Word of God Speak – How to Focus on the Unseen

Word of God Speak – How to Focus on the Unseen

I have been thoroughly enjoying looking at a verse a week, finding ways to memorize it and thinking about what it means to my life.

The verses I have used so far are about what God’s Word is telling me about His Word. I thought since my blog is called Growing through God’s Word, and these posts are called Word of God Speak, I would focus first on those verses that tell us directly about His Word.

Last week’s verse was found at Isaiah 40:8.

The grass withers, and flowers fade, but the Word of our God stands for ever.

That’s a promise from God. Hallelujah. God is the only enduring reality in this world.

2-Corinthians-4-17-18

What is time? Temporary while we are here. Eternal with God.

This week I am looking at 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 – a longer passage, but I think it is important to learn it as a whole.

S – Say the Scripture out loud:

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far out weighs them. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

I also read the Scripture in other Bible versions. I liked the Good News in particular because it says that what can be seen only lasts for a TIME, and what cannot be seen lasts FOREVER.

And this small and temporary trouble we suffer will bring us a tremendous and eternal glory, much greater than the trouble.  For we fix our attention, not on things that are seen, but on things that are unseen. What can be seen lasts only for a time, but what cannot be seen lasts forever.

I – Interpretation. Using dictionaries, and footnotes and commentaries find out as much as you can about when, where, how and why this was written.

When I first read it I thought, “Oh my this carries on exactly after last week’s verse – the withering and fading of things in this life and the assurance of God’s Word being eternal.

Paul is talking about our temporary bodies – compared to our eternal ones. We are treasures in jars of clay. Sometimes I know that only too well. – Joints, and muscles can ache, I forget things, I get sick etc. etc.

Here are a few extra Scriptures to read:

Psalm 30:5 For his anger lasts only a moment,
    but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may stay for the night,
but rejoicing comes in the morning.

Romans 8:18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

1 Peter 1:6, 7 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.

2 Corinthians 5:7For we live by faith, not by sight.

Romans 8:24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?

Hebrews 11:1Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

I liked this commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh

We Christians have this treasure in earthen vessels. If we submit to God’s discipline—expending ourselves and yielding to God in the little things day by day—we will see our conviction grow. Then, if people call us into account, we will not be worried because we know absolutely—because we have lived it. This is the kind of faith God wants us to have.

M – Make a list of thoughts and questions.

I was taught to believe in what I saw – and told that what I saw was real. And not to look to the spiritual. Put your faith in concrete stuff. Thus, my imagination was curtailed. Science, math were triumphed. Literature was allowed – but creating fictional characters and thinking beyond what I could see and hear – that wasn’t encouraged. Even in university my courses in anthropology confused my faith. Sociology also didn’t help. And self-help books and authors only confused me more.

Now I have come full circle. Now I have actually heard things that some would say are not real.

I listen and watch for God to speak and show me His way.

I pray for circumstances to meet people and to help them. I’ve seen miracles, I’ve seen signs.

I believe in the Holy Spirit
I believe I can hear God’s Voice
I believe in Jesus, that He died, was resurrected and lives again
I believe He will come again
I believe in the Everlasting.

I know this world is but a vapour. Kingdoms rise and fall. But God’s Word will stand forever. I will NOT be shaken.

P – Prayer time. Don’t forget to LISTEN to God’s voice. Sometimes we chatter so much we forget to listen.

L – Life Application – what did I hear from God today?

I had a good long quiet time. I just love being still before the Lord. I have been reading AW Tozer and the attributes of God in his book, The Knowledge of the Holy.

I kept hearing assurances of God’s faithfulness.

Words came: He faileth not, great is Thy faithfulness, through summer and winter seasons.

Forever He is faithful, Forever He is strong, Forever He is with us, Forever and ever.

I’m fixing my eyes on Jesus. That’s what brings hope, strength, and passion for the day.

