Sunday Stillness – How to encourage each other

Sunday Stillness – How to encourage each other

Today’s thoughts are based on Titus 1:4, using my SIMPLE method of Bible study. I find it amazing how even this short, easy passage can bring so much to light. Always start my studying by praying for guidance.

S – Say the passage aloud.

To Titus, my true son in our common faith: grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus, our Saviour (Titus 1:4, NIV).

I – Identify the characters, the setting, and the circumstances surrounding this passage.

Once again Paul is talking to Titus who is left on Crete to fulfill God’s calling. This is a simple but profound greeting that Paul makes in all his letters. He calls Titus, “my true son”. Titus was a gentile convert and that makes this all the more amazing.

M- Make a list of the thoughts, questions and ideas.

I kept thinking about Christian believers – and why there is so much dissension if we all believe in Jesus as our Saviour. Why are there put downs of other Christians? Why put downs of government leaders – we are called to pray for them.

God gives us rules to follow – gives US rules to follow – not THEM. It is for our benefit to follow them. We need to be together in this fight against Satan. Even those in the world are not our enemies – Satan is.

Paul calls Titus my “true son”. True means sincere – where are the sincere Christians? We need to pray for Christian writers, for Christian churches and for Christian charities that they remain sincere in their faith and lives. We need God’s power in this world to overcome Satan.

Paul, by this greeting, tells Titus that he is important enough to deserve a letter. He took time to write to Titus.

An interesting historical aside: Ed tells us in his book that the Cretans are the direct ancestors of the biblical Philistines.

P – Pray again for God’s guidance.

L- Life – How can I apply what I have been studying to my life?

Paul took time for what was important to God – to encourage Titus in his ministry on Crete.

Encouragers: Writers for God are encouragers. We take time to write our thoughts, to communicate with one another and to the world.

There is no such thing as a genuine Christian faith that we make up on our own (Ed Hird, Restoring Health, page 31).

At the very heart of being healthy, of being sound is the gift of GRACE and PEACE ( ibid, my emphasis).

E – Exit the passage with a prayer for God to help you.

Lord, help us as followers of Jesus to encourage one another, to build up and not put down, to strengthen writers, pastors and leaders; to look to You at all times, good or bad. We know You are more than able. We and thank You for bringing us together. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

I am continuing on with my study of Titus – one verse at a time. Today’s thoughts are based on Titus 1:3 using the SIMPLE method of study.

S – Say the passage aloud.

and at His appointed season He brought His word to light through the preaching entrusted to me from God our Saviour (Titus 1:3, NIV).

I – Identify the characters, the setting, and the circumstances surrounding this passage.

Paul is speaking. He remembered how God spoke to him and entrusted him to spread the Gospel. God does intervene.

M- Make a list of the thoughts, questions and ideas.

It’s great to know that God has planned all of this. I love, “His appointed season”. And that God entrusted Paul – He knew Paul would do a good job. He chooses those whom He trusts and then He helps them to do the job He has planned.

A few days ago I watched The Star of Bethlehem. An amazing account of the actual star, the actual date, and the actual event. God had prepared it all in “His appointed season”. You can watch the video on You Tube.

P – Pray again for God’s guidance.

L- Life – How can I apply what I have been studying to my life?

What did I learn from this passage? I learned that we need to say “yes” to God. Paul said, “yes” – and we see all that God accomplished. Why can we trust God?

  1. God works in His appointed season.
  2. God will entrust us with the knowledge and power to do what He wills.
  3. God will command it – it will be strong enough for us NOT to ignore it.

E – Exit the passage with a prayer for God to help you.

Thank you Lord from choosing us to be your ambassadors, whether through writing, singing, hospitality, caring, loving others, giving or through any other means to spread your Word and love to others. Being the Light of Christ is Your command. Help us to listen and obey. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

The radical message of Jesus Christ hanging on a tree is the wisdom and power of God. Only the cross can transform hardened Cretan and North American pirates into holistically healthy leaders. Only God’s Word can bring light into our pirate hearts. (Ed Hird, Restoring Health, page 31).

Are your hearing from God? Is there something He is calling you to do?

Personally I have said yes to being a part of a new Christian online radio.

Am I nervous? Yes.
Is this stepping into a new venture. Yes.

But I am excited.

And when that happens God is behind it. More information will be coming on this as I know more. So far I have purchase a microphone and downloaded Audacity. My FIRST STEP.

Tell me your thoughts, dreams and visions. What is God telling you?

Let’s pray together. If you have any personal prayer requests, please email me at Janis.

Sunday Stillness – How to Team Up with God

Sunday Stillness – How to Team Up with God

How-to-team-up-with-God

If you read this week’s Friday Features you will know that I am excited again to be working through an excellent book and reading my Bible and praying at the same time.

