What Is It That I Really Need?

What is it that I Really Need?

I’m a little late for Five Minute Fridays but can’t resist writing on this week’s prompt: NEED. Five minutes to type out my thoughts. Here goes.

need

This morning I read two devotionals – Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest, and Jesus Calling. Both said the same things to me – I only need Jesus.

The time I spend with Jesus every morning is all I need to give me everything I need for the day. (Tweet this)

Strength, calmness, focus, joy, connection, inspiration and on and on.

Sarah Young wrote:

You must traverse this day like any other; one step at a time.

That reminded me of a favourite song, Step by Step. Here is a great version with Michael W Smith blending this song with Forever we will sing.

Each step forward we get closer to our Lord. I need that.

I read a scripture prayer this morning that I turned into a personal prayer. Do you do that? This reminds me of what I need.

Hebrews 13:20-21

This is what I wrote:

Lord, may You equip me with everything good for doing Your will and will You work in me, what is pleasing to You. (NIV)

And Jesus – put me together and provide me with everything I need to please You. Make me into what gives You most pleasure (The Message)

And how to do I do that?

James 4:7-8

Submit yourself, then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Come near to God and He will come near to you.

So what do I need? One answer: time with God. What about you? (Tweet this)

Time’s UP. Lots more to say but for this post I am supposed to write for 5 minutes only.

Sunday Stillness – What type of glue are you using?

Sunday Stillness – What type of glue are you using?

Sarah Young Sept 2

From Jesus Calling – September 2:

Living in dependence on Me is a glorious adventure. Most people scurry around busily, trying to accomplish things in their own strength and ability. Some succeed enormously; others fail miserably. Both groups miss what life is meant to be: living and working in collaboration with Me (Jesus Calling, Sarah Young, September 2).

I read from Acts 17:28 in the NCV.

We live in Him. We walk in Him. We are in Him ( I found this in my own Bible, The Answer, New Century Version – but I can’t find these exact words on the Internet).

and from The Message:

Acts-17-28,-the-messageweb

I had to ask myself.

Am I really living in collaboration with Jesus?

I thought back to when I felt Him the most this summer. I have to say it happened during VBS – I got sick and relied on Him totally to feel joy, peace and actually have strength to continue.

Right now I am counting on Him again as I fight a sinus/ear problem that gives me a sound like a heartbeat in my head. I am learning to pray to be able to concentrate.

But it is also in everything I do – I try to be part of His plan. I love the word “collaborate”.

Definition of Collaborate:

work jointly on an activity, especially to produce or create something.

One synonym is glue yourself to.

That one stopped me –

What type of glue am I using? What type of glue are you using? (please tweet this)

Let’s discuss this, heere in the comments; on Facebook Author Janis Cox or Twitter Author Janis Cox. Let’s talk about the type of glue we can use to be stuck to Jesus.

Thoughtful Tuesdays – How we can make joy bubble over

Thoughtful Tuesdays – How we can make joy bubble over

bubbles-joy-web

My thoughts during the bout of flu were “how can I make this joyful”? During that time I tried to pray but really felt so bad I couldn’t do it. But I did read my Scriptures, and some blog posts. I did sing praise songs while soaking in the tub. I found I could accept what was happening if I just rested in God and thanked Him for little things.

It reminded me of the years that I would count the gifts. Ann Voskamp has a wonderful site where she encourages us to count the gifts, daily. I did that and now have many posts to show those weeks. Check out Counting Gifts.

And Margaret Feinberg has written a book and Bible study to show us how to Fight Back with Joy.

So my little picture came to me as I thought of joy. Joy that bubbles over. If we can have that joy – then others will see it. And they will be led to wanting to know more about Jesus.

I am creating something new in you: a bubbling spring of Joy that spills over into other’s lives. Do not mistake this Joy for you own or try to take credit for it in any way. Instead, watch in delight as My Spirit flows through you to bless others (Sarah Young, Jesus Calling, June 13).

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, JOY, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness (Galatians 5:22, NIV, my emphasis).

I learned a song while in Poland. The English words are:

Jesus’ love is bubbling over.
Jesus’ love is bubbling over.
Jesus’ love is bubbling over.
Hallelujah!

Have a great week.

Blessings,

Janis

Sunday Stillness – Fill out your Closer Connection to God Form

Fill out your Closer Connection to God Form

Fill-out-your-Closer-Connection-to-God-Form

from free digital photos.net

Last week I discussed how we need to show our closer connection to God so the world and we ourselves will know where we truly live.

This week I have made a fun “Closer Connection to God Form” for you to fill out.

1. When you wake up, what is your first thought?

what must I do today
oh no it’s morning all ready
Good morning, God, You are my One and Only?

2. On arising what do you do first?

start getting ready for my daily activities
wish I were back in bed as I head for a coffee
seek God by sitting quietly before Him (remember seek ye first the Kingdom of God)

3. Throughout the day as you go about your daily routine, when you encounter a problem what do you do?

get frustrated, maybe yell
find someone to blame
aks God for His help and guidance

4. Do you have control of your tongue during the day?

with my family
with my co-workers
with friends
with strangers (how about the drivers you feel are not driving the way they should)

Pray for a mouth that glorifies Him all day long, and you will be filled with a sense of His love and approval. ~ Beth Moore Living Beyond Yourself

5. With what do you fill the spaces of your day?

secular talk shows
secular TV
news
Christian music
quiet times of prayer and praise
shopping (just because you like it – buy, buy, buy)
social media
friends
family

6. At night before you close your eyes what do you do?

go right to sleep
read a light inspiring book
watch nightly news
have a quiet time with God to reflect on my day – the highs, the lows and to lay requests before Him

7. As you drift off to sleep what do you do?

remember where I live – in God’s Kingdom
give Him all my cares and concerns
fret about all that needs to be done tomorrow
fear what I saw in the news and can’t fall asleep

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7, NIV).

