Sunday Stillness – Is Distraction a good thing or bad?

Sunday Stillness – Is Distraction a good thing or bad?

I came away from the writers’ conference in Alberta (read about it here), all fired up to focus. Yes focus on what God is calling me to do. I have answered the three questions:

Why? Because I feel God is calling me to get as many people as I can into the Word, so He can talk to them about their lives. So my new title is Growing Through God’s Word.

Who? Anyone who desires to listen to God – men and women. And for children I will write children’s books that will focus on Growing With God. Tadeo Turtle was the beginning.

What? I want to follow God’s Word and speak about what He is saying to me and inspire others to listen to what He is saying to them. And as well as blogging I will venture out into speaking. You can listen to me at Hope Stream Radio. I am scheduled on Tuesdays and Saturdays. You can also listen to all my former podcasts on my Hope Stream Radio page. I have joined a Me Too Moments for Moms and am featured as a Mentor.

But then after making my list, thinking it through,  I got distracted with getting ready to go away (we are off to Arizona in three days of the time of posting this) and life in general and emails, social media, connections.

Now I realize that distractions are part of life. I had better embrace them. (tweet this)

I am not in a monastery or cloistered in a small cell – I am living, breathing and acting on everything.

This week started off by finally seeking help with my glasses. I had noticed that while driving I couldn’t see the signs without tilting my head downwards. My optician corrected it with a tilt. Great I could see. But it hurt. So I returned the next day. He adjusted it. Next day, I returned again  – it still hurt. Today, I think it is almost fixed. I am waiting until the end of the day to see if I have to return. That was time taken away – but I figure well spent as I can see clearly now.

I did a few phone calls to set up our return to Arizona. Still quite a few to do – the dreaded Bell call – I keep putting it off. (for my American readers – that is our Canadian Internet, phone provider).

But I also went outside and cut back our snowball tree and went for walks.

I read, I rested from jetlag. I connected with many people I met at the conference. I did my blogs.

And I know that all things work together for good – and I continue to do all things. They may feel distracting but they are truly living for God.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose  (Romans 8:28, NIV).

Just to prove the point – God showed me again – interrupted to go with my hubby and deliver something special to someone. Praising Him for all distractions that are part of His plan.

This weekend is our Canadian Thanksgiving. Let’s all give thanks in all circumstances. Praising God for always being with us.

Prayer:

Lord, we all live full lives on this earth – sometimes with focus and other times with distractions. Help us to live our lives fully for you in all we do, distractions and all. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Have a blessed Sunday Stillness.

Am I Spinning My Wheels?

Am I Spinning My Wheels?

by Janis Cox

Are-you-spinning-your-wheels-

Thanks to Photo Bucket for the Photo Stuck Vehicle.

With all the snow up north this winter I thought about a time when I became very stuck in that white stuff.

As I went on a mission to find furniture for a group of refugees we worked with, I drove into a parking lot. The snow in the lot didn’t look very deep. However when I tried to back up, I became stuck.

I couldn’t go forward or backward – I kept spinning my wheels.

People came to help. I would put the car into low gear and then they would push. I would put the car into reverse and they would push from the front. I tried rocking the car back and forth using the gears. Nothing – the car kept spinning.

Suddenly I remembered my hubby’s words, “Don’t forget you have automatic traction on this car. If you have trouble on a hill, take off the traction.”

Well this wasn’t a hill but I needed to take off the auto track, because every time I would slip a little, the car automatically braked. I took off the auto track and with one push out I came.

Do we carry an auto tracking device? Do we spin our wheels?

I think we do. I think my auto track device keeps me from moving by keeping me doing the same old thing. I am going nowhere and spinning my wheels.

What keeps me from moving forward?
What keeps me from following my dreams?
What keeps me from following Jesus’ leading?

In the next few weeks I plan to share what I have been hearing from God for my own life and maybe what is keeping me from expanding my territory?

Satan always want to distract us from the work God wants us to do.

Have you noticed this? Do you have an auto traction device that keeps putting brakes on God’s plans for your life?

Let’s start a discussion either here in the comments or on Facebook or on Twitter.

Answer the question:

Are you spinning your wheels?

Let’s find out what auto track we have turned on that is keeping us from moving with God.

If you want God to move, sometimes you have to make a move. ~ Mark Batterson in The Circle Maker

But Mark also says this:

If you keep trying, you are not failing … God is honored when you don’t give up. ~ Mark Batterson in The Circle Maker

Prayer:

Lord, there is something holding me back from expanding my territory for Your glory. Show me what it is. Release it – if it is something that you need me to do. Take off the auto brakes. Help me to move forward and follow your plans and lead. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

THE 4 NOWS

The 4 Nows

by Jan Cox

Early Morning Time with God

“God You are my God … and I will ever praise You… I will seek You in the morning and I will learn to walk in Your ways… step by step you’ll lead me and I’ll follow You all of my days.” Step by Step by Michael W. Smith

I sing that. And then I forget what it means.

