How Do You Handle Stress?

Recently I realized I had been making my days to be full with no time to just sit and breathe. I would either be on the computer, painting, doing woodworking, making meals, seeing shows, dancing, going for walks or at the gym. S

I read the newspaper during breakfast.

I checked my phone at lunch.

It was only at dinner that hubby and I turned off our devices and concentrated on talking. That usually led to fact-checking on the computer. lol 🙂

My husband and I seldom get mad at each other — certainly not yelling. But this week it happened. I lost my temper — big time.

I felt tired, anxious, upset and mad.

This had happened before!

I wrote about how I felt and how not to get into that situation again. I was stressed.

I’ve written before about that lesson. I have to keep reviewing the lessons myself.

But I realized seeing the stress is not enough.

I needed to look at this deeper. To look at days gone by and learn again so I don’t go down into this mire again. God teaches us to remember in His Word.

Remember your history,
    your long and rich history. (Isaiah 46:9, MSG)

Former memories

This past week reminded me of years ago.

As soon as we started our business, I went back to work as a part-time teacher because there had to be some income and extra health benefits and life insurance. In our second year of business, I went back to full-time teaching while still helping with the business. I also took courses for credit in my teaching profession. And I signed up to be the one in charge of all the athletics in our school.

We had three kids ages 14, 12 and 8. They were in three different schools at one time; high school, junior high and public school. Juggling all those balls took a toll on me, and wrecked my body because I didn’t know how to stop taking on too many things.

I didn’t know I needed to stop.

I didn’t know how to stop.

Over the next five years, my health took a slide downwards.

I couldn’t walk upstairs (knee problems). Lifting my hand above my shoulder (writing on the blackboard became increasingly difficult). I developed TMJ (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction) so my jaw was very sore. Because I clenched my teeth at night,  my whole body ached.

I got angry easily. I yelled. I complained. I ranted.

I was fearful, and not healthy.

I felt stressed every minute of the day.

I was a mess.

I decided to take a half-time position in teaching to see if that helped. I visited a physiotherapist and massage therapist.

But I still kept doing things.

I didn’t stop.

I decided to take a leave of absence from teaching for 2 years. But I went back to our business and upgraded our technology, expanded our office space, and hired two employees. I didn’t stop.

It took some time but finally, I understood.

Two things happened

  1. I saw the problem.
  2. I worked at the problem.

A decorative plate reminded me to “stop and smell the roses”. This is what finally helped me — to slow down, take breaks, be still.

In this world that seems to be running faster and faster, we need to STOP.

The quality of time you have for downtime is important to your mental and physical health. It helps deal with stress.

Here are 9 ways to reclaim your peace and health and reduce stress

  • Take breaks during the day. Even 10 minutes can refresh your spirit, mind and soul. Take a stroll (notice I didn’t say walk) through somewhere green — with life surrounding you. Dance around for a few minutes to release tension.
  • Take deep breaths once an hour to bring in the needed oxygen to your brain.
  • Plan vacations. Even small times away can refresh our bodies and spirits.
  • Date nights. If you are married, plan date nights with your spouse. Honestly, we forget to do that in our hurried lifestyles. Soon we drift apart. Be there to just be there, to enjoy each others’ company.
  • Turn off social media. This has been something that takes away from life — it doesn’t give life. We crave the dopamine that it elicits and we want more. We check our phones way too often. [I am guilty of this.]
  • Make a list. Sit down and look at all that you do. List everything out. Then circle the things that give you pleasure. Put a line under the things that have to be done anyway. See what remains. See if you can drop those things.
  • My Quiet spot. Whatever you want to call this — find time to be in a quiet spot. If you are a Believer, then sit with Jesus. Discuss things. If you are not, then sit with yourself and talk to yourself. And in both cases LISTEN to what you hear.
  • Read. Get a good book and plan time to sit and read. Not scan like we tend to do on computers. But read the book for enjoyment — not for what you can write about it later. lol 🙂 [I am at fault for this.]
  • Listen or play music. That has a very calming effect on our souls. Classical music is wonderful to enjoy.

I am not there yet. As I read over my thoughts I need to do at least 4 things. Hopefully, as I do these my mind, body and spirit will recover. I especially need to focus on number 6.

 

To keep stress at bay I need to stop and smell the roses.

Lord, there are so many opportunities to “do” things. All may be good but all might not be in Your will or purpose for us. Help us to focus on Your voice so we can choose only those things that will do Your will. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

How to Overcome Fear on Hope Stream Radio.

There are many things that have changed in my life since that pivotal moment in 2001. On an October day that year I accepted Jesus as my Saviour and promised to follow Him.

One of the first scriptures I memorized was Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I chose that Scripture because my life had been filled with fears – big ones and little ones. When I didn’t know Jesus I tried to control everything, my husband, my kids and my friends. That desire to control is still there but the Holy Spirit reminds me when I step over that line.

