can I learn from a Saguaro Cactus?

33 Dots: If I can do it, so can you.

I’m continuing to use those 33 dots. I find my imagination is expanding and I am painting without the use of photos as ideas. Today I wasn’t sure … was it an animal again? But no, wait I see a saguaro cactus. So that’s what I drew.

cactus

I use 33 randomly placed dots. Then I outline without going over or crossing a line. Then I figure out what it might be. Sometimes I will erase a line. Certainly I add more lines.

cactus

You can see the dots and then I connected them.

When I went to draw it I eliminated some of the lines. And this is what I got.

cactus

Thoughts on a cactus and scripture:

As I thought about the cacti here in Arizona I recall that they can last a long time without water. However, when it rains they soak it up. They get really fat. This will sustain them for long periods of drought.

When we get into a dry spot (sickness, worry, fear, etc.) we will have enough of God’s water to sustain us.

This reminded me of the filling up of the stores from God’s Word. From 1 Timothy 6:19 in The Message.

“Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage—to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life.” (my bolding)

Sometimes these cacti grow to be 40 feet tall. Their lifespan can exceed 150 years. Harming a saguaro in any manner is against the law in Arizona.

I want to grow tall in the Lord. I want to be filled up with all the nourishment I need for the dry spells.

Here is my final picture of the cactus.

What do I need to motivate me towards a disciplined life?

Motivate at Five Minute Friday

It’s Five Minute Friday and the first one of the year. The word this week is MOTIVATE.

Motivate

From Unsplash ben-white-146950

That’s a great word for 2018. MOTIVATE.

My Word for this year is GO FORTH. (There will be more coming about this in the next few weeks.)

So that means I need to be motivated to get going. How do I do that?

First thing I do is pray for God’s wisdom. And since we just started studying Proverbs in Growing Through God’s Word Facebook Group, I’m learning more and more.

Here are the first 5 verses I picked out from Proverbs 1-5. Join us as we continue to grow with God through His Word. Get motivated to study God’s Word.

motivate

This year I think God has me pointed towards motivating Christian writers. If you are a Christian writer I would love to hear from you. Email Janis.

I believe God wants all His writers to be in the Word.

It doesn’t matter the amount of time but the quality and focus of that time. That’s why I like reading short passages and then using my SIMPLE method to study them. Even meditating on a verse and then listening to His thoughts can set you on fire for the day.

My mornings are the best fruit of my day.

Not only do I study God’s Word but I take time to ask Him to talk to me. I am pushing myself to have discipline to LISTEN to Him.

motivate

That means I need to do 3 important things.

Get up early

Yes for me, as I said, the mornings are the most productive and they also inspire me onward for the rest of the day. So for the past 16 years God has been waking me up – ever since I asked Him to do that.

Have a passage to focus on

I find when I am in a special study I learn more. Otherwise I might look at my Bible and say, “oh where do I start?”. So for the past years I have tried various methods to get me disciplined. I have studied prayer scriptures, gone through books of the Bible one verse at a time, and studied words in the Bible. There are many methods of doing this. Find yours and keep with it.

Pray

I pray before I start my day. I pray during my studying. Then I have the best time writing my prayers and then LISTENING for His answer.

Time is up. Lots more to say. Join us at Five Minute Friday.

You can find lots of my thoughts on faith, prayer, the Bible, art and journaling on my Medium page. I would love you to follow me there.

Do you check out a Fortune Teller?

Ask a Fortune Teller

Is there a way out of this darkness we find ourselves in? I know some people ask a fortune teller? or look at their astrology sign for advice.

You can listen to this podcast on Hope Stream Radio: Ask A Fortune Teller.

fortune teller

In my study of Isaiah I see many familiarities with our situations today.

Listen to Isaiah 8:19 from The Message

When people tell you, “Try out the fortunetellers.
Consult the spiritualists.
Why not tap into the spirit-world,
get in touch with the dead?”

Does this sound familiar?

Have you read the papers? – the Internet. There are always pages for Astrology. People ask, “What sign are you?” And there are still fortune tellers too.

The word “luck” is bandied about everywhere. “Good luck.” “Oh you were lucky.” “As luck would have it.”

People in the time of Isaiah had lost their belief in God.