Ed Hird has written his second book called, Restoring Health – Body, Mind and Spirit, based on Titus. His first book, Battle for the Soul of Canada, based on Timothy, inspired me in such a way that I wrote a Bible study to go with it.

The theme of Ed’s new book is exactly where I am at in my life.

My hubby and I are working on doing regular exercise, we are eating a different way, and I am focusing more and more on what the Bible says through my SIMPLE study.

So I decided to work my way through Titus, one or two verses at a time, along with Ed’s book and the SIMPLE method. For the next few weeks I will share snippets of where God is leading me as I read and study Titus.

I also have decided to try my memory work again.

A couple of years ago I joined Ann Voskamp and her challenge to memorize Colossians. A few days ago I found my video of that exercise and I felt a sense of accomplishment as I watched it. Each week I will work on memorizing a few verses from Titus. I would love for you to join me. I am sharing my video with you now from Colossians.

Here are my thoughts from the first verses in Titus.

Titus 1:1-2

S – Say the passage aloud.

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God’s elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness – a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time (NIV).

I – Identify the characters, the setting, and the circumstances surrounding this passage.

Ed does a great job explaining the background to Titus’ trip and his working in Crete. An island of pirates, who worshipped gods and goddesses, this was quite a task set before Titus. Paul had worked there previously and knew the deplorable moral level of the people. But Ed explains very well how pirates can become the best leaders when their focus is turned toward God, with righteousness and truth.

M- Make a list of the thoughts, questions and ideas.

I love the fact that knowledge and faith are tantamount to Paul. He knows the truth can be life-changing.

Truth is conceptual and experiential. The truth is meant to be known both objectively and subjectively (Ed Hird, page 25).

Godliness is biblical healthiness. Godliness is meant to make you more, not less human (Ed Hird, page 25).

So to be Christ-like I have to do that in my body, my mind and my spirit.

Integrated health and godliness are apostolic priorities (Ed Hird, page 26).

I love the hope – and the promise of eternal life. And God “does not lie”. We can trust Him in what He says. I cannot stand lies. I think that is one of the worst things we can do – to ourselves and others.

Imagine what a newfound honesty could do in restoring godliness and health to our North American business and governments (Ed Hird, Page 26).

Satan’s plausible lie is that I do not have time to be holistically healthy (ibid.)

Why do I resist getting well? Are there things more important than my body, mind and spirit? If so, what are they? And how can I affect a change?

P – Pray again for God’s guidance.

L- Life – How can I apply what I have been studying to my life?

This has to be a team effort for restoring my health and my hubby’s. With the team of God and us – things can be changed. But we have to encourage one another. It is not just food that will make the necessary changes. We must change our mind sets – to know we are working toward a more healthy way of life. We do a lot of walking but maybe we need to incorporate another type of exercise. And we continue to feed our spirits through discussions, prayer and church services.

E – Exit the passage with a prayer for God to help you.

Lord, help us focus on what you want us to focus on. Show us how we can change in our bodies, our minds and our spirits. I thank You for leading us and guiding us to a better understanding of our whole health in order to serve You in the best way possible. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Let this life be a team effort – God and me.

Friday Features: How I learn so much from Ed Hird’s books

Friday Features: How I learn so much from Ed Hird’s books

Battle for the Soul of Canada front cover

A few years back I had the pleasure to have dinner with Ed Hird and Janet Sketchley before we attended The Word Guild Awards. Ed had just written Battle for the Soul of Canada, based on Timothy. As he talked about his book I got more and more animated and excited. After the awards and the Write!Canada Conference I went home, read through his book and decided to write a Bible Study based on some of the chapters. It amazed me how quickly the appropriate Scriptures for each section came to me, and how the questions made sense. The Bible Study is available for free by emailing Janis – in PDF, mobi and epub.

Ed now has his second book out Restoring Health – Mind, Body and Spirit. This book is based on Titus. Once again as I read his book I become excited. It is packed full of information and practical suggestions of how to become healthy leaders. I am using my SIMPLE method of study for each of the verses, and then reading what Ed has to say. My excitement is growing. Maybe I will ask if I can do another Bible study based on his book?

Two books – awesome reading. I urge you to check out both of these wonderful spirit-filled books.

I am writing over at Family and Faith Matters today. I believe that what you eat makes a difference.

I am reading Ed Hird’s new book called, Restoring Health, Body, Mind and Spirit. I also watched Fed Up, the new movie with Katie Couric.

From Ed’s book:

Health for Paul [Apostle Paul] was holistic, embracing our whole life in body, mind and spirit.