I will live with the UNSEEN.
I will be with God
I will hold fast to His Word
God does not change.

E – Exit with a prayer

To my unfailing, forever God, I will stand on Your Word. You are forever faithful. I will study. I will memorize your Word. I will put You first. I thank You for Your unendingness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Word of God Speak – Why I Can say “I will not be shaken”

Word of God Speak – Why I Can say “I will not be shaken”

I am so excited about learning Scripture. I hope you are too. This is week three of our new Word of God Speak.

Week One – Luke 11:28 – Hear the Word and Obey it

Week Two – Hebrews 4:12 – The Word of God – and 16 Scriptures for Reference

Can you fill in the blanks from last week? The answer is at the end of the post.

Hebrews ?:??

For the —- of —- is —— and —–. Sharper than any ————- it penetrates even to dividing —- and —–, —— and ——. It —— the thoughts and ——— of the heart.

Today using the SIMPLE Method of Bible Study we will study Isaiah 40:8

Isaiah-40-8

S – Say the passage out loud. This is very very important.

The grass withers and flowers fade, but the word of our God stands for ever (Isaiah 40:8, ESV).

I – Interpret the passage. What else can you find out?

I wrote before on Isaiah 40:8. I knew it sounded familiar.

And again in Bouquet from Creative Tuesdays.

And another one!! Flowers may Fade.

As I said this passage out loud, I remembered the praise song, I will not be Shaken by Vineyard.

The words from the song came to me – “The Word of the Lord will stand – I will not be shaken.” I  love that.

I will NOT be shaken.

Other references for you to look up:

Isaiah 5:24 – depicts dry grass, decayed roots – symbolizing those who reject God’s Word

James 1:10 says he will pass away like a wild flower

Psalm 119:89 – Your Word stands firm in the heavens

1 Peter 1:24-25 We are born again, imperishable – by God’s Word – This is the Word preached to us.

M – Make a list of thoughts, questions, ideas.

God has everything planned and timed. Things will pass away and change but He – The Lord – is imperishable, unending, all knowing, all powerful.

Yes “life goes on” – with God standing with us – with the living. Forever our Rock. I will not be shaken.

P- Prayer time. Take time to talk to God but also to LISTEN to Him

L – Life Application – What did I hear?

Grass withers but can come back after a rain storm. The living water of Christ revives us and gives us new life. It makes us part of the imperishable – the eternal. This takes the weight off my shoulders as I know He is in charge. We only need to listen to His voice and obey.

I will NOT be shaken. NO NO. I will not be moved. I will NOT be shaken.

E – Exit with a prayer of acknowledgement, acceptance, thankfulness, or conviction

Oh Heavenly Father, just the fact that You never leave me, never change and are always faithful, that Your Word stands forever – and ever, that makes me strong, sure and at peace. As I stand with You I am linked to the imperishable – the eternal. Thank you for giving me the living water of Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Here is the answer to the puzzle:

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

This week I thought we should continue to look more closely at the word of God, which we studied for the past week. How did you do with your memory work?

B——, r—– are those who —- the —- of — and —- it. Luke ??:??

Check the bottom of the post to see if you got it right. I have started a Facebook Group called Word of God Speak Community. I would love you to join me there. We will find different ways to study the Scripture for the week. If you have any other ideas please share them. Here is our Word of God Speak Community Facebook Group. You may add other people you think may be interested.

Today I would like to continue on with another passage about The Word of God using the SIMPLE Method of Bible Study.

S – Say the passage out loud:

The Word of God is living and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates to even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12, NIV).

This is a little more of a challenge for memorizing but I know you can do it. Stick with me at our Word of God Speak Community Facebook Page.

I –  Interpret

What did I find out through looking up cross-references; googling; and from the words themselves?

There seems to be some argument over who is the author of Hebrews. Because it doesn’t start with a salutation the claim of Paul being the author is suspect.

Whoever wrote Hebrews very strongly told the story of the resurrection and our gift from God to live eternally with Him.

