What can I learn from a Saguaro Cactus?

33 Dots: If I can do it, so can you.

I’m continuing to use those 33 dots. I find my imagination is expanding and I am painting without the use of photos as ideas. Today I wasn’t sure … was it an animal again? But no, wait I see a saguaro cactus. So that’s what I drew.

I use 33 randomly placed dots. Then I outline without going over or crossing a line. Then I figure out what it might be. Sometimes I will erase a line. Certainly I add more lines.

You can see the dots and then I connected them.

When I went to draw it I eliminated some of the lines. And this is what I got.

Thoughts on a cactus and scripture:

As I thought about the cacti here in Arizona I recall that they can last a long time without water. However, when it rains they soak it up. They get really fat. This will sustain them for long periods of drought.

When we get into a dry spot (sickness, worry, fear, etc.) we will have enough of God’s water to sustain us.

This reminded me of the filling up of the stores from God’s Word. From 1 Timothy 6:19 in The Message.

“Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage—to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life.” (my bolding)

Sometimes these cacti grow to be 40 feet tall. Their lifespan can exceed 150 years. Harming a saguaro in any manner is against the law in Arizona.

I want to grow tall in the Lord. I want to be filled up with all the nourishment I need for the dry spells.

Here is my final picture of the cactus.

What do you learn from Scripture? Do you make it a daily discipline?

Heart Message 3 – Heart for Church

My Heart for Church and a Linkup

I started to think about church this morning and all the different questions of why we attend church and how God speaks to me through church involvement. I want to show you my heart for Church.

My church experiences haven’t been without heartache and frustration. But during it all I never stopped going to church and God has been faithful to show me that indeed church is essential to my growth in Him.

My Home Church – Haliburton Unitedheart for church

In Haliburton, Ontario where we live, we attend a small church  (maybe 150 people total) in the village. It is a three pastoral charge which means that most Sundays our minister does three services starting at 8:30 am until about 1pm. We are the last stop on his Morgathon – yes that’s what we call it. Our minister’s name is Rev. Harry Morgan. Only if you have supplied for him would you know the energy it takes to do those services. As I followed Ali Matthews one Sunday when she supplied for Harry, although I didn’t do any preaching – I just greeted and set up and drove, I felt exhausted by 1pm.

Contemporary Service

Decorated Christmas tree

As you can see in the pictures above our church loves to decorate when we celebrate a season.

Once a month we have a contemporary service. Harry plays the guitar so it falls well into his gifts to do this. My hubby and I like the contemporary service. I am an upbeat person and the guitar (and sometimes drums) makes me feel alive. I sing the words and remember them. Our songs have many words taken from Scriptures and this is a good way to memorize God’s Word.

We have attended Haliburton United since 2004 after we moved to the village. As a Bible-based church we focus on God’s Word and our motto is “To Know Christ and Make Him Known”.  My knowledge of the Bible has increased exponentially since we have been going there. Harry encourages us to read and study God’s Word daily – and I do.

What else do I like about our church?

We are community based – we house an Adult Day Care; an Outreach program for moms; we have community dinners, and choirs practice under our roof. We run 2 Bible studies as well.

Our minister holds “Bible Beer and Burgers – BBB” once a month in a restaurant in town bringing people in who won’t necessarily attend church, to ask questions and talk on a certain topic. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Harry also tapes his sermons. You can listen to them here.

Our New Church In Arizona – Via Church

heart for church

Then we leave town in October and head to Arizona. We have attended a number of churches down here over the past 6 years. We haven’t found the “right” one yet. But we are attending a lovely church that might be the “right” one. It is called Via Church. This Sunday we will join a group called Merge to find out more about this church. We enjoy the music and the teachings have been very thorough and pointed about reading God’s Word every day. This church’s goal focuses on reaching out to the community and getting Christ into the community. They are a much bigger church than we are used to in Canada, so it’s hard, as Snowbirds, to get connected. I will be working on it this winter – to actually get connected.

The Pastor also tapes his services. You can see and hear them here.

I attend church regularly because I have a heart for church (tweet this)

In both churches I love the praise and worship time. As we sing to God I feel that I can see Him smiling and saying, “Well done”.

It was Jesus’ habit to attend the synagogue regularly so I know that it must be important.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:13, NIV).

What are your feelings about church? Does church warm your heart? Do you have a heart for church? (tweet this)

Sunday Stillness – Looking Ahead with a Survey

Sunday Stillness – Looking Ahead with a Survey

Saying-Goodbye-to-Arizona

I hope to continue my study of Titus soon using my SIMPLE Method of Bible Study.

We have made the transition quite well back from Arizona to Haliburton. [I do have to clarify because I seem to be confusing my readers – we are Canadians who live in Haliburton and winter in Arizona.]

My focus in the past week has been to source natural food products. Since we are basically eating a Paleo diet, that means finding good sources for free range chicken (and their eggs), grass fed beef and pork. Of course we are always looking for organic everything.

My garden plans are coming along thanks to a wise friend. We live in deer, skunk, gopher, and rabbit country. I hope to post pictures of my progress. We had a garden many years ago but that was in my fenced backyard in the city. This is entirely different in the country.

Welcome-back-to-Haliburton

In the meantime I want to write blog posts to inform, enrich and excite your lives. For this reason I have made used Survey Monkey to make a questionnaire with a very easy click answer form.

Would you please take a moment to help me best serve you with posts that you will enjoy?

FIVE MINUTE FRIDAYS – Here

Five Minute Fridays – HERE

We live in two worlds – Arizona and Haliburton. When we arrive in each locale we state, “We are here”.

Green Trees

Arizona

Haliburton

I can tell you I am here. We are home – back in Ontario, Canada. On the way home we had a lovely time at with our grandchildren; we were able to pop in and see our daughter and new baby, as well as a surprise visit from another grandchild.

We had no problem getting the water started in our home. We have a pump and drain all our lines in the fall. Thank You, Lord. Everything has gone very well – except the weather.

Yes, we have the rain, snow, sleet, ice and wind. A welcome home gift. But we did get out to walk our little Snowball around the driveway and down to our mailbox.

But we are home and I know that I like living here (when I am here). And I like living in Arizona (when I am there). Do you know what I mean?

If you can be content wherever you are, that’s a good thing. And to live in the moment, not thinking of the past or worrying about tomorrow.

“for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances” (Philippians 4:11, NIV).

Here we are. And it is lovely.

I love the passage in Esther:

” And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14, NIV)?

I believe I am here because God wants me here – and I plan to keep watching and looking where He is working and following Him.

Glad to be back blogging again too.

Linking in with Lisa-Jo Baker and Five Minute Fridays.