They searched for answers in other places – even fortune tellers. But they were the wrong places. They suffered from invasion and hunger. They felt distressed with all that was happening around them.

Today we see the distress in people – God’s people too. What’s the answer? (tweet this)

Are they looking in the right places? I think maybe not.

If we look at the books lining the shelves in bookstores. The “self-help” section is full. And look at all the new age therapies.

But it’s interesting that the secular world at this time in our history is also looking at meditation, peace, focus, commitment, community, love, friendships. Don’t those sound like terms from God’s Word?

But did the Israelites ask God for help? Did they humble themselves to acknowledge the need for God? NO they did not.

Where does the world look for answers?

They look to movie stars, sport stars, scientists, businessmen and the charismatic words of leaders. They check out spiritualists, karma, and others.

Did the people of Israel do the same thing? YES

Listen to Isaiah 8:21-22

Frustrated and famished,
they try one thing after another.
When nothing works out they get angry,
cursing first this god and then that one,
Looking this way and that,
up, down, and sideways—and seeing nothing,
A blank wall, an empty hole.
They end up in the dark with nothing.

But where does Isaiah tell them to look?

Isaiah 8:20

Tell them, “No, we’re going to study the Scriptures.”

fortune teller

They are told to look to the Scriptures – God’s Word. Because we are blessed with the Old Testament and the New Testament we can see more than the people in Isaiah’s time.

How are we going to get out of the darkness in this world? (Tweet this)

The same as what Isaiah told God’s people:

Ask God and study His Word.

This is relevant for us today. If you are in distress cry out to God and study His Word in the Bible.

The people in Isaiah’s time did not have the light of Jesus yet. We do. We have no excuses.

We have Father, Son and Holy Spirit – our Triune God. We can speak and ask directly to God through Jesus. We can freely study the Word of God.

We have no reasons to live in darkness. The Light has come.
The Light is here. Thanks be to God.

May I pray for you and me?

Lord Jesus, we acknowledge that we need you. We really need you. Please enter into our thoughts, our emotions and our actions. Teach us to ask for help and teach us that daily reading of Your Word will strengthen and guide us. In Your Name, Jesus I pray. Amen.

Until next time if you feel you are in darkness, look to the light of Jesus. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. Pick up a Bible and start reading.

Word of God Speak – How Can We Find Peace this Christmas?

Word of God Speak – How Can We Find Peace this Christmas?

Peace

Watercolour by Janis Cox – Reflections

This is the last Sunday in Advent – PEACE. Here is my acronym for peace.

{Aside: Much to my chagrin it looks as if JOY is the last Sunday in Advent, unless our Pastor got it wrong. 🙁 So the last two weeks are reversed}

Put Everything Aside Christ Enters

Although I started studying 1 Corinthians 2:4-5, I decided to memorize another Scripture. It came from my looking at other references and seemed to fit best with this Advent week of PEACE.

We will be memorizing Romans 15:13. See below.

Following my SIMPLE Method of Bible Study I looked at 1 Corinthians 2:4-5.

S – Say the Passage out loud. Check other versions.

My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power (1 Corinthians 2:4-5.NIV).

I – Interpret the passage – check footnotes, references and commentaries.

Romans 15:13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 14:17

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,

1 Thessalonians 1:5

because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.

All of these passages turned me to the true meaning of Christ’s birth. The filling up with the Holy Spirit. Those who lived during His time on earth could see and feel His power. Now we can do the same through the Holy Spirit.

M – Make a list of thoughts, questions and ideas.

The week before Christmas – the birth of our Lord.

We’ve discussed HOPE, LOVE and JOY. and now Jesus brings PEACE too.

How can we find God’s peace?

Through the Power of the Holy Spirit.

At the beginning of 2015 I found my WORD for this year – Intentional. Intentional for Jesus.

I think it funny that at the end of this year I join Intentional Bloggers and Tribe Writers. It has been a year of change, of rethinking, of growing. I had to drop some first loves (Family and Faith Matters, and Under the Cover of Prayer Group Posts) and find my focus which is God’s Word.

I must deliberately give my sanctified life to God for His service, so He can use me as His Hands and His feet (Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest).