I looked up so many “word” passages. I thought I would share them in a drawing. I found 16 that I made into a Wheel. You can download this picture as a PDF.

16-Scriptures-about-The-Word-of-God.PDF

M – Make a list of thoughts and questions.

I do know how important the Word of God is.

When I grew up we didn’t read the Bible as a family except for a few tries over the years. But my grandfather always read from a devotional and the Bible after supper. When we visited them – not very often – I would hear the Word and sometimes be asked to read it out loud. As I think back it might have been The Upper Room that he used. I don’t recall any discussion after reading the passage and devotional (which I think is essential).

When I made my decision that Christ would be my Lord and Saviour, I was hungry to learn more. I wanted to read the Bible but found it very difficult. We had a family Bible in the King James Version. I couldn’t understand it. I became frustrated. A friend suggested I buy a New International Version. But still nothing. The same friend suggested I ask Jesus to help me understand what I read. I gave that a try and hurrah – I understood better. I still ask God to open my understanding as I read His Word.

I’m excited now, not only to read but to hear what God wants me to know TODAY. Since his Word is LIVING and ACTIVE it can change as I change and as my circumstances change.

P – Pray – Remember not to talk too much to God but instead listen to His Words.

L – Life Application: What did God tell me?

The very first words I heard from Him were:

Cut to the quick.

Now that was entirely weird. I didn’t know what it meant. I checked various biblical references for quick and quicken and quickening.

  1. I read that “cut to the quick” could mean hurt, or emotionally hurt.

But when they heard this, they were cut [a]to the quick and intended to kill them  (Acts 5:33, NASB).

2. It also meant to get to the core of the message and stay focused.

3. “Quickening” meant to give life to dead flesh. God speaks through quickening.

It is the Spirit which quickens, the flesh profits nothing: the words which I have spoken unto you are spirit and are life (John 6:63, Darby Translation).

4. The literal Greek meaning of “quicken” means “to make alive, give life or vitality” (Strongs #2227).

So what do I do with these words, “cut to the quick” that God has given me? I remember hearing sermons that I thought, “How does the pastor know that those words are exactly what has been happening in my life? that is the answer I seek?”

I think what I am learning is that the Holy Spirit makes God’s Word come alive. Any passage will help me with instruction or correction. And God will ensure that he leads me to the passage I need to study for that day. And as for myself – I am to stay focused on what He wants me to do. I also want to remember NOT to grieve the Holy Spirit. If God tells me to do something I had better do it – and do it immediately!

E – Exit with a prayer.

Lord, You can cut me to the quick – either focus me or cut off something that is not of You. I know I am to be set apart for You – to be Holy at all times. Thank You for being such a loving, caring, gracious God who knows me. You have revealed so much to me today. You talked more than I have heard in a while. As I delve deeper into Your Word help me to change and refine and become closer to whom You want me to be. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

The song Refiner’s Fire also came to me during prayer time. This reminded me of the podcast I did for this past week – To live in the Holy.

Here is Refiner’s Fire for you to enjoy sung by Brian Doerksen.

Word of God Speak – Linky Party

Blessed rather are those.

Today is the start of a new vision for my blog. God has been speaking into my heart more and more about not only being in the Word myself but encouraging others to do this as well. My Sunday Stillness name did not focus on that even though my posts did.

So today I have changed the name of the LINK to Word of God Speak. Each week I will look at one Scripture – just the way I did through my Titus study. I will use the SIMPLE Method of Study to discern what God wants me to learn today.

I will also be posting this link earlier in the weekend – 6:00 am EDT Or EST each Saturday depending on the time of year. This will give all my linkers 2 days of the weekend to link their posts. I hope this doesn’t lead to too much confusion. But if you read last week’s post you will know that my head has been full of ideas.

For the first Scripture I chose Luke 11:28 which has been my scripture for the new name for my blog – Growing Through God’s Word.

