What is Taste and See? And Free?

Taste and See - volume 2

Taste and See and Free is an opportunity to get a free book of Christian authors’ books that you can decide whether you want to purchase them.

Just as we used to do in a bookstore – glance through the books and see if we want to buy them – this is your online chance to look through books before you buy.

Late last year I joined a group called John 3:16 Network, run by Lorilyn Roberts. On Twitter the hashtag is #john316books.

At the end of the year I was privileged to enter Tadeo Turtle, my children’s book for ages 2-7, into the second volume of Taste and See – a compilation of over 30 authors and their books. You get to have a taste and see of the book before you buy it.

There are links to each of the author’s books in the Taste and See volume.

You can download the book for free here:

Please enjoy this wonderful look at Christian authors and their books.

A Great Review for Tadeo Turtle

A Great Review for Tadeo Turtle

by Janis Van Keuren (@HeartFulMoments)

Here is a portion of her review. Please read the rest at Heart-filled Moments. Thank you very much Janis from your new friend Janis.

Tadeo Turtle - Written and Illustrated by Janis Cox

Tadeo Turtle – Written and Illustrated by Janis Cox

Vibrant. Creative. Artistic. Hospitable. Friendly. A passionate lover of Jesus and prayer. All describe Author Janis Cox. We had met online through Janis’ popular blog, “Sunday Stillness,” but when the opportunity presented itself to meet at a writer’s conference in Phoenix, we both jumped at the chance. And how could I pass up meeting someone who spells her name the same unusual way that my Mom decided to spell my name?

In addition, Janis offered for me to stay the night at her home even though I was a perfect stranger. She was sparing me a grueling two-hour drive home and back again the next morning. I gratefully accepted. Canadian born, Janis and her husband Wayne winter in Arizona. “Snowbirds.” That’s what us folks who live here through the sweltering summers like to call our winter visitors. We really envy them.

Janis’ book, “Tadeo Turtle,” is about an animal who enjoys his life until he discovers that one of his friends has adventures impossible for Tadeo to experience because of the way he was made. Like most of us humans, Tadeo begins examining what the possibilities of life would be like if he could just change. And isn’t that what most of us are thinking about with the start of a New Year. We look within ourselves, finding flaws, and then determining how we can change to improve ourselves.

 A Little Bit about Janis

Janis Van Keuren

I am follower of Christ and a freelance writer with a heart to encourage and inspire other Christian women. I am married to Hubby–crazy, loving, and easy-going. We have two zany, sports-loving sons who are young men forging their futures in this world. They think their Mom’s latest adventure is quite amusing but they are always beside me to help me through the “techy” stuff..

I have dappled in various careers from writing to teaching to banking. But the one that has attracted me the most is writing. With a degree in Journalism, I had worked several years as a writer and editor for major company publications. Then I heard the Lord’s call to come home and be a full-time Wife and Mother.

My blog is designed to encourage and inspire other Christian women with experiences from my personal life and Scripture verses that correlate. I enjoy writing from my heart about the ways I have experienced the lord’s presence in my life, hoping to help others find Him right by their side as well. Sprinkled throughout my blog are anecdotes, family stories, amusing moments with our dog, Chip, and relational issues to name just a few. Blogging helps me to network with other Christian women and share our experiences, our goals, our visions. As a writer, I hope to inspire other Christian women on this earthly journey with the Lord.

Creative Saturdays – Tadeo Turtle with Paper and Glue

Creative Saturdays – Tadeo Turtle with Paper and Glue

Today I used very simple materials to create an interesting picture.

PG-Finished

Materials

  • Scrapbook papers
  • Glue (I used Mod Podge)
  • Scissors
  • Paper (I used watercolour paper)
  • A permanent marker

Instructions

Decide on your subject. I decided to create Tadeo in a background of bushes and water.

Cut up the paper into squares, triangles, odd shapes. I used the long rectangles for trees, bushes; a long piece for the log, and the small pieces for the water.

Draw an outline of where you object will be. If I were to do this again I would start with the background and then put my turtle on at the end. But I didn’t so I worked the background around the turtle.

Put the glue on the paper in the area you will be working. Place the paper and cover with glue. Continue on for each piece.

PG-beginning

My fingers did get quite sticky with the glue but it was so much fun.

Tadeo, pronounced TAHD-ay-OH, comes from the name Thaddeus, which means “heart” or “praise.”

Tadeo befriends an energetic squirrel and longs to be able to run and climb like his friend.

In a dream, Tadeo loses his shell and enjoys his new freedom–until a large hungry cat appears and mistakes Tadeo for a rat. Will Tadeo escape unharmed? When Tadeo awakes from his dream, his response proves he is aptly named.

Tadeo Turtle won the Best Children’s Book for 2013 by The Word Awards in Canada.

Creative Saturdays – Mixed Media Tadeo Turtle

This week we moved to our winter residence in Arizona. I found a few minutes to have fun – real fun. I found some scrapbooking papers that I had picked up at a garage sale and wondered what I could do with them.

This is what turned out.

MM-finished

Materials:

      • papers – all sorts
      • scissors
      • watercolour paper
      • paints and brushes
      • salt
      • podge or white glue

Instructions:

Decide on your animals, fish or plants. Cut out from the papers. I decided on Tadeo and made three of them.

MM-the-scrapbooking-paper

Put your pieces together to make your figures.