But it has been God’s POWER that has propelled me forward into uncharted waters:

I’m very excited to see what God has in store for 2016. I haven’t discovered my WORD for 2016 yet but I am getting some strong ideas. I will get back to you early in 2016.

P – Pray. After all your thoughts are expended – take time to talk to God and then to LISTEN to Him.

This time my prayer time was a jumble of ideas – probably because that is the way my mind has been going lately, – WILD,

L – Life Applications – Write down what you heard God speak.

I see a revival, a passion for hope, love, joy and peace in this world.

Nothing can stop God from moving in His people – NO THING.

Rely on the certainly of God’s redemptive power and He will create His own life in people (Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest).

This December has been filled with excitement by following Christ and not the world.

We are not going home to Canada for Christmas this year (we celebrated the family Christmas last weekend – yes a plane ride back and forth). I’m watching and waiting to see what God has in store for us.

I’m shaken by the news of the human trafficking that is happening around the world – and even in my province of Ontario. Watch the video from the Toronto Star and your eyes will be opened. I’m wearing a dress every day in December to remind me to pray and to advocate for those caught in human trafficking.

Ratanak Support Icon

I’m reminded of one of my favourite scriptures: Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

This is a great reminder before Christmas.

May Jesus be Christmas for you this year.

May you shine for Him.

May you be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.

Let’s be revived and revive others.

E – Exit the study with a written prayer.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus – for His coming to earth to see, to share to teach. Create in us Your life so we can know You more. We rely on You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Scripture and a Picture – How Can the Holy Spirit Help Us to Snatch and Catch?

Scripture and a Picture – How Can the Holy Spirit Help Us to Snatch and Catch?

Last weekend as I looked at my Scripture  to memorize for this week, God moved me from one Scripture to another and I ended up picking 1 Peter 1:8-9, HCSB to memorize for this week.

You love Him, though you have not seen Him. And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy, because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

1 Peter 1:9

While I listened to God I heard the word, “catch”. My mind instantly went to football, catching the ball and running with it towards the goal.

Because of my fascination with the word “catch” I looked it up on line in Greek. There were 2 meanings that interested me.

agreuó – original word -ἀγρεύω  (Strongs 64) means catch and capture

harpazó  –  original word -ἁρπάζω (Strongs 726) means to snatch

For the first one – capture. I see this as CATCH HIS FIRE, His Holy Spirit. And we can do that as we read His Word.

They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us (Luke 24:32, NIV)?”

For the second one – snatch. I see us snatching ourselves and others out of the fire.

Be merciful to those who doubt;  save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh (Jude 1:22-23, NIV).

I found two other instances of the word “snatch” – snatching from the fire. Amos 4:11 and Zechariah 3:2-5.

I believe we are called to be disciples of men (as in human beings). As we grow in God’s Word, we become stronger in our faith and can help others along the way.

As we run the race, clutching onto the Holy Spirit, dodging the world’s traps, we can also reach out to others and help them towards the goal, too.

As we memorize God’s Word, the Holy Spirit works in us to teach and change us. He also brings people into our paths whom we can encourage.

Prayer:

Father, Help us to learn Your Word. Help us not only to memorize but chew on it until it becomes part of who we are. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

I am continuing to study Titus using the SIMPLE Method of Bible Study and Ed Hird’s book Restoring Health. Today I am working through Titus 1:11.

If you want a PDF of the SIMPLE Bible Study –
please click on SIMPLE Bible Study by Janis Cox.

REstoring Health ed hird cover

Of course, I start with a prayer for God to open the Scripture to me.

S – Say the passage aloud.

They must be silenced because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach – and that for the sake of dishonest gain (Titus 1:11, NIVUK).

I – Identify the characters, the setting, and the circumstances surrounding this passage.

Since we have been following Titus verse by verse, if you are new here, you will need to go back to the beginning to better understand the characters, setting and circumstances.

Continuing from the last verse from last week:

They = mere talkers and deceivers

These deceivers are teaching things they ought not to teach.

M- Make a list of the thoughts, questions and ideas.

So how do we silence them? Everyone is involved – whole households. I wonder who the “they” were in Paul’s day. Were they people who knew God but started their own ideas? Or were they people who wanted to have people follow them – for the sake of dishonest gain. So they pretended to be “like” the apostles but without the sound doctrine of Jesus.