SIMPLE Method of Bible Study

S – Say the passage out loud:

He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it (Luke 11:28, NIV).”

Jesus commented, “Even more blessed are those who hear God’s Word and guard it with their lives (Luke 11:28, The Message)!”

I – Find out all you can about the passage. When? Where? Why?

Other Scriptures from my Study Bible:

Hebrews 4:12  For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Proverbs 8:32 Now then, my children, listen to me;
blessed are those who keep my ways.

From Henry’s Concise Commentary are these words:

Though it is a great privilege to hear the word of God, yet those only are truly blessed, that is, blessed of the Lord, that hear it, keep it in memory, and keep to it as their way and rule.

M- Make a list of thoughts, questions and ideas.

First thing I can think of is that everyone cannot understand the word of God. I hear that we must have our hearts, eyes and ears opened and be blessed. And at that time we can also learn to memorize Scripture.

My hope is that each week I will work on a Scripture for the week – memorizing it, a word at a time.

How can I encourage others to join me in memorizing Scripture?

How can I encourage others to read a Scripture and let God help them see what is important for them for the day?

P- Pray for God’s Guidance

This is a silent time of prayer, listening to God Speak.

L- Life – How can I apply what I have heard from God to my life?

This is the hardest but the best part. Actually taking the time to listen to God. What I heard today was how easy it is to write and speak about God’s Word but very hard to remember it and obey it.

I thought of all the times I had heard about watching my words – and then I do it again with my hubby – I get upset if he doesn’t understand me. Why? Because I want to get my way. I want to be clearly understood – never thinking that he wants the same thing.

So OBEY has been the word I heard clearly today.

What I learned today is not to just read, study, speak and write the Word of God – but obey it. (tweet this)

E- Exit with a prayer of confirmation and acceptance.

Lord God, I love how you teach me through Your Word. I love how this passage might tell me something entirely different another time. But for today, what I heard clearly was to obey Your Word. I heard to take it deep into my soul by memorizing it. I heard to make it part of who I am. Thank You for teaching me this today. In Jesus’ name. Amen

I hope you have enjoyed my first post on Word of God Speak. Once again here is the scripture I intend to memorize this week:

He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it (Luke 11:28, NIV).”

I will leave you with a favourite worship song of the same name by Mercy Me.

Let’s memorize this Scripture together.

Sunday Stillness – What To Do with So Many Ideas

Sunday Stillness – What To Do with So Many Ideas

What-To-do-With-so-Many-IdeasThe photo above is to show the number of ideas I could have in one day.

My problem is never boredom. My problem is always what do I do next.

Does anyone else feel that way?

I have lists for lists. I am trying to learn more about making my blog more professional and set up properly. But that means many hours studying. I know it will be worth it but then again I learn, I do something and mess something else up. For instance, blog categories. I heard that we should only have 10. Well I had far over that number. I decided to delete some categories. But I became hyper focused and deleted a couple I shouldn’t have delete. Yikes – what a time trying to redo them.

But no matter what I do, I have not become stressed. No matter what happens – new ideas, old ones – I know that my primary goal is Christ. Am I where God wants me to be?

The only way I can be sure that I am on the right track with Jesus,
is to spend time with Him.

To that end I want to dedicate my early mornings to Him. At least I am trying to dedicate that time to Him. Lately I have been backsliding in order to do other tasks. I need to remake that promise. Do you make promises? Do you keep them?

I promise to try to devote at least 1/2 hour to study and prayer in the morning.

I know that Jesus altered my mainspring. He can do the same to yours if you give him the time and space.

Reading AW Tozer for my Bible Study this week – The Knowledge of the Holy. Wow! Being grateful to know Jesus, so the awesomeness of God has become real to me. Tozer talks about the fear of the Lord. I see fear, not as being afraid to move or live , but to live and move respectfully remembering Who God is, in every moment of my being.