Heaven’s bells continually peal with that promise of My [Jesus] Presence. Some people never hear those bells because their minds are earthbound and their hearts are closed. (Jesus Calling)

Keep hearing the bells. Visit this world – enjoy it all – live life to the fullest but live in the Presence of God.

How did you do on the form? Is your closer connection to the world or God? If you want to be closer to God how would you change?

Let’s discuss this. I welcome your thoughts.

Watchful Wednesdays – How to Meet Jesus

Watchful Wednesdays – How to Meet Jesus

Jesus-Calling-August-16

Meet Me in early morning splendor. I eagerly await you there (Jesus Calling, August 16).

Yes, as I look through my windows the sun is draped in fog. I can see it trying to burn through. But it takes time.

Meeting Jesus is like that – it takes time for the Son to shine through. I read my Bible – I study His Word. I ask Him questions. I pray for others. But then just as the sun starts to shine through the fog, I sense His Presence in the room. A peace comes. In the stillness He is there.

When you see My Face in response to My love call, both of us are blessed (Jesus Calling, August 16). (tweet this)

Do you know Jesus? Have you asked Him to be Lord of your life? He will reveal Himself to you if you ask Him. That is all He is waiting for. He is waiting for you to ask Him. Do it now.

Do You Have Enough Dead Space? – Solitude – Part 1

Do You Have Enough Dead Space? – Solitude – Part 1

In reading a chapter called “Leave Yourself Alone” in a book called Your God is Too Safe by Mark Buchanan, I was captivated by three spiritual disciplines – Solitude, Silence and Secrecy.

I will try to tell you what I have learned in three sessions. Today’s is Solitude.

“The loss of dead space is killing us, inch by noisy inch” (page 176, Your God is Too Safe).

Mark talks about giving ourselves time for solitude – and in those moments Jesus can increase and we can decrease.

Jesus-Calling-0826

Painted by Janis Cox for Sunday Stillness at www.janiscox.com

Jesus sought solitude.

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed (Mark 1:35, NIV).

So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place (Mark 6:32, NIV).

Jesus was slow.

This is so unlike me. I move quickly. I act quickly. I need to S-L-O-W down.

Solitude – is a space for listening.

Solitude – is not aloneness.

Solitude – this is where we meet God.

If we only talk to God and do not listen we may never hear from Him.
(tweet this)

Can I go slower and do more? I believe God gives us that ability. Let’s take time for some solitude this week and see what happens.

Prayer:

Father,

we know that to hear from you we need to slow down, we need to stop and we need solitude. Please help us to find that time in the coming week so we get even closer to You. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Sunday Stillness – Jesus Calling -08/26

Sunday Stillness – Jesus Calling -08/26

Jesus-Calling-0826

So many times in the past few weeks God is reminding me of His Peace. Last week I drew a picture of a dove and this reminds me that He is our Peace.

Oswald Chambers said:

Look up and receive the undisturbedness of the Lord Jesus (Oswald Chambers, August 26).

If I focus on the problem I can obliterate God. (tweet this)

Jesus told us to let not our hearts be troubled. (John 14:1)

So I need to do exactly what I read in Jesus Calling – detach from the disturbances around me.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God (Psalm 42:11, NIV).

Please find time to detach from your world around you. Seek Jesus right now – find His Peace so you can relax and not let the circumstances touch your spirit.

Sunday Stillness – 1 Corinthians 14:33

Sunday Stillness – 1 Corinthians 14:33

1-Corinthians-14-33

As I prepare to go away on my trip to Poland this Scripture was highlighted in Jesus Calling. Perfect for me. As you know when you plan to go away there are many things to do. But God is the planner – He knows what to do – He gives me the time, and the peace to do it.

So I did a little sketch to remind me of this Scripture. Sometime I will get back to painting  pictures with my watercolours. But in the meantime the watercolour pencils are fun – but it was hard to make a light wash so I used my fingertips.

Right now we should be in Warsaw, Poland. Follow me on Facebook and Twitter.

Jesus-Calling

I bought a little sketch book recently and as I read the Bible, and my devotionals I have been using my new watercolour pencils to sketch what I feel.

As I read Jesus Calling on August 24th, I felt God’s presence and saw Him hovering over everything – the sea depicted me… full of ups and downs, but full of life.

You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely (Psalm 139:1-4, NIV).

How To Learn to Pray through the Scriptures

How To Learn to Pray through the Scriptures

by Janis Cox

Bible

Have you ever taken a Scripture and made a prayer from it? Lately I have found that this exercise has helped me in my prayer life.

I remember a number of years ago reading The Power of a Praying Wife. In this powerful book, Stormie Ormartian uses Scripture to write her prayers. Reading her devotional and then praying the prayers changed me. I wanted it to change my husband – but God knew otherwise – and it changed me instead.

Now I am reading Jesus Calling by Sarah Young. In this devotional there are also Scriptures at the bottom of each devotional. Those Scriptures help me communicate with God.

Last night I couldn’t sleep (both sinus headache and active mind)- so I got up, went downstairs (we were staying at my daughter’s house), and I took out my devotionals. I read both August 28 and 29. My eye went to these words from Psalm 63:

On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night (Psalm 63:6, NIV).

That was enough to start calming me down. Whatever had been on my mind left – and I started to rest in Him.

Most mornings I write out the Scriptures in Jesus Calling.

There is something powerful,
spiritual and exciting in writing out Scripture.
