Heart Message Two

Heart Message Two

Last week I told you what had been on my heart since publishing The Kingdom of Thrim. This week I have written about another heart message.

Heart message

What’s on your heart? Does God give you heart messages? He certainly does talk to us. Last week I told you one heart message. This week is number 2.

Today I want to tell what has been on our hearts (my hubby and myself) for about 4 years. While in Arizona 4 years ago, my hubby read an article in the Arizona Republic newspaper about a charity that helped single moms get an education and become a contributor to society, as well as becoming healthy (mentally, physically and nutritionally), learning about money and studying basic parenting skills. It is called Helping Hands for Single Moms.

After much research we decided to approach CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) to get a charity license. With effort and patience we registered Haliburton Assistance for Single Parents, known as HASP. We established a Board and we began to seek clients. Unlike the program in Arizona, our charity’s focus helps single parents (not just moms).

But, progress was very slow. Much prayer and patience ensued. Then 2 years ago we had our first application. A young mom of 2 desperately needed assistance. She was attending a college in North Bay on line but was having trouble meeting payments  for her rent, her utilities and her food. She had also maxed out her credit card as well she owed money to others. Winter had arrived and she needed wood to fill the stove.

Since she joining HASP, she has finished her schooling with a diploma in Recreation Therapy, obtained a job and become very good at watching how she spends her dollars. She has paid off all debt except for her student loan and car which she is paying off now. She is saving for a house as well. We are extremely proud of her accomplishments.

heart message

I love how God gave us this heart message.

This fall we had our second client – a middle-aged man with kids who needed help to obtain a skilled trade license. He starts his program soon.

We are thrilled the way God has worked through our Board, helping each of us learn new skills, watching great accomplishments of our clients and praying for our next client.

Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4, NIV).

If you are interested in helping HASP, you can find our website here.  We are a registered Canadian charity. Donations can be made by mail or through Canada Helps. See the HASP website for more details.

Monday Musings – Can a dress change the world?

Monday Musings – Can a dress change the world?

Janis Playing in a dress

What a unique December! When we went home to visit our family for an early Christmas celebration I continued to wear a dress every day –

because I believe “A Dress Can Change the World”.

Yes even in winter with a dress, with pants underneath or tights, boots, hats and coat I was able to walk around the neighbourhood.

It can be done! Wear a dress even in winter.

Has anyone decided to join me in wearing a dress for the last week of December? Please add your name in the comments. Or if you know of others doing this, tell me.

I am pleased to say that I have started to see some donations come in. Thank you. Thank you. I am matching up to $500 all donations to Ratanak International. You can pay online or send a cheque – just click on Ratanak Janis Cox to access the information.

This has been an interesting exercise. I have met people, talked to them and discussed human trafficking.

I want to spread the word.

Let’s be aware. Let’s not judge. There is more here than we can know. The Star has an excellent article. Check it out.

Watch this interview with the founder, Brian McConaghy, of Ratanak International. Cambodia cries out.

Monday Musings – Can a Dress Change the World?

tap dance dress

It’s been quite the two weeks – I love to talk to people as I walk around the lake. Our dog, Snowball, makes it easy to start to chat. Lately I have been asking them, “Do you want to know why I am wearing a dress?” It is most interesting that very few have ever thought about human trafficking.

I am advocating for Ratanak International by wearing a dress every day in December.

Let’s Make Double Double!

Can you help? I will match every dollar up to $500. And for the month of December Ratanak also has a sponsor that will double all gifts up to $45 000. Check out their Facebook Page. This is double double.

I do believe we can change the world if we may more people aware of this travesty. Will you help me? Will you spread the word? On Twitter, on Facebook – through word of mouth?

Let’s get the word out – this is happening! How can we help? It seems like an insurmountable task. But it is possible. Let’s make this a world-wide movement.

Let’s spread LOVE not hate.

Let’s spread DIGNITY and not abuse.

Let’s spread FREEDOM and not slavery.

My dress for tap dance came from a friend. What a welcome present!.

I also am offering to give to Ratanak $5.00 for every Tadeo Turtle that I sell in December.

Creative Tuesdays – What Does a Stamp tell us?

Creative Tuesdays – What Does a Stamp tell us?

What-does-a-stamp-tell-us

Our prompt from Creative Tuesdays this week is “Stamps”. I thought a lot about stamps this past week.

I realize they can say much about our civilization. What goes on a stamp? Almost anything. But here are some notable ones: kings, queens, heads of state, important events, important figures, historical figures, causes, art. Each country has different stamps. I used to collect stamps as a kid. But you know I never really knew what they stood for or why I collected them. No one explained the meaning behind them or the countries they represented.

We collect stamps at our church. They go to the Canadian Bible Society.

  • The revenue generated from the stamps allow CBS to purchase Bibles for Canadian prison ministry.
  • 10 lbs of stamps = approx 5 Bibles for distribution

Today I thought I would look at the world over the past 2000 years. One thing has remained the same: the poor are still with us just as Jesus said they would be.

Jesus said: “The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me (Matthew 26:11, NIV).”

We know that to live we need at least these four basics:

Food, Shelter, Clothing and Transportation

In our small town our food bank looks after those who are in need for nourishment,  clothing, health, and fuel for winter months.  Transportation in our town necessitates a vehicle or a friend with a vehicle. The county has tried different methods to alleviate the problem, but our wide area hampers this. Our town is definitely short of affordable housing. We are working on that too.

What is HASP?

In 2014 God put a burden on my husband’s heart for single parents in our town. He wanted to do more than send them to the foodbank. He wanted to help them get out of their cycle of poverty. In 2014 HASP, Haliburton Assistance for Single Parents, became a charity. HASP aims to help single parents continue past high school in order to increase their chances of getting a good job.

Our aim is to break the cycle of poverty whereby single parents, at a very young age, simply accept a life of living on social assistance programs or low paying jobs. We want to improve their economic status by enhancing their marketable skills through educational opportunities. We want to remove the obstacles that keep someone out of the classroom.

If you are interested in helping us with this charity or if you want information of how to start your own charity for single parents, please email HASP. Check out our website – HASP – Haliburton Assistance for Single Parents.

My artwork for the stamps comes from my thinking of the past 2000 years. If a stamp had been printed in Jerusalem would it look like this one?

Jerusalem-stamp

And if we were to look at our world today and made a stamp for The World would it look like this one?