Were they Jewish rabbis who were following so closely to the rules they forgot to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with their God? (Micah 6:8) Remember Jesus got very angry when they turned the temple into a marketplace – Church is supposed to be a House of God.

I look at all that can deceive us. There is plenty. We have so much vying for our attention – TV, videos, movies, social media, sellers, Facebook ads, – all taking us on rabbit trails (some good some bad).

This all reminded me of Satan’s Letter.

What takes us away from the TRUTH – that we follow Jesus? Are we holding firmly to the trustworthy message as we have learned it from Jesus? (Titus 1:9)

P – Pray again for God’s guidance.

Make sure when you do this study that you take time for this step. Otherwise we are thinking our own thoughts and can be led astray.

L- Life – How can I apply what I have been studying to my life?

Deceivers come looking like goodness but they are covered up and we can’t see the truth behind them. Remember Satan is the devil in disguise. I chose the icon because Satan can  come looking like a Valentine.

the two greatest dangers to … the Kingdom of God, come from two directions, money and power… Money and power crucified Christ (E. Stanley Jones).

This reminded me again of the course by Dave Ramsey, Financial Peace. We need to get a handle on money so it doesn’t get a handle on us.

I wanted to look at all the areas of my life – all of them. Where could I be deceived?

Here is what I discovered.

POWER

That is self. I struggle with self sometimes, many times. I have to keep asking myself, am I going this for God or me?

SOCIAL MEDIA

I must watch how much time I spend on this. Which one should I focus on?

PROCRASTINATION

Of course I do what I like to do first, or what is most pressing. But maybe I need to stop and ask God where I need to focus my attention for that time?

ACTIVITIES/STUFF

God is really speaking to me about this. Is there something else I need to lay down?

About 10 years ago I heard my LIFE VERSE, “feed my lambs”. I have been trying to do this but I do go on rabbit trails. That is why this year my goal is to be Intentional to Restore my focus on God.

So in December I decided to stop writing for Inscribe, stop Under the Cover of Prayer, stop Family and Faith Matters.

I picked up being a contributor to Hope Stream Radio each Tuesday. I hope you listen to this wonderful online radio station.

And I keep hearing, do Sunday Stillness.

Of course then there are projects I need to still work on this. Which ones?

E – Exit the passage with a prayer for God to help you.

Lord, all of the things I am involved in are good things but they may not be where you want me to spend my time. Help me to wrestle through this. I am asking for clarification of the truth – the real road. Please point me in the right direction. Help me to learn the best way to “feed your lambs”. Help me clearly see and hear the deceivers. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

What is God’s Healing Counsel?

What is God’s Healing Counsel?

This morning as I was having my devotional time I came across a wonderful scripture which has stayed in my mind. (I generally follow a format I learned from the book “The Hour that Changes the World” by Dick Eastman. He breaks up the hour into sections and my devotional blog utilizes the “listening” portion. This one covers the reading of the Word and my thanksgiving.)

All praise to the God and Father of our Master, Jesus the Messiah! Father of all mercy! God of all healing counsel! He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us (2 Corinthians 1:3 -4,The Message).

Then I prayed:

Prayer:

Dear Father, I thank you very much for loving and accepting me as your child. I have experienced your healing counsel from the first day I asked you to be Lord and Saviour of my life.
Thank you so much for the healing which sometimes seemed a long time in coming but included lessons imprinted upon my heart with your great love.
Thank you for the opportunities you bring my way to share your love with others. It is an awesome privilege! Help me to speak your words of love and grace to them. I love you. Amen

I remembered a time when God brought opportunities for me to share His love.

Here is what I remembered.

I thought of someone who had come across my path as I was walking. We had conversed a couple times when she shared that she was having a biopsy done of her breast and was thoroughly frightened as her sister had just been diagnosed with cancer.

I told her I would pray for her. Then she said she wished she would know how to pray. We stopped at a pavilion in the park and as I held her hand, she prayed for God to come into her life and also to let the biopsy be negative.

God did answer her prayer in the affirmative and she is cancer free.

Although we parted that next week I pray God will bring someone else into her life with His healing counsel.
