Creative Saturdays – Tadeo Turtle with Paper and Glue

Creative Saturdays – Tadeo Turtle with Paper and Glue

Today I used very simple materials to create an interesting picture.

PG-Finished

Materials

  • Scrapbook papers
  • Glue (I used Mod Podge)
  • Scissors
  • Paper (I used watercolour paper)
  • A permanent marker

Instructions

Decide on your subject. I decided to create Tadeo in a background of bushes and water.

Cut up the paper into squares, triangles, odd shapes. I used the long rectangles for trees, bushes; a long piece for the log, and the small pieces for the water.

Draw an outline of where you object will be. If I were to do this again I would start with the background and then put my turtle on at the end. But I didn’t so I worked the background around the turtle.

Put the glue on the paper in the area you will be working. Place the paper and cover with glue. Continue on for each piece.

PG-beginning

My fingers did get quite sticky with the glue but it was so much fun.

When I search for stained glass for kids I always found the craft uses Clear Contact Paper.  I went shopping and thought I had bought clear but it turns out it is grey. Not good.

But I decided to try my own version of this craft and instead of using contact paper I used clear plastic wrap and glue.
SG-finished-

Materials:

      • clear plastic wrap (for wrapping gift baskets)
      • coloured tissue paper
      • construction paper
      • scissors
      • white glue or Podge

Instructions:

Cut the tissue into squares or any shape the child can cut. Make a pile of the different colours.

SG-tissue-paper-cut

Put the clear plastic on a piece of construction paper (the better to see what you are doing and holds the plastic in place.

Cover a large area of the plastic with glue.

SG-glue-the-plastic-

Start putting the tissue pieces on the glued area. Overlapping is fine. Cover with more glue.

Fill the entire area where you think you will cut out your figure (I am using a turtle).

SG-glue-all-over-the-tissue-paper

Wait for it to dry or hurry it along with a hair dryer.

Sg-glue-the-tissue-paper

Draw  the turtle and cut him out.

Draw around the piece on the construction paper.

Cut inside the turtle so that you have a turtle frame. Put glue around the edge and paste the stained glass to the frame.

Creative Saturdays – A little Christmas Angel Craft

Creative Saturdays – A little Christmas Angel Craft

I went to Bible Study with the Bible Babes, yup that is what we call ourselves. The hostess had made beautiful little angels as gifts. Here is the gift she gave me.
CA-friend's-angel

So I thought I would try a kids’ version of this craft using supplies I had around the house.

Materials:

      • Wool, moss, or anything to make hair
      • styrofoam ball, wooden ball (for head)
      • material (cut into a circle)
      • egg carton (1 section cut out); small ceramic pot – for the base
      • marker, paints,
      • trim for halo, or pipe cleaner
      • cut out wings.. from whatever you have

Instructions:

Cut the material to make a circle. The size is about a 5 inch diameter

Paint the face.

Put on the hair. I could find no wool, no moss. So I opted for …. oatmeal. Yes I painted the oatmeal brown and let it dry. Then I pasted the browned oatmeal to her head.

CA-glue-on-head-for-hair

CA-add-the-hair

Now glue the material on to the egg carton section (or pot). I actually used 2 egg carton sections to make it high enough for the skirt.

Glue the head onto the body.

CA-add-head

I put a ribbon around her neck. You could add earrings, a bow, a pendant, button.

Add the halo.

Add the wings.

I would let the kids use their imaginations totally on this. I can see very decorative angels with lots of spunk. Send me your kids’ pictures if you use this craft.

Don’t forget to send me your child’s pictures. Send them to Janis Cox and I will put them up in the Children’s Gallery.

Creative Saturdays – Sponge Painting – Tadeo Turtle

Creative Saturdays – Sponge Painting – Tadeo Turtle

There is a linky below in which to link your creative kids ideas or your kids’ pictures or crafts. Let’s build a creative kids’ community.

SP-Sponge-Painting-Final-Tadeo-Turtle

I know that we can use sponges to paint around shapes and make a picture. But today I thought I would use sponge painting for a background to a picture. I used the flat side, the edges and even squeezed out the paint.

Kids love sponges. The best ones of course are the sea sponges – they have lots of texture. This time I used the regular sponges – cut in small pieces. I used the three primary colours – each one in a separate container. That way you won’t make “mud”.

SP-paints-and-sponge

Here are a couple of beginning pictures of the process.

In this one I started to squeeze out the paint and use the edges.

Creative Saturdays – Blowing Watercolour

Once again I am adding a linky on the bottom of the post. If you have creative ideas for children please link below. No recipes. Just artwork please.

Creative Saturdays – Blowing Watercolour

This week at my art lesson we were shown a technique for getting interesting lines in watercolour. It is a very simple method – one blows the paint around.

BW-Blow-Watercolour

Materials:

  • Paints
  • Brushes
  • Watercolour Paper

Instructions:

Wet the paper using a spray bottle. Don’t wet everywhere.

BW-spray-bottle

Mix the paint so that it is of a milky consistency – not too thin.

Drop the paint into the water puddles. You can add different colours.

Then get down really close to the painting and start to blow. Blow in all directions.

BW-first-step

BW-Blow-first-colours BW-blowing BW-final-blowing
You can also use your finger tip wet with water and move the paint around a little if you would like more variety.

Wait for the paint to dry.

Then you can add your picture. Or just leave it as a lovely abstract. Sometimes you will be able to find shapes and make a picture from that.

Or you can draw a picture first; then cover it with paper towel while you drop paint and blow around it.

Have fun and experiment.

Don’t forget to send me your child’s pictures. Send them to Janis Cox and I will put them up in the Children’s Gallery.

Creative Saturdays – Mixed Media Tadeo Turtle

Today I am going to add a linky at the bottom of this post. If you have art ideas for kids please link your post. Please only link kid friendly art ideas – no recipes (unless a specific recipe for children to make) or adult crafts. I will have to remove anything that does not follow this rule.

Creative Saturdays – Mixed Media Tadeo Turtle

This week we moved to our winter residence in Arizona. I found a few minutes to have fun – real fun. I found some scrapbooking papers that I had picked up at a garage sale and wondered what I could do with them.

This is what turned out.

MM-finished

Materials:

      • papers – all sorts
      • scissors
      • watercolour paper
      • paints and brushes
      • salt
      • podge or white glue

Instructions:

Decide on your animals, fish or plants. Cut out from the papers. I decided on Tadeo and made three of them.

MM-the-scrapbooking-paper

Put your pieces together to make your figures.

MM-cutting-out-my-turtles

On the watercolour paper apply water using a brush or spray bottle. Drop colours onto the wet paper. Sprinkle salt.

MM-applying-the-background-paint

Let dry.

Decide on your pattern for the figures. I tried several placements before I was happy with the result.

MM-another-placement

MM-placing-turtles-2MM-placing-the-turtles

Now paste the figures onto the dried watercolour paper. Then paste over again all over the picture. This was fun.

MM-applying-podge

Wait until completely dry. I added more watercolour on top of the pasted paper. This turned out to be interesting as the colours were different and I saw shapes appear.

I added the eyes and toes with black marker. Additional details could be added to the picture as well.

MM-finished
