Can a dress change the world

Cold outside? You can wear a dress – just layer up.

The more I write, the more I read, the more I watch about human trafficking, the more committed I become to do something about it.

I am still wearing a dress for December so I can ask, “Can a dress change the world?”

Thank you to all those who have commented, prayed and donated to Ratanak International. Thanks for your caring and sharing. I will be extending my pledge to match up to $500 given to Ratanak through my page (or by cheque with my name in the subject line) and my offer to give $5.00 to Ratanak for every Tadeo Turtle sold. I will extend both of these until mid January.

If you are finished with turkey, and gifts, and family – please consider looking into my Ratanak page. My heart is broken to know that this travesty goes on in this 21st Century. I thought all that ended with the abolition of slavery. I was wrong – very wrong.

Please become aware. Listen to others and if you think a person may be in an abusive relationship – listen to them. Pray for them. Get them help.

Look for where God is leading you. Don’t turn away because it isn’t nice, it isn’t pretty. Go where God wants you to go. Be aware. Be there. Share this information with a friend, a co-worker.

Here are some notable videos and links about #humantrafficking and Ratanak.

A tour of the RAP home – the Ratanak Achievement Home.

Since 2012, the Ratanak Achievement Program (RAP) has been committed to equipping survivors of exploitation with vocational and life skills training, empowering them to pursue their dreams and live independently. This RAP Community Home is where they learn, where they experience care and love, and where they continue their journey of healing.

Brian McConaghy, founder of Ratanak, talks on 100 Huntley Street about chatting to the girls who were rescued from #sextrafficking in Cambodia by Ratanak International.

Christ heals.

“These girls get Christ. … They can relate to Him. … No one can take Jesus away from these girls.”

Janis Playing in a dress

What a unique December! When we went home to visit our family for an early Christmas celebration I continued to wear a dress every day –

because I believe “A Dress Can Change the World”.

Yes even in winter with a dress, with pants underneath or tights, boots, hats and coat I was able to walk around the neighbourhood.

It can be done! Wear a dress even in winter.

Has anyone decided to join me in wearing a dress for the last week of December? Please add your name in the comments. Or if you know of others doing this, tell me.

I am pleased to say that I have started to see some donations come in. Thank you. Thank you. I am matching up to $500 all donations to Ratanak International. You can pay online or send a cheque – just click on Ratanak Janis Cox to access the information.

This has been an interesting exercise. I have met people, talked to them and discussed human trafficking.

I want to spread the word.

Let’s be aware. Let’s not judge. There is more here than we can know. The Star has an excellent article. Check it out.

Scripture and a Picture – How to be Free

Scripture and a Picture – How to be Free

John 3:5

I have been painting into my Bible for the past few weeks. I am finding that as I do that I really remember the scripture I am studying. I bought some Bibles at the local thrift store, so I have many to choose from.

Now I am trying to frame the verse before I paint, in order to be able to check the verse for the picture.

As I started to paint John 3:5 it felt like the Lord was pressing upon me the availability of His Spirit. Every week we seem to be focusing either on the UNSEEN, or the Spirit of God.

Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no-one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.

The first thing I noted are the words from Jesus, ” I tell you the truth”. Jesus says that phrase may times in His Word. The truth is what He came to teach us because

The truth will set us free.

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32, NIVUK).

I listened to a program on Huntley Street the other day. They were interviewing Brian McConaghy. He said that when they found these young girls in Cambodia, some as young as 5 years of age who had suffered in the sex trade, that he did not hold out much hope for their rehabilitation.

However, through the power of Christ these young girls are now confident faith-filled women.

Here is the page with the interview. I urge to watch it.

  Cambodia Cries Out

That’s amazing to me – that they could endure such abuse, and still be able to put it behind them and live joyful lives.

That’s what Christ can give us – an inexpressible and glorious joy, for we are receiving the goal of our faith, the salvation of our souls. (based on 1 Peter 1:8-9).

Peace, contentment, and joy through ALL situations.

That is something to remember.

We are born of water and the Spirit.

Now we are free.

Prayer:

Oh Heavenly Father, I struggle to understand what happens to these girls. I struggle to understand how anyone could do what they do to abuse them. I just plain struggle. I feel overwhelmed and very insignificant. Please help me to help them. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Monday Musings – Can a Dress Change the World?

tap dance dress

It’s been quite the two weeks – I love to talk to people as I walk around the lake. Our dog, Snowball, makes it easy to start to chat. Lately I have been asking them, “Do you want to know why I am wearing a dress?” It is most interesting that very few have ever thought about human trafficking.

I am advocating for Ratanak International by wearing a dress every day in December.

Let’s Make Double Double!

Can you help? I will match every dollar up to $500. And for the month of December Ratanak also has a sponsor that will double all gifts up to $45 000. Check out their Facebook Page. This is double double.

I do believe we can change the world if we may more people aware of this travesty. Will you help me? Will you spread the word? On Twitter, on Facebook – through word of mouth?

Let’s get the word out – this is happening! How can we help? It seems like an insurmountable task. But it is possible. Let’s make this a world-wide movement.

Let’s spread LOVE not hate.

Let’s spread DIGNITY and not abuse.

Let’s spread FREEDOM and not slavery.

My dress for tap dance came from a friend. What a welcome present!.

I also am offering to give to Ratanak $5.00 for every Tadeo Turtle that I sell in December.

Word of God Speak – How can we find Freedom?

Word of God Speak – How can we find Freedom?

Can you believe this is the 6th week since I started Word of God Speak? We have looked at 6 different verses – prayed, studied, memorized and hopefully put them into our hearts.

