Watchful Wednesdays

Watchful Wednesdays

IMG_1951

I have been doing the Joy Dare since January. Although I have enjoyed it thoroughly I find it very time consuming. So I am stopping the hunt. However, I will continue to write on Wednesdays and add a few of the blessings from my week.

I am calling my Wednesdays – Watchful Wednesdays. On Wednesdays I will be writing about what God is showing me – through photography, paintings, communication, the Bible, my family and everywhere else.

Today I want to focus on families. Our family is getting together next week at a cottage for our yearly family retreat. This will be our 3rd summer. What an amazing blessing this is to everyone. We catch up; we play; we laugh; we tell stories; we hug; we eat… oh yes we do eat. The grandchildren play together and we watch.

We learn:

Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him (Psalm 127:3, NIV).

A family is a place where principles are hammered and honed on the anvil of everyday living (Chuck Swindoll).

I love to read Oswald Chambers every morning. On July 31 I read:

Ultimately God will let nothing escape, every detail is under His scrutiny.

So I want to watch, be aware, listen and concentrate on each moment of living.

Here are some blessings from the past week.

      • Sizzlin’ Summer Service in the park – joint with the churches

Last week I attended a full week art course at Haliburton School of the Arts. It was called Experimental Watercolour by Kal Honey.

Kal pushed us; he pulled us; he told us to stop thinking and just paint; he told us to forget about the product and just work with the process.

My head is full. I want to paint but my computer calls. On Monday I did take time to play, and explore my paints. Fun.

Here is my list from this week:

July 24 ~ 3 gifts sand

      • I recall a cute statement from my granddaughter while walking around our roads in early summer. “These roads look like the beach, grandma.” Our roads were still covered with winter sand.
      • sandpainting: Something that I must try for Creative Saturdays
      • I love building castles, moats, digging holes and just the feel of wet sand through my fingers and toes

July 25 ~ 3 gifts endings

      • on this day I am at the 1/2 way point of my art class – hard work, but I don’t like endings

Week 30 Janis'-paintings - Haliburton School of the ARts - Kal Honey

      • when is a piece of art work finished – we talked about “endings” in our art class

Week-30-Janis'-painting-Kal-Honey-course

      • Jesus knew when His time was ending on earth. And He knew it was accomplished when He said, “It is finished”.

July 26 ~ 3 gifts fresh

      • today is a new start – a promise of diversity in my art, in my life – less computer time and more living
      • fresh look at myself – I needed this week taking my art course to know that somehow I could take 40 hours from my regular week and still get my posts up, cook dinners, and even go for a boat ride
      • Jesus renews me every morning so I can start each day fresh

July 27 ~ a gift on vacation, at home, in relaxation

      • vacation: I am looking forward to our trip to Poland in the fall
Week-30-Poland Trip 2010 - Janis Cox

Poland Trip 2010 with International Messengers

      • at home: I am putting my art supplies into a meaningful order
      • relaxation: taking a few days to reflect after a very full intensive week

July 28 ~ 3 gifts beginnings

      • a new painting outlook – fun!

This week I am taking an art course at the Haliburton School of the Arts. It is called Experimental Watercolour by Kal Honey. If you are from Ontario and love art, consider checking out the summer brochure – lots of great classes.

So my pictures are few this week – if any – but I keep counting the gifts. I would love you to continue to link your posts.

July 17 ~ 3 gifts learned

  • I learned all about furnaces and air conditioning this past week as my daughter’s A/C decided it was too old to work (and this during a heat wave)
  • I learned how to keep cool; move around slowly; drink lots of fluids, have a shower and go to bed with wet hair
  • I learned there is a new Bible study starting in August – online, studying one passage of Scripture a week (hope I can find it again)

July 18 ~ 3 gifts musical

  • baby toys can come on suddenly when you least expect it
  • I love watching my grandbaby dance to the music
  • I love singing songs – praise and worship songs especially

July 19 ~ 3 gifts baked

  • it is a blessing our bread is already baked – either regular or gluten free
  • Grateful that we now have baked chips, not fried ones
  • I baked in the heat – over 90 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees C.) and it was humid

July 20 ~ a gifts light, dark and shadow

  • light: I love the morning light waking me up
  • dark: it is so quiet in the dark
  • shadow: isn’t it wonderful how the trees provide such lovely shade, especially in the heat, while we played in the sandbox?

July 21 ~ 3 gifts story

  • Sunday’s sermon was on Mary and Martha – a story I know well as I have a children’s book, unfinished, based on this story
  • the stories in the Bible – so powerful
  • twice a month we have a storytelling course on Mondays – we are learning biblical storytelling – Highlands Biblical Storytellers.

July 22 ~ 3 gifts understated

  • we learned in art class today the difference in intensities – and it is good to vary the intensity of the colour – some to be understated or lower intensity
  • me – I have to learn not to be so intense – t0 let go of control – be understated
  • the lesson this morning from Oswald Chambers – It is NOT about me. I have to keep reminding myself

July 23 ~ a gift high, low and far away

  • high: I drank a chai tea this morning and actually had a high level of energy for most of the day
  • low: unfortunately now that it is nighttime – my energy level has hit bottom – low
  • far away: this week I am reminded of the Polish mission team, with which I have travelled 4 previous times, is so far away. Praying for them especially since they have lost half the team (before they arrived). Trusting God to figure this out.

