Sunday Stillness – Seek His Kingdom

Sunday Stillness – Seek His Kingdom

Seek-His-Kingdom

Seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well (Luke12:31, NIV).

I have joined Margaret Feinberg and 10 000 others in reading through the New Testament for Lent. So far I am keeping up.

Of course I can’t just read the words. I have to study them; question them; and write down my thoughts.

While reading Luke I came across this passage. I remembered a similar passage from Matthew in the King James Version.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33, KJV).

What it meant to me is for me to be on the lookout for God in my day. When I received this picture above in the mail I immediately saw the cross. I had a similar experience when I was taking pictures early in the morning last year. Take a look at the picture below. It was an aha moment as I searched for reflections in pictures.

As I make myself more aware of God around me – I see more. Are you looking for the presence of God? Try it. Seek His Kingdom.

May you all have a blessed week.

Sunday Stillness – Mark 11:24

Sunday Stillness – Mark 11:24

Mark-11-24

Picture is from Free Digital Photos.Net

I am reading through the New Testament with Margaret Feinberg as a Lenten exercise. I started earlier because I knew I needed more time than 40 days.

As I read through Mark, I came across:

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours (Mark 11:24, NIV).

We doubt a lot. We wonder if it would be possible for God to answer our prayers. And here Jesus says, “believe you have received it.”

In The Message I read this:

Include everything as you embrace this God-life, and you’ll get God’s everything (Mark 11:24, The Message).

Embracing the God-life – listening to His Voice, acting on His Word, praying persistently.

Every day I try harder and harder to do this. And I have seen miracles, divine appointments and God moving mountains.

I believe I have received it when I pray. Do you?

Sunday Stillness – Psalm 91 – LOVE

Sunday Stillness – Psalm 91 – LOVE

Psalm-91

Continuing with the love theme for February. Psalm 91 is one that I am saying aloud and praying each day for the whole month. Do you LOVE the Lord?

In Junes 2008 I heard the Lord say to start a prayer blog. I said, “Who me? I am not gifted in praying.”

He replied, “I AM”.

So Under the Cover of Prayer was started because I love the Lord. There have been a few hiccups. Once I became fearful that I couldn’t write as well as my contributors and people would compare my feeble attempts to my more polished writers and those who knew more about prayer. So I stopped writing and just posted their words. One night God convicted me. Oh did I hear Him strongly. You can read about that incident at Under the Cover of Prayer in a post called Convicted at 2am.

But through all the ups and downs of learning to post and seeking contributors and guest bloggers, God has been faithful to send me posts to fill my queue. He always rescues me.

Drop over to Under the Cover of Prayer – seek His Face in a close communion through prayer.

God will rescue us if we call upon Him.

I will call upon the LORD, for he will answer me, give ear to me and hear my prayer (Psalm 17:6, NIV).

Sunday Stillness – Time – Titus 1:2

Sunday Stillness – Time – Titus 1:2

time---Titus-1-2

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time,  and which now at his appointed season he has brought to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,

To Titus, my true son in our common faith:

Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior (Titus 1:1-4, NIV).

Time – something that God gives us. And He uses it to His glory. God planned our eternal lives before the beginning of time. That is a promise. And I just love God’s promises.

This week my “time” has been different but as I wrote in Five Minute Fridays – He is always right. I know I should be where I am. It is different and not what I do normally but I know He has the plan and I plan to follow Him.

Are you going with God’s timing or trying to make your way in your timing? It is a big question.

As my little grandson (22 months) is learning to do – Breathe. When things don’t seem to be going his way, he gets frustrated. His mommy has taught him to take a slow breath – and breathe. That calms him very well so he can then listen to why things are not going to go according to his timing.

Are you breathing? Are you taking the time to listen to the God Who created you?

Today is Sunday Stillness – Take time. And remember God has planned everything – in His timing.

Today is #SundayStillness.

Sunday Stillness – Psalm 139: 9-10

Psalm 139 Bill Weaver Photo

It is a good thing that God holds me fast in His Hand. Sometimes I have no idea which way I am going and He seems to be able to direct my path back to the straight and narrow road.

I do rise on the wings of the dawn – and glide here and there. But then He focuses me and says: Janis get this done, now. And boy does He know. I have worked ahead and He knew I needed to because I am heading back to Canada on Sunday to help my daughter. Thank You, Lord for Your foresight.

So here I am getting this done, because God helps me. He guides me to people with gorgeous pictures – Bill Weaver being one special one. I knew I wanted a soaring bird and Bill provided a beauty – an osprey. Exactly what I needed.

Do you know that God holds you fast in His Hand? (click to tweet)

I hope so. If not, please ask Him to show you Who He is. It is that simple.

Sunday Stillness – Quote by Max Lucado

Sunday Stillness – Quote by Max Lucado

Max Lucado Quote - jungle

Watercolour by Janis Cox 2013

Sometimes my days seem like a fog – like last week. Other times I feel like I am in a jungle with branches, and vines, and everything all swirling around me.

In our Bible study we are using a book called The Gospel of Matthew by Max Lucado.

In lesson five called “Following Christ”, Max asks these questions and gives his answers.

Does God remove the jungle? No, the vegetation is still thick.

Does he purge the predators? No, the danger still lurks.

Jesus doesn’t give hope by changing the jungle; he restores our hope by giving us Himself.