This is NOT what I have been doing. Other things get crammed into my early mornings – my IPOD, ideas, my new book, surfing the Net. All these things seep into my time – this early morning time – with You.

It has happened before and I know it will happen again. But I am sorry. I have forgotten that You must be first.

So, I have come up with:

4 NOWS

NOW (this morning time) is a time for PRAYER.

I have not been vigilant. I do pray whenever the Spirit leads me but I have been lax lifting those people, whom I have promised to pray for, to You on a regular basis. So this morning time will be for that.

NOW (this morning time) is a time for PRAISE.

Whether it is through music or words – I want to sing Your praises. I have not done this enough. The Psalms would be a good place to start. Music too. My drive to Peterborough and back reminded me how much I love to sing praise to You.

NOW (this morning time) is a time for STUDY.

That means studying Your Word. I have been doing my Bible Study on returning from Poland – but not regularly. I have been back almost a month and I am not finished yet. I want to delve into the Word and hear what You want to tell me.

NOW (this morning time) is a time for YOU.

Yes, I want to remember to still my mind before You. I want to take this time to stop thinking and talking and start listening. I need this – it focuses me; it refreshes me; it gives me peace.

So here it a new start (once again). May my mornings be for You. May this time not be wasted with other “things”.

How about you? Do you live with God in the NOW? Can you take time, whether it is morning, afternoons, evening or the middle of the night – to meet with our God? It doesn’t matter how long but it does matter if you do it.

What do you think?

Here is Michael Smith singing Step by Step.

HOW ELSE CAN SATAN DISTRACT US?

This will be the end of my last week in Poland with International Messengers. I fly home next Tuesday.

For the past two weeks I have been showing you how Satan can steal our time and relationship with Jesus. First  What are you Tin Gods? Next How Busy are You?

This week:

How Else Can Satan Distract Us?

by Jan Cox

Satah

Satan Wants to Distract us from God

We have seen the ways that Satan tries to keep us away from God – in the past two weeks I have been posting a letter called Satan’s Meeting. This is the last part of that letter today.

Can Satan Distract Your Children from knowing God?

Satan continues to talk to his helpers. He discusses ways to keep our children from knowing the true God and Jesus.

“Give them Santa Claus to distract them from teaching their children the real meaning of Christmas. Give them an Easter bunny so they won’t talk about His resurrection and power over sin and death.”

Then he discusses what children do in their “free” time. Can they relax and talk to God?

“Even in their recreation, let them be excessive. Have them return from their recreation exhausted. Keep them too busy to go out in nature and reflect on God’s creation. Send them to amusement parks, sporting events, plays, concerts, and movies instead.”

Do your Children have time to Relax and Talk to God?

Satan wants them to have no TIME to seek God.

He says: “Keep them busy, busy, busy!”

What is Distracting you and your Children from God?

Then he asks us about our church and our church talk. This is a serious question. Are we concerned for one another or do we have ulterior motives?

Satan really hits us hard here.

He says, “And when they meet for spiritual fellowship, involve them in gossip and small talk so that they leave with troubled consciences.”

Do we actually know Our Church Sisters and Brothers? Do we care for them?

“Crowd their lives with so many good causes they have no time to seek power from Jesus. Soon they will be working in their own strength, sacrificing their health andfamily for the good of the cause.”

And what do we Do at Church? Really?

And then Satan ends with:

It will work! It will work!

Can we stop him? Can we put blinders on and ignore all that Satan has to distract us? Can we find the time to connect with our God?

Prayer:

Father, we want to know you more. We realize that Satan is up to no good. He wants to distract us from a relationship with You. Help us we pray. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

What do you think?

We would love to hear from you?

I will be back next week with a long list of my blessings – Counting my blessings.

LOUD – Five Minute Fridays

Linking to The Gypsy Mama on Fridays. I have 5 minutes to write. The word is LOUD.

Here I go:

LOUD

Snowbirds - Loud

I don’t really like loud music, especially the decibels that make my ears ring. But I love it loud enough that I can hear it.

Yes I think I have a slight hearing problem. I keep saying that I will get my ears checked. But I don’t. I know I don’t hear the timer on the stove when others do; I have to turn up the volume on the TV; I say “pardon” more and more.

It is important to hear clearly. That’s why I ask others to repeat what they have said because I want to know. I wonder if I should do the same for God – should I ask Him to repeat what He has said. Maybe I haven’t heard Him clearly.

There are many things that cover up God’s messages – my emotions, activities around me, other voices, my sense of self.

I need to get away from all the distractions of this world, in order to find the clear message of God.

If you want to join The Gypsy Mama in her Five Minute Fridays read below.

Here are the rules:

Around here we write for five minutes flat on Fridays.

We write because we love words and the relief it is to just write them without worrying if they’re just right or not. So we take five minutes on Friday and write like we used to run when we were kids.

On Fridays we write like we believe we can fly. Won’t you join us? (<—Tweet this!)

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