Week One – Luke 11:28Blessed rather are those.
Week Two – Hebrews 4:12
Hebrews-4-12
Week Three – Isaiah 40:8Isaiah-40-8
Week Four – 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

2Corinthians-17-and-father-of-lights

Last week we looked at 1 Peter 1:8-9. Can I Catch the Spirit and Run for the Goal?Can-I-catch-the-Holy-Spirit-and-Run-for-the-Goal-

Here is my attempt at memory work without prompts for 1 Peter 1:8-9.

Though we you have not seen Him, we you love Him; and even though we you do not see Him NOW, we you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for we you are receiving the goal of our your faith, the salvation of our your souls.

As you can see I need to remember “you” and the word NOW. But otherwise I am getting the grasp of it.

On to today’s verse:

Are-You-Unleashing-the-Power-of-the-Holy-Spirit

This picture painted in December 2013.

S – Say the Scripture out loud:

Today we are looking at 2 Corinthians 3:17

Now the Lord is Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

And a quick look at The Message:

And when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We’re free of it! All of us! Nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face.

I – Interpretations, footnotes, history:

Paul has been discussing the old covenant versus the new covenant in Christ. The old covenant relied on rules; the new covenant relies on the heart.

Look at 2 Corinthians 3:3-6 HCSB

It is clear that you are Christ’s letter, produced by us, not written with ink but with the Spirit of the living God—not on stone tablets but on tablets that are hearts of flesh.

We have this kind of confidence toward God through Christ.  It is not that we are competent in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our competence is from God.  He has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit produces life.

In my study Bible NIV, it says that the old covenant was temporary and inadequate and the new covenant was permanent and effective.

John 8:32 says:

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

M – Make a list of thoughts, ideas, questions:

Freedom! I love the praise songs about the freedom in Christ. It reminded me of one of my favourite songs from Canada.

Robin Mark singing Take us to the River – The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon us.

It is such a privilege to be in Christ and be FREE. There is nothing holding us back from doing His Will except us. We are our own problem. Each of us has something that could hold us back. But we are in a community where we can help each other.

I remember the shampoo commercial that says you tell one friend and she tells one friend and you can see the multiplication factor.

Let’s be a community that helps one another. Let’s back each other as much as we can through every method we can use.

All tides rise when we see a believer making this world a better place with their gifts. – Lysa Terkeurst.

P – Prayer: Take time to listen to what God says after pouring out your thoughts and questions

When you do this part – please take time to listen to God. Stop thinking, planning. Let your mind rest on Jesus. Focus on Him.

L – Life Application – What did I learn from this quiet time with God?

This past week and during this quiet time of reflection God spoke to me about something I had read about in Facebook about wearing a dress in December. It is a unique initiative to bring awareness of the huge problem of human trafficking in this world. As I prayed I thought of the freedom of Christ and those others who have gone before us to banish slavery.

I wrote about how I wanted to get involved and wear a dress.in December. I now have a fundraising page at Ratanak International Janis Cox.

And I have started a promotion for giving $5.00 of every Tadeo Turtle book sold, to Ratanak International who works with victims of sex trafficking in Cambodia.

There is a small town near our small town of Haliburton called Wilberforce. It is named after William Wilberforce, who had an integral part in helping to pull down the chains of slavery.

I saw revival. I felt revival. I sensed revival.

Yes let’s look to the UNSEEN.

Let’s find INEXPRESSIBLE and GLORIOUS joy.

Let’s shine so others will question us to learn why we feel such joy.

E – Exit with a prayer

Heavenly Father, thanks for Your Presence with us and in us. Thanks for Your Word that says we can have the Spirit of God in us and be in freedom. Help us to “shine with the brightness of [your] face.” In Jesus’ name. Amen

Monday Musings – Can a Dress Change the World?

Monday Musings – Can a Dress Change the World?

It’s amazing to me how God leads me in a different direction sometimes. On Facebook I saw a post about DRESSember. Curious I followed the post. This is what I found out:

Can a dress change the world?

Dress Ratanak Janis Cox

That is the question.

The challenge is to wear a dress every day in December to bring awareness about sex trafficking around the world.

After hearing all the talk about wearing dresses to raise awareness about human trafficking I decided to do it too.

Tomorrow is day 1.

I think I am ready. I am a pants girl. So this will be a challenge. But coupled with skirts and pants over dresses I think I can do this.

I remember when I attended school and university that we had to wear dresses, even in snowstorms in Toronto. I had high boots, but cold knees. We didn’t have fashionable tights or leggings.

I am going to donate to Ratanak International,. I learned about this organization when Kelita Haverland came to be a speaker at our Women’s Day Together a few years ago. And I am Canadian and this is a Canadian charity. But it has a US affiliate so you can donate there if you are American.

However and whatever happens it is opening my eyes to prayer for those who are caught in this human trafficking evil. Please pray with me for the month of December (and beyond).

If you want to join me, email me at Janis and I will give you the scoop (as far as I know it).

I will be posting updates and pictures on my Facebook Page – AuthorJanisCox. And will update my progress next Monday.

I am joining with Ratanak International to support their work. See more on my Facebook Page as I figure this out.

Here is my Ratanak Page.

Also I have decided to give $5.00 for each Tadeo Turtle (my children’s book) sold during the month of December. Please see How Tadeo Wants to help Fight Against Human Trafficking.

Blessings,

Prayer:

Lord, please help all of us to be faithful in prayer for everything that you bring to our attention. Today I am praying for all those affected by the evils of human trafficking and I am asking for wisdom and abundance for those who work to fight against this evil and help those who are hurt by it. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