MM-cutting-out-my-turtles

On the watercolour paper apply water using a brush or spray bottle. Drop colours onto the wet paper. Sprinkle salt.

MM-applying-the-background-paint

Let dry.

Decide on your pattern for the figures. I tried several placements before I was happy with the result.

MM-another-placement

MM-placing-turtles-2MM-placing-the-turtles

Now paste the figures onto the dried watercolour paper. Then paste over again all over the picture. This was fun.

MM-applying-podge

Wait until completely dry. I added more watercolour on top of the pasted paper. This turned out to be interesting as the colours were different and I saw shapes appear.

I added the eyes and toes with black marker. Additional details could be added to the picture as well.

MM-finished

Don’t forget to send me your child’s pictures. Send them to Janis Cox and I will put them up in the Children’s Gallery.

Children Christian Authors – a Review of Tadeo Turtle

Children Christian Authors – A Review of Tadeo Turtle

A big thanks to Diane Stortz for asking to review my children’s book, Tadeo Turtle. Yippee. Diane gave it 5 Stars!

Tadeo turtle

Tadeo – It’s Me!

Some of her words:

Editors of Christian children’s books often see manuscripts similar to Tadeo Turtle. A young character wishes to be different in some way, faces an obstacle, and then decides he is happy with the way God made him after all. Because the plot is so common, most of these manuscripts don’t get published.

But in Tadeo Turtle, author and illustrator Janis Cox presents a well-put-together package of text, art, and extra activities that make the familiar plot line worth a look–and garnered the award for best children’s book at the the 2013 Word Awards Gala in Mississauga, Ontario, in a competition sponsored by The Word Guild, an association for Canadian Christian writers.

You can read the rest of the review at Christian Children’s Authors. There are other wonderful Christian authors both writing and blogging on this site. Please visit.

To find out more about Tadeo and how to order please visit Tadeo’s Page.

Or you can purchase one from me right now by clicking on the Paypal icon. You will be directed to either use a credit card or paypal. I will sign the book as well. Price is $13.00 and $2.50 for shipping and handling.

Creative Saturdays – Stencil Turtles

This is an update of an older post. But I loved making the stencil turtles.

Creative Saturdays – Stencil Tadeo Turtle

A few posts ago I showed how to use plastic wrap to make a background. But today I have cut out the shapes of 3 different turtles and then made the background. After that I outlined the turtles and painted each one.

stencil turtles

Materials:

      • Watercolour paper (is best)
      • Paints (watercolour or tempera)
      • Brushes (one fat, one skinny)
      • Plastic Wrap
      • Card Stock Paper
      • Scissors
      • Tape

Instructions:

Check out pictures of your subject – this time I did different turtles (not a painted turtle).

Here is a great page of images for turtles.

Draw the outline of your subjects. No detail necessary.

Cut out the shapes.

Tape them to the watercolour paper. Mine are similar to an eastern box turtle, a Florida box turtle and a sea turtle. I say similar because when you paint them you can let your imagination take over.

stencil turtles

Take a large brush filled with water and with the brush cover all the spots where the shapes are not.

While the paper is still wet – drop lots of colour into the paper. The more colour the more vibrant the background. Use only the primary colours – and they will mix on the paper.

stencil turtles

While still wet scrunch up pieces of plastic wrap and place all over the page. I keep a jar of plastic wrap I have used before. You can use it again and again.

stencil turtles

Cover with heavy books. WAIT. WAIT. WAIT. This is the hardest part.

When you peel off the saran if the paper is still wet use a hair dryer to make sure it is perfectly dry.

stencil turtles

stencil turtles

Take a marker and draw around each shape.

stencil turtles

Paint each shape with the details.

Creative Saturdays – Burnished Tadeo Turtle

Creative Saturdays – Burnished Tadeo Turtle

Trying something entirely different today. I found this interesting idea at:

Foil Drawings on ArtClub

Owls – Make It a Wonderful Life

BTT---finished

Materials:

  • White Glue (suggested tacky as it is heavier)
  • Cardboard
  • Q-tips
  • A simple drawing
  • Aluminum foil
  • Black shoe polish and polishing cloth

Instructions:

First find a simple picture. You can draw it out first on the cardboard. I did mine freehand as I have drawn Tadeo a number of times.

BTT-applying-the-glue

Go over the lines with the white glue. Make sure the bottle is easy to squeeze.

Wait for it to dry. This is the hardest part.

BTT-painting-the-picture-with-glue

Next take the piece of foil which is cut a little larger than the picture and with a glue stick put glue on the foil. Now place the foil over your picture and wrap around to the back.

BTT---glue-on-the-foil

BTT---cover-with-foil

Carefully, using a soft cloth or paper towel, start to press the foil to the cardboard.

BTT-rub-with-soft-cloth

Next using a Q-Tip go closer to the shapes. Pressing down carefully.

Finally with a dull pencil go into the areas closer. You can add extra lines at this point.

BTT---using-q-tip-and-dull-pencil

Now with the black shoe polish gently rub over the entire creation. Wait for it to dry. Polish carefully. I only had black shoe polish in a tin so it was harder to put on and very hard to polish off. Also the smell was awful. I believe they have water based shoe polish that would work better and be much safer.

BTT-putting-on-polish

Voila – a unique picture.

BTT---finished