Losing control – or actually giving up control to Jesus is not easy. To give control to Him I had to learn to trust Him.

I learned trust by intentionally focusing my life on learning more about Him, through prayer and studying my Bible. I made Jesus my top priority.

Fear can strangle us.

Our passion, desires and dreams can be locked in a prison when we fear. (tweet this)

My fears held me back from living a full life.

When I committed this scripture to memory it started to be a part of me. I could say:

Don’t be anxious about anything.

I watched as Jesus torn down the walls of my fear and my hesitancy to try new things. As I wrote in my journal I learned more about me and my relationship with our God.

When I hit a roadblock, I prayed through it. I didn’t panic. I prayed.

I started to watch God in action. I saw Him open doors to a new life for me. I got excited. I felt a passion.

When I used to worry, my stress level soared. It made my sick – physically.

I heard someone say:

The best worriers become the best pray-ers. (tweet this)

I guess that’s me. I turned worry into prayer. Not only was there less stress , there was actually great peace, an inner peace.

Yes – a calmness overcame my rigid hyperness. I remembered to breathe in Christ when I face trials. I prayer. He answered.

There are so many passages that helped me overcome my fear.

The one I love the best is from 2 Timothy 1:7:

For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control.

I learned it that way from the New English Translation.

Doesn’t that tell us everything we need to know. When we give our lives to Jesus – we become filled with His power and His love. And self-control, or discipline – what a fantastic byproduct.

The Message for today’s passage from Philippians says:

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

Breathe in Christ.

Genesis 2:7 says:

Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

Jesus came to give us back that breath of life. This is the way we can overcome fear. (tweet this)

Breathe in Christ and live.

May I pray for you and me?

Father God, You gave us life. You breathed into us. Fill us up with Christ. Breathe life back into our lives so we can live in freedom, freedom from fear and worry. Help us to be alive with Christ. Help us to learn this. We know it make take time, but guide each of us in our walk with You. May the God of peace guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. In Your name, Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Today is the second week of prayer scriptures. This week I am looking at my favourite one and the first one I memorized. Philippians 4:6-7. Do not be anxious. That says it all. How can we not worry? How can we not be afraid in this world we are inhabiting? Read on.

I memorized this one many years ago. But this week God led me to someone singing it to help us memorize it. Check it out on Youtube. If you haven’t memorized it yet this certainly will help.

Anxiety and prayer are two opposing forces in the Christian experience.

Prayer is the antidote for worry. The best worriers become the best pray-ers. (tweet this)

Peace – an inner peace can be found by letting it all be given to Jesus.

I love this song, I’m Trading my Sorrows. It sings: Prayer is a powerful weapon. Strongholds come tumbling down.

Here are some scriptures to check out:

Matthew 6:25-34 – the Father looks after us
Ephesians 6:18 – Pray in the spirit for all things; keep on praying
1 Timothy 2:1 – make requests for everyone
Isaiah 26:3 – Trust in God and keep at peace
John 14:27 – Jesus left us His peace. Do not let your hearts be troubled
Ephesians 3:19 – Be filled up with God

M- Make a list of thoughts, questions and ideas.

I made this the first scripture to memorize because I was filled with fear and worry. This helped to take away the fear. I kept repeating this passage over and over until it became part of me.

In everything – love those words. It reminds be of the widow woman who gave “everything”. 

It doesn’t say – sometimes, or often, or once in a while, or when I think I need Him.

But in everything I do – always, that means in all ways.

Prayer, Petition and Giving Thanks.

That reminds me of one of the ways we can pray using A.C.T.S.

P- Pray for God’s Guidance This is a silent time of prayer, listening to God Speak. When you have finished writing all your thoughts, questions and ideas then take time for prayer.

L- Life Application – Write down what you heard God speak (no matter how different from your own thoughts previously).

A few weeks ago I held a contest for a book called Peace for a Lifetime by Lisa Murray. If you are struggling with finding peace in this world this book is for you.

I have always found that taking a deep breath is the first thing I need to do when things are turned upside down. Breathe in deeply. Tell God that You know He is there with you and will remain with you through this trial. God will be there no matter what. He says: I am yours.

Pray for inspiration.

I always wonder how I found this peace that I have now. It is all God. It is all because of Jesus and what He has done for me.

For those struggling, I know it doesn’t seem possible but God can and will pull you through. Let Him wrap you up in His arms. Allow God to give you His love. Allow God to fill you with peace.

In Genesis 2:7 we hear that God breathed life into Adam and he became a living being. Jesus can do the same for us. Let Him breathe life back into you.

Jesus came to save us from worry and fear. Let Him help you. Let Him help you to say: Do not be anxious.

E- Exit with a prayer of confirmation, forgiveness, praise or acceptance.

Father, thank You for Your peace, the peace that passes all understanding as Jesus guards and protects our hearts and minds from the cares of this world. Help us to remember that prayer can combat worry. Let us breathe in the Holy Spirit and exhale all strife. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
