Sunday Stillness – Another look at REST

REST2for-web

As I have been working at finding time to spend with God another acronym came to me for REST. Are we sitting and thanking Him for all the little things in our lives? Do we look around and see the things we can be thankful for? Are we aware of our surroundings?

So I started another grateful journal. A friend of mine opened my eyes again to see that each moment of the day we can speak a prayer of thanks to Him Who watches over us.

Here are a few that came to me that day:

  • gentle breezes of summer for those hot summer days
  • fluffy white clouds that float in a blue sky (I even saw a little dog in one of the clouds)
  • all shades of green
  • my sweet dog sleeping on a pillow
  • a family who cares
  • a faithful husband who believes in the power of God
  • planting my own garden
  • a solid house (we are built on rock)

Check out all the Joy Dare posts about thankfulness.

Sunday Stillness – What is REST?

REST-for-web

This has been on my mind for some time. What is REST? Last Wednesday I found out. I think it means to spend some quality time with God.

R – Restore

E – Everything

S – Sit

T – Tight

I had trouble doing this the past few weeks. On Wednesday,  I still had trouble but had the time to persevere – until I heard that quiet voice with some answers. I loved Oswald Chambers from August 5.

A Christian is one who trusts the wits and the wisdom of God, and not his own wits (Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest, August 5)

If I am going to trust in His wits, then I have to be close to Him, listen to Him and follow His directions.

Sunday Stillness – A Joint Service in the Park

Sunday Stillness – A Joint Service in the Park

Joint-service-in-Park

Picture from freedigitalphotos.net

I am sure you are like me – so much to do during the summer, but all good. Between family visits, gardening, picking vegetables, boating, and walks, there isn’t much time for the computer. And that’s probably a good thing. We need to get out and enjoy this fantastic summer weather – it is brief here in Canada.

This Sunday all of our protestant churches in our small town will get together in the park for a Sizzlin’ Summer Service. This is our 8th season. Each of the pastors/ministers takes part – music, children’s story, message, and I can’t remember what else. Each church also has a job. We pray for good weather and as far as I can remember we have only been inside one year. We have five churches involved (as I said we live in a small town).

Praying that everyone is enjoying their times with family and friends in the out-of-doors.

Psalms 133:1  Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!

1 Corinthians 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.

This joint service with the churches might seem unusual to you but we are a part of the town family. I love this hymn “Part of the Family”. Let’s join together in unity and praise the Lord.

Sunday Stillness – How to Be Careful

Sunday Stillness – How to Be Careful

Be-careful---ladybug-web

Watercolour pencil and ink, Janis Cox 2015

The ladybug can teach us many things. Just the term “lady” reminds us to watch how we act, speak and think. How do we treat others? What comes out of our mouths? We know the term lady but here is a definition from a dictionary:

a woman who is refined, polite, and well-spoken:

And for the men reading this post – are you acting as gentlemen?

Here is a definition of gentleman:

a civilized, educated, sensitive, or well-mannered man:

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15, NIV).

Be careful, then, how you live
Be wise,
Be filled with the Spirit
Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs
Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.
Live as children of the light (selected passages from Ephesians 5).

Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it (Ephesians 5:, MSG).

Does this mean for women to act as ladies (Proverbs 31) and men to act as gentlemen?

I think so. What are your thoughts?

In February I signed up as a contributor for a new online radio station called Hope Stream Radio. I would love you to visit us and listen to some of the programming. I contribute each Tuesday and that podcast is usually repeated on Saturdays.

All of my podcasts can be found on the Hope Stream Radio site, under my name and my program name Growing Through God’s Word. I have also added this to my menu at the top of my page.

It has been a learning experience – learning new technology, learning to project my voice, to use expression, and to tell stories about myself.

Here is their Vision Statement:

HopeStreamRadio is a Christian Internet Radio Station that provides daily programming to English‑speaking Christians around the world to encourage them in their relationship with the Lord and inform them about the work God is doing around the world.

Here is one I did called The Holy Spirit Teaches Me. I hope you enjoy it.

Sunday Stillness – Choose Jesus

Sunday Stillness – Choose Jesus

Choose-Jesus

VBS 2015 – Choose Jesus

It has been a very busy week. My family were visiting and I led a Vacation Bible Camp at our church for the mornings. Needless to say I didn’t have time to reply to the wonderful comments from last Sunday. I did read them and thank you so much. This week it should – (I say should) – be easier to get stuff done.

At our Bible Camp the kids learned 5 important choices

Choose to Believe:
The Blind Man – John 9
Memory Verse – God sent His Son to be the Saviour of the world. (1 John 4:14)
Choose to Act:
The Ten Sick Men – Luke 17:11-19
Memory Verse – Let us love with actions (1john 3:18)
Choose to Forgive:
The Paralyzed Man – Mark 2:1-12
Memory Verse – God will forgive our sins. (1 John 1:9)
Choose to Obey:
The Rich Young Ruler – Luke 18:18-27
Memory Verse – I will obey Your commands. (Psalm 119:
Choose Jesus:
The Disciples – John 20:19-29
Memory Verse – Choose today who you will love and serve. (Joshua 24:15)

They did very well with the memory work. Our presentation on Friday for the parents was fantastic. The kids were terrific.

I bought my VBS from Gospel Light called SonWorld. It was the last one Amazon had and was out-of-date on their website. But it gave me the needed inspiration for stories, great pictures and flannel pictures too. I had to make up my own crafts (except one) as I didn’t find the crafts given to be useful for remembering the lessons.

These are lessons we all need to remember.