Tweetables:

I see fear of God is to live and move respectfully

THE STILLNESS OF SUNDAY – Can you be still before the LORD?

Be Still Before the Lord – Can you do that?

I know I have trouble being still. It takes concentration and discipline.

I wrote about this in QUIET.

today, I read about how to “quieten the clamouring voices” in my mind (from Quiet by Janis Cox).

How is your “mental racket”? (tweet this)

Try to take a few minutes today to quieten yourself before the Lord.

IN THE STILLNESS

In the stillness I wait

I wait and I listen

Breathe in the breath of God

Focus on Jesus

He comes

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth (Psalm 46:10, NIV).”

Prayer:

In the stillness, Lord, we know we can find You. Help us to take a few minutes to wait for you in the quiet. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Sunday Stillness – Is Distraction a good thing or bad?

Sunday Stillness – Is Distraction a good thing or bad?

I came away from the writers’ conference in Alberta (read about it here), all fired up to focus. Yes focus on what God is calling me to do. I have answered the three questions:

Why? Because I feel God is calling me to get as many people as I can into the Word, so He can talk to them about their lives. So my new title is Growing Through God’s Word.

Who? Anyone who desires to listen to God – men and women. And for children I will write children’s books that will focus on Growing With God. Tadeo Turtle was the beginning.

What? I want to follow God’s Word and speak about what He is saying to me and inspire others to listen to what He is saying to them. And as well as blogging I will venture out into speaking. You can listen to me at Hope Stream Radio. I am scheduled on Tuesdays and Saturdays. You can also listen to all my former podcasts on my Hope Stream Radio page. I have joined a Me Too Moments for Moms and am featured as a Mentor.

But then after making my list, thinking it through,  I got distracted with getting ready to go away (we are off to Arizona in three days of the time of posting this) and life in general and emails, social media, connections.

Now I realize that distractions are part of life. I had better embrace them. (tweet this)

I am not in a monastery or cloistered in a small cell – I am living, breathing and acting on everything.

This week started off by finally seeking help with my glasses. I had noticed that while driving I couldn’t see the signs without tilting my head downwards. My optician corrected it with a tilt. Great I could see. But it hurt. So I returned the next day. He adjusted it. Next day, I returned again  – it still hurt. Today, I think it is almost fixed. I am waiting until the end of the day to see if I have to return. That was time taken away – but I figure well spent as I can see clearly now.

I did a few phone calls to set up our return to Arizona. Still quite a few to do – the dreaded Bell call – I keep putting it off. (for my American readers – that is our Canadian Internet, phone provider).

But I also went outside and cut back our snowball tree and went for walks.

I read, I rested from jetlag. I connected with many people I met at the conference. I did my blogs.

And I know that all things work together for good – and I continue to do all things. They may feel distracting but they are truly living for God.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose  (Romans 8:28, NIV).

Just to prove the point – God showed me again – interrupted to go with my hubby and deliver something special to someone. Praising Him for all distractions that are part of His plan.

This weekend is our Canadian Thanksgiving. Let’s all give thanks in all circumstances. Praising God for always being with us.

Prayer:

Lord, we all live full lives on this earth – sometimes with focus and other times with distractions. Help us to live our lives fully for you in all we do, distractions and all. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Have a blessed Sunday Stillness.

Sunday Stillness – How to Feel Invigorated

Sunday Stillness – How to Feel Invigorated

There are times we need to have connection with others to feel invigorated. This past week I had the opportunity and pleasure to attend the Inscribe Writers Conference. What a blessing it was! Not only was I invigorated but I felt a strong sense of God’s leading in my life.

Highlights:

Jeff Goins: Author of many books but his latest is The Art of Work.

Jeff is as real as he seems on line. What a genuine gentleman. A faithful follower of Christ.

Some quotes from his book that I thought very important (there are so many more).

Success isn’t the goal; legacy is.

We are called to call others; we are given gifts to be given away.