And I am so grateful that God can bring peace in the midst of the jungle. He can make me calm, and even joyful when things seem to be confusing.

I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:20, NIV).

Sunday Stillness – Isaiah 11:1

Sunday Stillness – Isaiah 11:1

Isaiah-11-1

Journalling the other day and came across this in Isaiah – sketched it so I would remember it.

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,
the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,
or decide by what he hears with his ears;
but with righteousness he will judge the needy,
with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;
with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked (Isaiah 11:1-4, NIV).

The visual for this is very strong.

God had a plan in the making. A plan for us. A plan for our salvation.

And how will He judge: “with righteousness he will judge”. Not by what He saw, or heard.

Do we do that? Do we go to God with our fears, and our judgments? Or do we take what we hear from the world?

When people talk about their governments I hear disparaging words – and these are Christians, too. I keep suggesting to them, “Pray for those in authority”. Because that is what we are called to do. PRAY. Trust in God. It is He that puts governments in their place.

God will judge – NOT US.

So get into your Bible today. Read and read some more. Learn what God is saying and don’t listen to the words of others.

Tweetables:

Sunday Stillness – Deuteronomy 33:25

Sunday Stillness – Deuteronomy 33:25

Deuteronomy-33-25

Watercolour Painting by Janis Cox, 2013 based on an ad I found at http://www.heels.com/womens-shoes/trevina-sandal-bronze.html

Last Sunday the Sunday School in Arizona asked me to do the Storyteller’s part for the children’s service. I had done this a couple of times last spring. I received the story and realized it was a Proverb – not a real story.

Of course, Satan tried to have a field day with me. He told me, “You can’t do this.” I felt confused. Then I said to myself, “No way, Satan, you are NOT getting to me. I have Jesus to give me strength, words and confidence.”

In my weakness – I kept saying – He is strong. And He was. Even though I didn’t feel adequate at all, I kept trusting Jesus to pull me through. And He did in a marvellous way. I had a great time. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

So this pair of sandals is my vision for this strength. There are two very different versions for this passage. In the New Kings James Version it is sandals.

Your sandals shall be iron and bronze;
As your days, so shall your strength be (Deuteronomy 33:25, NKJV).

But check out what the NIV says:

The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze,
and your strength will equal your days.

And The Message:

Safe behind iron-clad doors and gates,
your strength like iron as long as you live.

I decided it didn’t matter what the vision – the strength is the same. I like the idea that:

God puts iron and bronze shoes on my feet
to give me strength against the Enemy. (Tweetable)

The whole point is – God gave me strength. I allowed Him to be the strength in my weakness. And I enjoyed the journey.

Today is Sunday Stillness – be still before Him.

Stop and feel His touch.

Blessings,

Janis

Sunday Stillness – The Tender Shoot

Sunday Stillness – The Tender Shoot

The-Tender-Shoot

I have been meditating on the cross. Today the word “tender” came to me. And then I found “tender shoot”. Here is the full scripture in NIV and the Message:

He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him (Isaiah 53:2, NIV).

The servant grew up before God—a scrawny seedling,
a scrubby plant in a parched field.
There was nothing attractive about him,
nothing to cause us to take a second look (Isaiah 53:2, The Message).

Then I watched the Billy Graham 95th birthday video thanks to my friend Joanne at Days and Thoughts. And it said it all – The Cross; how offensive it is; how weak; how lowly; – but how powerful it became when our Lord rose and conquered death for us.

So those days when you feel weak (like I did yesterday), call on Jesus, He is strong. For those days when you feel strong, keep close to Him so you know that you are following His Way and not yours.

For those looking for deeper meaning in this Scripture check out John Gill’s commentary.

Here is the video. I encourage you to watch it.

Today is Sunday Stillness – be still before Him.

Stop and feel His touch.

Blessings,

Janis

Watchful Wednesdays – Who Is Your Gang?

Watchful Wednesdays – Who is Your Gang?

Community

The other day I came across a speech by Mr. Rogers on Emily Freeman’s blog. My kids were regular viewers of Mr. Rogers and his Neighbourhood.

In 1997 Fred Rogers received a Life Time Achievement Award. Here is the acceptance speech.

In one part of his speech he asks the audience for 10 seconds of silence in which to remember those who made a difference in their lives.

Today I am calling those people your “gang”.

Who are those people who have made a difference in who you are? Take 10- 20- 30 or more seconds to quietly thank God for these people.

God wants us in community. (tweet this)

God wants us in a community with Himself. That is why He sent His Son, Jesus, to bring us back into community with Him.

God wants us in community.

God wants us in a community with others. Jesus wants us to build His Church so we can be part of this community.

But we need to work on it. It can be messy.

I am reading a book called Community is Messy by Heather Zempel. She states:

Community is the very essence of his [Jesus’] character. The complex doctrine of the Trinity demonstrates to us that God exists in community with himself. And ultimately that’s what he was dying for. To restore community. Between humankind and God. And within the mess of humankind itself (page 18, Community is Messy).

Prayer:

Thank You, Lord for the gang you have given me. Thank You for building a strong bond of faithful fellowship between us. Thank You for allowing me to enter into fellowship with You. Thank You for Jesus in whose Name I pray. AMEN.

Join us on Sunday for Sunday Stillness – where we are building a new strong faithful online community – a Gang for Jesus.