I caught a cold on the Wednesday but once again God carried me through. Amazing what strength we can get from Him.

Here is one of the songs they loved and sang at the end of our presentation. Let’s remember these words.

I’m Keeping my eyes on Jesus.

Sunday Stillness – God tells us to Sit Still

Sunday Stillness – God tells us to Sit Still

God-tells-us-to-sit-still

Photo from FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Lately I have been having a hard time settling into a quiet time with the Lord. Does that happen to you?

This morning I finally said, “SIT STILL, Jan.” And I did. I sat so still I fell asleep. But that’s not bad either. At least I stopped. I felt a stillness I haven’t felt in a while.

It reminded me of my first time trying to sit still. Really I couldn’t sit for more than 5 minutes. Now I could sit still but I always feel like there are other things pressing on my time.

Really? – other things more pressing than being with God, Himself?

Oh no. That’s not good.

I felt a peace and calmness that I haven’t reached for a while.

Lately have been reading, studying, and thinking. Praying, petitioning. I’ve had an active brain.

I recalled reading Ron Hughes’ terrific book, called Refresh.

refresh-promo

What’s been going on in my life Ron calls a “mental racket”.

My brain has played a rock concert for the past month.

At least now I know what I have been missing. I need to stop after praying and reading the Bible. I need to focus on Jesus. Get Still.

I must take that time – to quieten my thoughts before God.

Here is an acronym to help you and me to remember what being still and in God’s presence really means

PEACE

P – Put

E – Everything

A – Aside

C – Calm

E – Ensues

Take time with Jesus today. You will be glad you did.

I found this video to express exactly what I have been feeling. We sang it on Sunday.

The words in the second first really meant a lot to me:

Take time to be holy, the world rushes on
Spend much time in secret with Jesus alone.

Today is Sunday Stillness.

Last week my post was called Quiet Moments and I posted a picture of a deer. Here is my latest meeting with a deer. I hope you enjoy.

Sunday Stillness – If it looks good is it good for you?

Sunday Stillness – If it looks good is it good for you?

If-it-looks-good-is-it-good-for-you

Lately I have started reading Genesis. I read and read. When I see something that catches my attention I stop, and using my SIMPLE Bible Study Method, I work through the verse.

I read Genesis 3:5-6. The serpent tells Eve.

For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

Tempting isn’t it? Would you have been tempted? I think I would have.

We read her thoughts:

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. (My emphasis)

Before the serpent said this – she didn’t see him as evil. She only saw good. All was good in Eden. All animals ate plants. And this apple was pleasing to the eye. And she saw more than she needed. She saw it as desirable for gaining wisdom. Oh my do we see things that are desirable for getting better, being better.

In my Bible “gaining wisdom” is in italics. I am not sure why but it got my attention. We think learning is a good thing. Is that true?

I read 1 John 2:16.

For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.

So the desirableness of what seems good does not come from God – but from Satan.

I think I need to think about this more.

What do I do that seems good but really isn’t of God?

More time is needed for me to figure this out. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Sunday Stillness – Quiet Moments

Sunday Stillness – Quiet Moments

Quiet-Moments

A number of years ago (2006) I published my first devotional. I called it Quiet Moments,
published by The Upper Room Devotional.

In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation (Psalm 5:3 (NIV).

THE deer’s eyes stared into mine. She did not move except for a gentle twitch of her tail. We watched each other for a while. Then slowly and carefully she turned and walked away. I was captivated with her long, graceful legs and her gentle footsteps. Such beauty, in my own backyard!

I felt God’s presence then — the peace, the gentleness. That’s the way I feel when I talk to God in the quiet of the early morning. I wait, I listen; God comes. As I lay all my thoughts, ideas, worries, and desires before my Creator, God releases me from any anxiety I feel.

To read more follow Quiet Moments.  I encourage you to follow the link and continue reading my thoughts. Comments can be left on the Upper Room website or back here.

Sunday Stillness – Convicted of a Bad Habit

Sunday Stillness – Convicted of a Bad Habit

REAL Magnet

Lately I have been convicted again of getting sidetracked from the real purpose of my life. You can check back to my other conviction story. This time the conviction came slowly. I had realized for a long time that social media had become a stealer of my time, energy and ability to write and paint. But I didn’t want to let it go. I felt I needed it to expand and get known.

I don’t feel that way anymore. God is showing me that life is more about REAL connections – through my blog – and writing personal notes to my commenters. And through my life – REAL life where I meet and get to know the people in my town on a more personal level.

I must get back to being R.E.A.L.

I wrote the acronym a long time ago.

R- Release
E- Everything to God
A- AndL- Live

You can download a PDF for Magnet – REAL – Janis Cox.

Habits – I have found social media has become a habit instead of a tool. The final thing that has driven me to cut off this habit happened the other day. I had an appointment at my Naturopath’s. He told me that WiFi could be a potential harm to my system. As soon as I heard that I resolved to stay off my IPad as much as possible. Instead I work at my computer which has a CAT5 plug directly into the wall.

I also try to spend more time outdoors, in my vegetable garden. I love playing in the soil.

As I read Oswald Chambers (Oswald Chambers – May 12), these were my thoughts about habits:

Habits – Make sure your spiritual habits are about getting closer to God and not just checking it off the list. Be ready to break or change a habit if God shows you it is just that – a habit – and not a way of getting closer to Him.

I think that can be taken about any habit, spiritual or not. If it is not life-edifying then I need to drop it.

Now I will have time for more writing, time with friends, time with my husband, and time for painting. I am excited to see where God will lead me with this extra time.
