Watchful Wednesdays – #WhatDoesLoveRequireofme?

whatdoestheLordrequireofme

Read 1 Corinthians 13

That’s a lot of reading. But it also tells us how to love.

Are you stuck in the law or living the gospel of grace?  (tweetable)

How often do we judge or criticize others? Last week I attended a writers conference. A speaker talked to us for a few moments – then stopped and said something like: “Okay I know some of you were asking yourselves why I chose a deep blue today, and whether I wore earrings, and I wonder how she can speak about this topic?” Then she answered those questions and said: “Okay, now that we have those judgments out of the way, let’s get on with learning about our topic”.

It is so true that we look, we criticize, we judge. Then we tell ourselves – Stop that. We know we shouldn’t be doing this. We do it silently in our heads. But you know what – God knows our hearts and minds. We can’t hide from him. I need to confess, do you?

We do have to stick to the Word of God. We do have to keep with what He tells us. But He also tells us to love others. So we reach out – without judgment, and love.

Jesus did not let any institution interfere with his love for individuals
~ Philip Yancey (tweetable).

Are your words building up or tearing down? Great song by Hawk Nelson – Words. You can find it down below.

In each of the following areas where do you need to extend grace?

        • family
        • friends
        • co-workers
        • neighbours
        • government leaders

Remember we are called to pray for all people – including government leaders. And we are called to love them too.

This week our church started a series called #whatdoesloverequireofme based on Micah 6:8.

Prayer:

Open the eyes of our hearts, Lord. Let us see people as You see them. Keep our hearts pure and loving.

Wednesday’s Word – Join

JOIN

I have thoroughly enjoyed Wednesday’s Word and Sunday Stillness. But the time has come to join them together. After much waffling, praying and thinking I am going to keep Sunday Stillness and drop Wednesday’s Word.

This will be the last time to link to Wednesday’s Word. Let’s contact as many posters as we can this week – encourage them in their writing and studying of God’s Word.

Please continue to link your posts to Sunday Stillness – even if you have no picture but a word from God. I love this community we have built from both sites.

My last word – Join

God asks us to join Him in spreading His word – that is actually right from His Word.

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19, NLT).

Those who have linked to both Sunday Stillness and Wednesday’s Word have joined God to train others in the Word. And as we train others we train ourselves.

Let us continue to do so. Link – comment – post.

That way we learn, encourage and spread the Good News.

This is the last Wednesday’s Word Community. Please check the rules of Wednesday’s Word if you are here for the first time. Feel free to add your link below about God’s Word. And we all love comments.

Things come to an end – but there is always a new beginning. Next week join me at Sunday Stillness.

After you link please go to the blog that is in front of you and comment on their site. Words of encouragement mean so much to each of us. If you have time visit more of the writers.

WEDNESDAY’S WORD – Worship

Wednesday’s Word – Worship

Worship by Janis Cox

Watercolour Painting by Janis Cox

Sunday was Ascension Sunday – and we heard a great sermon called “Home Again”. Some of the truths I learned about worship:

      • worship is not just singing to God
      • worship is exercising your spirit (your mind and feelings can be part of this)
      • one of the keys to spiritual power is worship
      • to exercise our spirits we need to work at it – it is like a muscle that needs to be stretched and toned
      • when we sing we need to listen and appreciate the words we are singing
      • we exist to tap into the power of the risen Christ
      • if Jesus is home again, then we are at home with Him
      • the age to study the Bible is now
      • Jesus is at home now preparing a place for us.

That last one struck home as that is the first piece of Scripture I memorized as a child at a Bible camp:

“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.  In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:1-6, KJV).

As I worship – whether in prayer, in singing, in walking outside – every way I worship I am working at being aware of God, thanking Him and coming into His Presence.

“Offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – This is your spiritual act of worship” (Romans 12:1, NIV).

This week let’s try to exercise our spiritual muscle. (tweet this)

Each Wednesday we hold a Wednesday’s Word Community. Please check the rules of Wednesday’s Word if you are here for the first time. Feel free to add your link below about God’s Word. And we all love comments.

May you look at worship in a different way this week.

WEDNESDAY’S WORD – Transformed

Wednesday’s Word – Transformed

Empty

As we head toward Easter I think back at the difference that Easter means to me now compared to earlier -before I understood who Jesus is.

I found a poem I had written a few years ago.

I thought I would share it with you today. It is based on Romans 12:1-2.

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Inside Out

Dry, brittle
Easily hurt
Lifeless
Angry, unsure
Taking hold of life
By sheer will.

Exert control, demand
Expect everyone
To heed my call.
EMPTY

Jesus entered
Sensed my struggle
Asked me to lay it down.

Pierced my soul
With life-giving blood
And turned me inside out.

Released my fear
Sorrow and pain
Mercy washed over me.

Showed me love,
Patience and passion
And life with an Eternity.

WEDNESDAY’S WORD – Aware

Wednesday’s Word – Aware

As I try to be more intentional of what God is showing me I know I have to be more aware of people; their body language, and their underlying words. I am trying to not be so agenda driven and trying to be more in tune with the Holy Spirit.

This is not easy. When I have “things to do”, “places to go” and “people to see” I want to do them.

I struggle with letting go.

But each day gets a little easier as I try to focus on what needs to be done in the time I have and let all the rest fade into Neverland. It is hard for a task-oriented person to say, “oh well I don’t have to do that”. But it is possible! With God’s help.