Here are a few shots of the weird and wonderful things we have been doing this week.

experimental-tools---strainer

An artist works with the strainer to see the types of marks that she can make on the paper. No brushes were allowed.

experimental-tools---bubble-maker

Bought for $1.00 at the Dollar Store – this artist uses it to create interesting textures.

experimental-tools

This is my effort. I used the little squiggly thing at the top. Made from flower wire, it has a feathery end. Amazing how many different marks can be made from it.

experimental---handmade-tool---Kal-Honey

One of the students had made this gadget – string, washers. Our instructor, Kal Honey, is shown using it.

After a conference it seems it takes me a few days to sort myself out. I have a head full of ideas, changes and passion. But where to get the time? Then the Lord reminded me:

It is all in His time.

So counting the gifts again this week – seeking to know that He is always with me.

Sunday Stillness – Isaiah 35:2

Sunday Stillness – Isaiah 35:2

Isaiah 35:2

Finally this week I planted my garden. This spring has been cold, rainy and it hasn’t been the right time to get outside and plant.

I had a wonderful time. I love getting my hands into the dirt. I never use gloves. On the other hand, my hubby hates to put his hands into the earth. So he uses the shovel and I play with the dark soil. Heaven.

Joy – beauty – and song.

This week’s Scripture is from The Message:

Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers
and singing and joy!
The deserts will become as green as the mountains of Lebanon,
as lovely as Mount Carmel or the plain of Sharon.
There the Lord will display his glory,
the splendor of our God (Isaiah 35:2)

What joy are you seeing this season?
I watch for the splendour of God as it unfolds in my garden.

There is only one picture this week. It was extremely busy week as I attended a writers’ conference. I hope you enjoy reading them without the pictures. I am too tired to even look for them.

 June 10 ~ a gift at 8 am; 12; and 2 pm

      • 8 am: my favourite time of quiet before we being our day – just resting in the Lord, awaiting His Voice
      • 12: lunch time, my favourite – leftovers from last night’s dinner
      • 8 pm: I have finished most of my week’s posts before I head for an award’s ceremony and a 3-day conference

June 11 ~ 3 gifts painted

      • no one can paint like God can paint; look around you, see the details, the shading, the light
      • checked out my craft for Saturday – a torn Tadeo Turtle (not really painted but crafted)
      • putting my paintings and my cards with my paintings in my car to take to the conference

June 12 ~ 3 gifts full

      • starting my morning looking after my grandson- such a blessing; taking him to daycare
      • a very full day – driving to Mississauga; missing the turn and thanking God for my GPS; picking up a friend; trying to find the hotel; getting lunch; getting a snack before the awards dinner; helping on the door with tickets; watching the Awards Gala
      • full of anticipation; waiting for the announcement; hearing Tadeo’s name – and being called to the front to accept the Best Children’s Book of 2013

Janis Cox accepting award

June 13 ~ 3 gifts smelled

      • early morning rain – you know the smell – fresh, yet full of a heavy scent
      • arriving at the conference – smells of trees, grass – but stuffed nose because of allergies
      • someone wore perfume and my friend is severely allergic to perfume; so we asked people not to put on anymore fragrances

June 14 ~ a gift unexpected; unwanted; unlikely

      • unexpected: I woke up before the 6am alarm even though we went to bed late
      • unwanted: I didn’t want to feel sleepy in my classes so I had a tea for lunch (I don’t usually drink tea or coffee)
      • unlikely: It is highly unlikely that I will retain 10 percent of what I am learning at this conference

June 15 ~ 3 gifts in His Word

      • to be able to read His Word and remember the stories
      • the more I read a passage the better I recall it when needed for prayer
      • the idea that we can be inspired by God in our writing and praying before we write is essential

June 16 ~ 3 gifts moving

        • my little grandson is on the move; he is starting to take hesitant steps back and forth, his little face full of the glee of accomplishment
        • all I have done this past week is move stuff; from my house to the car; into the hotel; out of the hotel; into the conference; back into the car; into my daughter’s house and finally back home. Thanks to my hubby for lugging the stuff back into the house. Now to put it away
        • I am moving into a different direction. Watching and waiting to see where God is leading me this time.

June 8 ~ 3 gifts empty

    • hubby and friend pulled all the creeping bush from the garden and now it is empty waiting for me to plant
    • I found my mailbox empty of the plastic sleeves I had ordered – a mixup in customer service and they sent them by regular mail – (Hard Euchasisteo). I used plastic baggies.
    • my car is empty waiting to be filled with all the stuff for the craft show. I ended up taking the truck as my art easel would not fit in my car

June 9 ~ 3 gifts made you really smile

    • in our church service I smiled to see a friend feeling better
    • I listened to a wonderful inspiring speaker to today at a women’s group
    • finally getting the boat into the water and taking it for a spin