The right choice isn’t to retire …. it’s to work hard and passionately, but acknowledging the limitations of what one life is capable of.

The executive for Inscribe:

What an amazing group of warm and caring individuals. They never seemed frustrated, harried or stressed. They trusted in God to figure things out. What a way to show us all how to walk with Him.

Workshops:

I learned something important from each workshop I attended. All leaders were gracious, answered questions and filled our heads with tons of information. I learned a new form of poetry called, “Found Poetry”. The picture for today is one that I wrote based on Psalm 50. Thank you, Colleen Taylor McCubbin.

The people:

This was my first time attending the conference. I knew names and some faces from being online. But what a warm welcome I had. I felt like I had come home. Everyone seemed to be from my “tribe”.  I found my niche of people who truly understand how God is leading us. Powerful prayer times. Wonderful worship led by Colleen McCubbin. A warmth and caring that I miss all ready.

Prayer:

Thank You, Lord, for pushing me to attend this conference. The urge was so strong I knew it had to be You. Thank You for all the people who put together this conference – behind the scenes people too. Thank You for always leading us when we listen. I learned that “he who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honours” God (Psalm 50:23, NIV). I am so thankful. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Tweetable:

How to learn, worship and be with your tribe. @inscribecwf Great conference. Thanks again. (click to tweet)

Sunday Stillness – Who are you tied to?

Sunday Stillness – Who are you tied to?

You-are-you-tied-to

Watercolour pencil by Janis Cox 2016

The other day I read:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Mathew 11:28-29, NIV).

I looked at that verse again. Jesus asks us to pick up His yoke; then He asks us to learn from Him.

As you can see from my picture, the yoke is made of two places to be held.

One would be for Jesus and one would be for me. That is closeness, isn’t it? Then we can work together. I thought about that. As He would move, I would move. As He stopped, I stopped. We could talk close together. I could hear His voice.

No wonder I would find peace and rest with Him beside me.

This week let’s take on that yoke. Let’s truly PACE ourselves. (tweet this)

P. – Perfectly
A. – Aligned to
C. – Christ’s
E. – Expectations

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for telling me again and again that You are tied to me. As I let You take the lead, I always feel at rest and peace. You are the LEADER. I am the follower. Help me to P.A.C.E. myself. I don’t need to be in control and to know the outcomes. I only need to share in Your wisdom and love to find joy in living. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Remember to always put on the yoke of Jesus , not just to relieve the weight but to allow His direction. When Jesus is joined with us by the yoke, He is driving. Let Him drive.

Today is Sunday Stillness.

Sunday Stillness Link – Man it’s dark

man-it's-dark

Have you ever woken up in a room in the country where there are no lights. I do that each night to use the washroom. I used to walk without any light by feeling my way. As I age I am thinking that isn’t too bright. Now I use a flashlight. It is small and I cover it with my hand so as to not wake up my sleeping hubby.

But dark is DARK. Unless there is a moon I can’t even see my hand.

In John 12:35 it says:

Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. (tweet this)

That really makes sense to me now. We need light to see where we are going.

Lately I have been reading scriptures about spiritual warfare. We are told to put on the suit of God’s protection. We are told to not fret, worry or be anxious but pray. We are told to trust in God – that the battle has all ready been won. Jesus is the conqueror. And the battle is the Lord’s.

The readings that have been on my mind are:

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

The words that stick out are: We have been given weapons to demolish strongholds, demolish arguments, We are to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:8

We need the armour of God in order to stand firm. We are covered head to foot (with a helmet of salvation, a belt of truth and feet in readiness – and carrying a shield of faith).

then I thought of 1 Samuel 17:47 (NASB):

and that all this assembly may know that the Lord does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands.

Prayer:

Lord, for those who are in the dark, I ask that you send Your Light to shine in to their lives. And I pray when we get into dark places we remember to turn on the light – right away. Help us to stay in the light – Your light. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.