“If you are God-centered, you will adjust your life to what God wants to do” (Experiencing God, Henry Blackaby). Tweet this.

This is what I am learning from my Bible study. Blackaby states quite clearly that:

God can interrupt what I am doing anytime He wants. Tweet this.

But I have to be aware of it so I can change my focus and obey Him.

It is working with my husband, (I think). I am trying very hard not to be totally into my work all the time so that I can actually have time to listen to him. Well God wants me to do the same thing.

This week is a case in point. I was asked to do a storytelling for the Sunday school this past Sunday. Well – you know I had a zillion things to do already. When would I have time to concentrate and learn a story? But …. I said YES because I knew God gave me this opportunity to try this. And you know what? –

God gave me the time (He has control of time, you know);
He gave me the confidence; and He gave me the energy and passion.

I had a wonderful time.

So – are you focussed on your “stuff” or are you becoming aware of what God is doing  – and following Him?

Today is Wednesday’s Word LINKUP.

If you have something you have learned from God, please share in the link below. If you are here for the first time please check out the Rules for Linking. Remember to leave a comment to at least the person ahead of you. We ALL need encouragement as we write for Him.

Comments are always welcome. Please see the list on my sidebar where I link with others to spread God’s Word.

Blessings,

Janis

WEDNESDAY’S WORD – Obey

Wednesday’s Word – OBEY

Sometimes I feel like I am stretched to the last ounce of my strength and time. So how can I do all the things that I think God has put before me?

Then He shows me:

Trust me enough to spend ample time with me and I will give you time. “I am able to bend time and events in your favor” (Jesus Calling, February 10).

And it works. In obedience I put Him first every day. In prayer, in study and meditation. And when I feel like I have no more energy left. I stop – and pray – rest in Him for a few minutes. REVIVED. Ready to tackle a little bit more.

So this week OBEY has been at the top of my list. It means to turn to God. I learned three important steps to obedience:

1. Don’t wait for God to come to you.

2.  Your mind is a gift from God – Use it. Choose to obey the Holy Spirit.  Click to Tweet

“we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5, NIV).

3.  Prod your memory. Wake it up.

The word “remember” is spoken many times in the Bible. I have joined the Romans Project to help me remember God’s Word. And I also have been learning a Scripture a week in Experiencing God.

So memorize Scripture. You can do it.

“My son, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,” (Proverbs 3:1, NIV).

“Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” (John 14:21, NIV).

If I want to have a close relationship with God I need to learn to obey.

What do you think? Are there ways that you have learned to obey? I would love to hear from you.

WHY DO I BLOG?

Why Do I Blog?

I ask everything of the Lord. The other day I said, “Okay Lord, you have led me to write, to publish a book and now you are asking me to blog more. Why?” In a few days, He answered me.

The answer: Togetherness

Wednesday’s Word – Together.

Scripture upon scripture came to me this week and each one had to do with building relationships. First we need to build a personal relationship with God through Jesus. Then we build relationships with other believers so we can grow in our faith together.

“”Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God, with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.”” [a memory verse for Bible study]

And the second is like it: “Love your neighbour as yourself””(Matthew 22: 37-39, NIV).

Next in my memory work for Romans I came upon:

“that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith” (Romans 1:12, NIV)

Building a community of believers.

That is why the Lord has given me a passion to write. I write for God’s glory and not my own.

I want to write so God can be blessed; that others will spend more time thinking of and talking about Jesus; and that together we will grow closer to Him.

What does that mean for me?

  • I need to study more
  • I need to read more
  • I need to stop fixating on the how it will work but instead focus on the what does He want me to say.

Here is another passage He showed me:

“And in Him you too are being built TOGETHER to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit” (Ephesians 2:22, NIV).

If we go back to Acts – when the disciples met they would discuss, learn, and question God.

They “met together to discuss important issues” (Acts 15:6, NRSV).

I know that as I read other blogs and meet other believers my faith grow stronger. And now that I know that making a community where we can grow in togetherness is God’s plan for me, I will continue to press on in writing, reading, studying, praying and meditating.

“Christianity is a personal, practical and progressive relationship with Almighty God” ~ Henry Blackaby, Experiencing God.   Click to Tweet

If God can be practical in helping me build a relationship with Him, I can be practical in bridging the immensity of the world, the difference in race, culture, and age – and build a strong togetherness in Christ – right here on the Internet.

WEDNESDAY’S WORD – Trust

Wednesday’s Word – Trust

In Wednesday’s Word I hope that we can spread His Word around the world one word at a time. Please link below with your thoughts from God. Or leave them in the comment section with your link.

There are times my mind screams why God? Then in the next instant He shows me – why.

This past week a friend lost her husband suddenly. All of this seemed unreal. My husband and I had just met them. We were planning on getting together again but plans kept changing and then poof – he was gone.

But what I did see was God in action – in a family of faith. Continue reading

WEDNESDAY’S WORD – Begin

Wednesday’s Word – Begin

Wednesday's-Word

I am beginning a new idea here on He Cares for You. I have added a Linky Tool at the bottom of this post. We’ll see what happens.

This week my word from God is BEGIN.

When we were born in the Spirit we began a new life. But did you know this isn’t a one time occurrence?

“Being born again from above is an enduring, perpetual, and eternal beginning.”

Are you being surprised every day? Are you being renewed every morning?

Begin afresh every day.

A number of years ago my first acronym in my walk with Christ was SMILE.

S – See
M – More
I – In
L – Life
E – Every day
