What Is It That I Really Need?

What is it that I Really Need?

I’m a little late for Five Minute Fridays but can’t resist writing on this week’s prompt: NEED. Five minutes to type out my thoughts. Here goes.

need

This morning I read two devotionals – Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest, and Jesus Calling. Both said the same things to me – I only need Jesus.

The time I spend with Jesus every morning is all I need to give me everything I need for the day. (Tweet this)

Strength, calmness, focus, joy, connection, inspiration and on and on.

Sarah Young wrote:

You must traverse this day like any other; one step at a time.

That reminded me of a favourite song, Step by Step. Here is a great version with Michael W Smith blending this song with Forever we will sing.

Each step forward we get closer to our Lord. I need that.

I read a scripture prayer this morning that I turned into a personal prayer. Do you do that? This reminds me of what I need.

Hebrews 13:20-21

This is what I wrote:

Lord, may You equip me with everything good for doing Your will and will You work in me, what is pleasing to You. (NIV)

And Jesus – put me together and provide me with everything I need to please You. Make me into what gives You most pleasure (The Message)

And how to do I do that?

James 4:7-8

Submit yourself, then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Come near to God and He will come near to you.

So what do I need? One answer: time with God. What about you? (Tweet this)

Time’s UP. Lots more to say but for this post I am supposed to write for 5 minutes only.

THE 4 NOWS

The 4 Nows

by Jan Cox

Early Morning Time with God

“God You are my God … and I will ever praise You… I will seek You in the morning and I will learn to walk in Your ways… step by step you’ll lead me and I’ll follow You all of my days.” Step by Step by Michael W. Smith

I sing that. And then I forget what it means.

This is NOT what I have been doing. Other things get crammed into my early mornings – my IPOD, ideas, my new book, surfing the Net. All these things seep into my time – this early morning time – with You.

It has happened before and I know it will happen again. But I am sorry. I have forgotten that You must be first.

So, I have come up with:

4 NOWS

NOW (this morning time) is a time for PRAYER.

I have not been vigilant. I do pray whenever the Spirit leads me but I have been lax lifting those people, whom I have promised to pray for, to You on a regular basis. So this morning time will be for that.

NOW (this morning time) is a time for PRAISE.

Whether it is through music or words – I want to sing Your praises. I have not done this enough. The Psalms would be a good place to start. Music too. My drive to Peterborough and back reminded me how much I love to sing praise to You.

NOW (this morning time) is a time for STUDY.

That means studying Your Word. I have been doing my Bible Study on returning from Poland – but not regularly. I have been back almost a month and I am not finished yet. I want to delve into the Word and hear what You want to tell me.

NOW (this morning time) is a time for YOU.

Yes, I want to remember to still my mind before You. I want to take this time to stop thinking and talking and start listening. I need this – it focuses me; it refreshes me; it gives me peace.

So here it a new start (once again). May my mornings be for You. May this time not be wasted with other “things”.

How about you? Do you live with God in the NOW? Can you take time, whether it is morning, afternoons, evening or the middle of the night – to meet with our God? It doesn’t matter how long but it does matter if you do it.

What do you think?

Here is Michael Smith singing Step by Step.

CONCENTRATED PRAYER

Concentrated Prayer

by Jan Cox

The top post  for Under the Cover of Prayer since its inception is: God Can Hear our Prayers. I can’t tell if that is the top post because of what I wrote or because people click on it as they need to know that God hears our prayers. Hopefully it is a bit of both.

I am totally certain that God can and does hear us when we pray – I am certain too that prayer is necessary – it breaks strongholds, it unleashes power and it creates a bond between God and us.

“I strongly suspect that if we saw all the difference even the tiniest of our prayers to God make, and all the people those little prayers were destined to affect, and all the consequences of those effects down through the centuries, we would be so paralyzed with awe at the power of prayer that we would be unable to get up off our knees for the rest of our lives.” Peter Kreeft

As I read through the Psalms I hear cries of despair, anger, remorse and pain. Then I see a break through – He hears and answers.

Here is one example from Psalm 6: 1-3, 9-10

O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am faint; O LORD, heal me, for my bones are in agony. My soul is in anguish. How long, O LORD, how long?

The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer. All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed; they will turn back in sudden disgrace.

If you are not a pray-er, or even if you are, – let’s pray more in 2012.

As I write this I am praying for my Mom. She needed a more specialized care facility and as of this post that prayer has been answered. Continuing to pray for caring hands and guidance for her comfort.

This is also my year of TRUST. So in my prayer I acknowledge that He has a plan – that I can trust Him to look after my Mom. But I continue to pray – a concentrated prayer. He knows my heart. He knows my concern. He hears me and I find peace.

There are many things to pray for during our lives. Lift them all to God. He can hear our prayers.

Prayer:

Father, You created us to be in touch with You. You want to hear from us. Help us to form our words to express our desires and our needs. As we trust – we pray – expecting that Your will be done. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Continuing to count my gifts to 1000 – up to 921
